  • anyone know what audio book this is from? searched loads cant find it, i think its richard burton, but whats the title, sounds really cool. love the song is original and classic

  • Still love this song after all these years, I took it from my brother and played it over and over in 95' when I first heard it, it sounds better the louder you turn it up!

Dont mind the original, but the remix is the business!

  • where the heck do I find this as an mp3??!

  • @chrishbbbq I have added the EP to BandCamp for you, it includes all the 12 inch mixes. Cheers.

  • @TomEllard with the 1993 remix on it? i must be blind because i can't find it haha

  • @chrishbbbq The exact URL is in the description of the video. Note that the recording was from 93 and the record was released in 94. It's the same thing.

  • @TomEllard you my friend are awesome.

  • A head... a woman's head...

  • Amazing shit still today. Thank christ for JJJ and Rage or we would never have gotten this work of art.

  • Anyone know where I can find this mix?

  • When I first met James McParlane he had a PDP11 in the kitchen and (because he was short of wire when a fault occurred) he had soldered a fork in place to keep the machine running.

  • Bless Rob..rest his soul, such a loss, easily one of the most talented programmers, I have ever met..such a ear...

  • Sounds like a fuckin' Alan Parson's Project song ( not that there is anything wrong with that ) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ohdear1964 Best comment ever.

  • Just voted for 'Since the Accident' in Triple J's Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time!

  • EPIC! reminds me of when i was young.

  • I remember this song from my youth. FUCK YEAHHH THIS IS AWESOME!!!

  • Tom, Hi, Great stuff! Sorry if I sound like a fan - but Severed Heads were so so far ahead of the curve. I imagine you were in it for its own sake, but I can't help feeling a lot more filthy money, success and recognition should have come your way! Would you mind saying what music moves you today? All best.

  • FUCKING AWESOME!!!!

  • What is the poem in this song? (or did they make it up?)

  • @napalm5 its from an old radio show on the BBC called Scales of Justice. The VO is one of the readings from the announcer.

  • @1tch1n thanks for that! I found it on an audio book site as The Newcastle Train Murder & Death on the Crumbles.

  • Saw this song played at the now gone Rialto Theatre in Brisbane. The videos played with it made it the most surreal experience.

  • Still a brilliant listen. The remix here always had a lot of life, and sounds as good today.

  • I listened to this over and over when I was 11 as it was inadvertantly on a compilation cassette I was given as a present

  • Many thanks for this! Great memories. I have the CD rattling round my home somewhere. Must get it into my car. Best regards, P. :)

  • A wonderful find; many thanks for taking me back! I still have the CD single rattling round my house somewhere. Must find it and put it in my car. Best regards, P. :)

  • This song still freaks me out...right back when I first heard it fifteen years ago one late night on Rage ; home alone :O

  • awesome! I haven't heard this for ages and just had one of those "dead eyes opened" moments .... and then I couldn't find my triple J hottest 100 cd! Thanks for putting this up!

  • triple j's hottest 100 vol 2 (1994)

  • Tom , Thanks a million for your amazing songs.

My collection is as good as complete. Although, after the release of Gigapus, I lost track.

Music should be played as it is intended by the artist. Not all Belgian Dj's got their fame by playing music too slow ... I didn't ;-)

  • Your lectures crack me up Tom.

  • Thank god for JJJ i tripped when i heard this brilliant!!

  • i love this golden oldie i was only 13 when this was played on the radio

  • awesome... gotta love it

  • Great band wish I had seen them live :(

  • Ah... here it is. Thought it was Boxcar.

Musta been Heart of the Party I was thinking of.

  • I was raised on this shit

  • love this song i was only 9 years old when this song was released . classic song

  • ILOVE THIS SONG!!

  • I remember this so good, came off school, started to work in a club "Samambaia" in 1987. Whenever this was played, the roof went off & the owner of the club came yellin', the crowd needs Disco!! Heheheheheheh so he could sell more bose.....

  • if you play this slowly its more beautiful, that's wath a famous Belgium dj(Dikke Ronny) did,in a very special disco(wich is now a jeans chop,a shame

  • That's what makes Djs famous. Playing records too slow.

  • Wow! What memories! RIP Filthy Lucre!

  • Takes me back. Wow! Miss you Racic! Thanks Tom for posting all these. A big fan. Robert Luketic

  • Yes, thank you! Jacinda

  • is there any way of getting the accapella of this???

  • Thanks for the post - takes me back to my teens

  • viva spook factory

  • I miss Robert so much!!! A remix of this version is still on HIGH rotation on my dancefloor.

I still remember the first time I heard this version at the Moore Park Bowling Club - Alkins was playing it and I walked past Robert and said "congrats" because I knew it was him. He smiled with that innocent proud snarl he was famous for - he was the Master!

  • This tune is great! Are you still making music?

And dont forget to use the easy ease in and easy ease out :)

    - Jon

  • the spoken words from this song have echoed through my head for years. Now I spontaneously say the phrase "the dead eyes opened", much to the discomfort of those around.

  • @fatmeteor lol ditto thank god for youtube to find this amazing music again!

  • @fatmeteor Glad I'm not the only one

  • Thanks for sharing. Great remix and video!

  • Brings back some awesome memories thanks tom

  • And still sounds fresh..

  • Video too sexy for the west australian hit parade in '93

  • Wow this really brings back memories =) Love this album "City slab horror", wasnt it?

Tom btw have u checked out The Knife?

A band that is somewhat in the same tune...

Thanks for some really great tracks!

