This is actually the saddest scene in the movie for here is the downfall of Camelot. The Bravest and best acknowledges that in his heart he has begun to betray his King, his friend and the land.
You know the one thing I actually don't like in this movie is the fact that Guinevere seems to only love Lancelot. Yeah she says she does love Arthur as a king and somtimes as a husband in this, but I always kind of liked the idea that she had a real love for him, and a different kind for Lancelot. But then again that does set this one apart from other versions as well. In any case it's one of the only love triangles I can tolerate. Ones like Bram Stoker's Dracula and Pearl Harbor are AWFUL.
@TheMiddleagedTomboy Firstly, that's quite the generalization. I personally have never cheated and effectively ended 2 friendships by telling their female partner they cheat - just to tidy that stereotyping off.
Here in Excalibur however she baited it constantly. She was hardly the devoted wife and was the catalyst for the death of the entire round table - awesome chick!
@TheMiddleagedTomboy u are obviously a woman that has never considered the lot of gentlemen who have fell for whores...that is all i will say, because u r mostly right of coarse. Good Day to You.
Ok can I ask what the name of this movie is? I see so many called Excalibur and these same actors are not in them. Can someone tell me what this movie is called?
At the end Arthur tells a dying Lancelot he is the greates knight, but that is Perceval...he was the only one who would champion the Queen when Lancelot was missing...he was the one who found the grail after it was hopeless...Lancelot was a great knight but he was weak because he let his passions control him.
Arthur also was weak because instead of leaving excalibur between those two he should killed the bust.... and than he would never lost the kingdom either he would never engender his son with his sister Morgana. :-)
What people need to realize is that Lancelot and Guenevere were linked together in destiny. Merlin knew all about the fall of Camelot. Although it was adulterous and treason, the theme of the Arthurian legends are that nothing is perfect and nothing good and innocent lasts forever. It's a tragic tale. I personally love Lance and Gwen! King Arthur and Gwen were never in love. They were married as a political union and Gwen's father gave Arthur the Round Table.
The French have give Arthurian legend to romance and History... Are you joking ? Inform yourself about Chrétien de Troyes, if you don't know him, I will provide you some references...
I have always admired this scene. I think it is because in those times words or feelings were not taken lightly. Swearing an oath or taking a vow meant so much to those people. When he says those words, "as long as you live, I shall love no other", you know he means it with all of his heart and mind.
@KiCreativeStudios Maybe this was a joke but if you're asking for real? Then I tell you this. . a woman loves a man that speaks with his heart. No self-debasement of any kind just honesty and love that runs over.

@Colt2571 Lancelot was a lousy knight and a dishonourable man. He is neither a hero nor is he worthy of knighthood

dont know about lousy, he had skills, but he was despicable for his actions and prob not worthy of knighthood.

This movie as a lot to do with more with Germanic Folklore and Tales and of course Wagnerian "style" than actual tale of Britonic King Arthur

It's great but I can't find it anywhere. :(

Nicely encapsulated! In the end though (please correct me if I am wrong) the dream remains? Does the idea of Camelot serve in Camelot's stead?
triestestudent 2 years ago
@MastersoftheOpera Lancelot wasnt even in the original Legend. The French ruined the Arthurian legend by adding Lancelot. I wish they didnt
