Wow people. These are 2 AWESOME musicians coming together for a very rare performance and all I see are comparisons of the 2. Peter Green is Legendary as id Santana but lineage=respect and DONT FORGET IT
Who knows, but I think Green at this stage was no longer too concerned with Rock 'N Roll worshippers...he had his day and was awsome indeed, it turned out great that Santanna could take this song into rock n' roll immortality, Peter just didn't have it at that time. Nothing wrong with letting somebody else carry a light that may be too bright (or heavy) for you at the time!
Sorry but does Peter Green even know the chords? He does nothing an average musical guitar player couldn't do. Carlos burns and explodes. Exciting. And Shrieve matches him on the kit. Awesome.
Peter Green - thanks for the song I fell in love to ... I prefer it YOUR WAY. Carlos "owns" it now, but it will always be YOURS. You were magic then and I'm glad to see you onstage now. No comparison, you're the MAGIC in this song and so many others. Love you, Peter!
Excellent, Mr Green is still he Man. Santana looks like he`s really enjoying himself, he`s probably excited to have Peter Green onstage with him, you can see and hear it in his playing.
Santana asserts that he took BMW to another level in his (thankfully) brief appearance in the film Man of the World about Peter Green. The addition of latin based percussion was indeed valuable, but his own playing could never equal Green's for the purity of tone and the unequaled emotion of his playing. At his peak he was the best of England's blues guitarists, bar none. Now well past his own peak, the "Santana treatment" has a dull sameness to it, regardless of the song. & lose the gum, dude.
I agree with the poster that Green is no longer skilful yet his legacy as a blues innovator is respected. The comments re Santana are reactionary, expected of course.
Santana uses lots of stock tricks - Peter just plays how he feels it and its never the same - always totally different. But hats off to Santana for raising Peter's profile especially about BMW.
Ah Peter's solo's can still steal you away off to some other place, simple yes.. but he always had the ability to turn a simple bend or single picked note into somthing beautiful
Sorry, someone has to say it - Peter is a shell of the player he used to be for technique. The soul and expression still there though. He used to have the chops on top of that.
@cubsfands29 I think for the same reason he didn't play all of the hotl licks, he was an honored guest on another man's stage. What a great tribute to a pioneer in music.
It's alright to play many notes if they r expressive. Carlos was just playing notes as does Clapton and others in blues. Green does play some nice solos and so does Santana. Mike Bloomfield played a lot of notes, but they weren't those most commonly used ones. Trust me Mike is the best if there is such a thing. Technicality and feel make you. It's what you play AND how you play it.
Bloomfield was and probably would still b a more accomplished guitarist of feel AND technicality. He had arthritis, but I'm sure he would have still played amazing especially compared to this. Mike was one of Carlos' biggest influences and Carlos still doesn't really sound much like Bloomfield.
Peter Green always had and still have a tone to die for, excellent timing and first class phrasing. Carlos HAD to overplay a bit in front of the GREEN GOD.
Peter greene plays the way I like to play: Complementing the song with nice fills, not getting too fancy, not overdoing it, and staying as true as possible. Santana can be seen as the way a lot of people want to play: over the top, tones of notes.
All that said, I still like Santana's version and Greene's version equally. Two different tastes for two different moods.
As much as I like Santana, Peter Green is God, and he shows it here. He plays beautiful, dignified solos, with incredibly soulful tones. Santana overplays here.
@RobPic914 Well that same night Fleetwood Mac was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. However Peter Green played only with Santana. So I guess Peter likes the way Carlos over plays his song.
@josebcruz Well actually, he said he played with Santana because he asked him first and Fleetwood Mac had their set already planned. And yes it's true, Green has said he likes Santana's version, as do I but I just feel that in this live version, Santana overplays.
@RobPic914 Yeah, I agree. As much as I adore Santana, he let his ego get the best of him in this performance, or something, his timing isn't as great as usual and his tone is pretty rough.
Thats right, Myron Dove played the bass. However, Dave Brown was there and went up on stage to accept his recognition as a member of the Hall of Fame. He was too ill to play the song, and shortly after passed away.
it really SUCKS that Peter's guitar was not loud enough and they didn't really give him a chance to play much. And they had him standing by himself on the side of the stage. They should have put him in front with Carlos.
Peter Green is just so awesome, the more I hear the more I want Not a wasted note, tone, phrase. Listening to guitarists like Vai, et al is like watching an animal perform tricks - they think it's clever but they don't really understand why they are doing it. Peter Green isn't just playing the music, he is the music, it's something spiritual.

Yes, Santana overplays. But watch in amazement as Santana tries to give Green the last solo (6:21), and Green won't take it.

Totally diferent styles, Peter Green preserve the taste of classic rock and blues. Santana want to explode on a halo of Afro-Latinamerican sounds.