  • This version was about ten years after City Slab Horror. A remix.

    Shonen Knife?

  • Yeah, figgured it was a remix, felt a bit up beat.

No, simply "The Knife", great band!

  • I think the band he means are the guys from Sweden. Just search for "The Knife" on wikipedia.

  • @TomEllard No, its a swedish band kalled "The Knife" really interresting.

Btw, sorry for the lateb reply =)

  • You know how hard it is to find this song nowadays? Where can I get a copy of this version?

  • On K-Tel. It was on a compilation called Sounds of the Shadows or something like that :-)

  • @TomEllard I am so relieved to know that this wasn't done by you. The original is SO much better.. *whew*

  • @mistahell It was on the Tripple J hottest 100 volume 1

  • @350dryfty, volume 2 actualy

  • @mistahell @TomEllard amazon.com/Industrial-Music-Shadows-Vol-3/dp/B00004SSHK

This compilation kickstarted my love of industrial, got me into KMFDM, Apoptygma, Young Gods and others, and led to me tracking down a couple of Severed Heads albums too :-)

  • @phantomjordan Fuck yeah. K-Tel Records. We cruised with the best.

  • Great tune! 1993? That's a while back but it remains a good one.

  • "Clifford Darling..." was my first exposure to Toms genius. In the 80's, I was working at KMSA radio in Grand Junction, CO and I started corresponding with Tom and got on his mailing list for a bit receiving his "SevCom" newsletter. I was one of the few College DJ's to push music from Nettwerk, 4AD and WaxTrax labels which did lead to exposure on CMJ. I miss those days but if it weren't for Tape Loops, sampling, analog synths and imagination who knows? Thank you Tom for being a pioneer!

  • it's reasonably amazing that Tom Ellard comments on his own stuff, I got Gigapus secondhand for $5 and had to search for more severed heads

  • What sexual content?

  • You can see enough breast for it to have been banned from daytime TV

  • what were they smoking??? do they cover up nipples and testes in sex ed class there too?

  • lol i havent seen this since i was 13

    great track tho.

  • Top tune and a great remix...never thought i,d find this here. Thanx.

  • one word for this clip

    trippY :)

lol i want this on my myspace!

  • Cool..!

  • I reckon you should be heard all over the world. I liked "dead eyes" first time I heard it

  • Did you become popular overseas?

  • where can i get 'dead eyes opened' severed heads mixes? ie the radio edit spooked, reopened, the love experiment, original i had it on tape but lost it.

  • Go to Amazon, search for severed heads. There several compilations. Look on iTunes.

The 'spooked' thing is some hideous Spanish mish mash.

  • it was either spooked or the love experiment that was the best mixes of this I ever heard alot of syntheziser deep razor like 'Saw' cuts beats etc.

  • Great clip. who is the man speaking on the song?

  • Edgar Lustgarten

  • Been looking for you, Sir, for awhile now...

Saw you live at The Bowery with Skinny Puppy in OKC in 86. Been a fan ever since - still remember that awesome video synthesizer! Any video for "The Ant can see legs" or "Big Car?"

  • Big Car = Retread

Ant Can See Legs was shown in Antwerp but is being remade now in High Definition.

All can be seen at the main sevcom site.

  • Is there a video for 'Legion'?

  • I know one person made one with Legion taxis in it. He might post it.

  • thank you so much for this post. i've been searching and searching for this and ended up downloading 3 wrong versions from i-tunes. any idea where i can get this?

  • You can get it as part of the Bulkhead download at our main site or wait til September, when the CDs are being released in the UK by LTM.

  • I hope you really are Mr. Tom Ellard, Mr. "TomEllard", because it has now, at this moment, fallen to me personally, to tell you...what a great musical group the Severed Heads were and are.

I wish I could be more eloquent about it.

  • Yes this is the band person. I refuse to visit crap places like MySpace but YouTube at least does something useful. Rather than be eloquent just visit the main site every now and then. Cheers.

  • this song reached number 11 on the ARIA charts back in 1993. back than rage were playing a top 50 and they did play it in the countdown. thanks for the post many memories there.

  • Rage would not play the 1993 clip because it contained nudity and had strobing images. Both were not allowed.

  • me acuedo de Spook,guay

  • I just love this piece. Many thanks for this post + the 1983 version.

  • This is a great song and interesting video, though I seem to remember a different clip circa 1993, more psychedelic, without dissolving kaleidoscopic effects.

  • brilliant

  • We await Edgar Lustgarten's displeasure.

  • He's dead actually.

We got permission from his widow. Nice lady.

  • I feel guilty all of the sudden, but I don't know exactly why.

  • Where does the lyrics come from. It sounds like some out of a H.P.Lovecraft novel.

  • We have set up a FAQ for this. YouTube has a tantrum if I try to supply the URL so I will have to spell it out with all the dots removed.

    www severed-heads co uk/faq html#deo

  • tom, could you please also upload the original of this video? it was on youtube a few months ago, and i would watch it almost every day! the edge of the wedge video is an inspiration!!!

  • Of course, I am just trying to find the best master.

  • That was awesome, shame it didn't get broadcast. I recognised Zaph's name as 'the Cthugha guy'. The woman's eyes dissolving effect was great and I saw the Cthugha connection straight away. From the description, I was expecting this to look more like something from the demo scene (not thath that would be a bad thing). I also enjoyed the transition from B&W to colour. Sexual content? Must have blinked.

  • I did do some stuff using demoscene tools, but I was not good enough at it to make it interesting. These guys are geniuses. But I loved VRML. Still do.
