I'm a 1L and I have exams in three weeks. I needed to watch this scene to know that there is more to life than grades. I can't wait to sit on a beach like he did and just let go.
I completed my 1L year this past May and that's NOT how myself nor my fellow classmates acted when our grades were posted. Everyone sent texts to eachother informing one another grades were posted. We were anxious to see what we made. Then again I attend a school that follows a strict C-curve, so we aren't afforded the luxury of going to a beach throwing our grades in to the ocean. We need to know if we made it back.
When she said, "A piece of paper and I'm free", I think it made Hart realize that he didn't need a piece of paper to feel, that he was free in that moment, in front of the beach and with a beautiful woman by his side, so his feelings in that moment changed, and he realized that there was more to life than a passing grade or his knowledge of that...He realized in that moment that it didn't matter what his grade was, but that he was happy and that that's all that mattered, to just let go and live.
yeah i also don't get how they manage to portray december on a massachusetts beach without too much consideration. damn i wish law school was still Just Dollaz
@rkjeldgaard I took it to mean that he knew that he worked his tail off, and was happy with whatever the grades were. He didn't want to let the pressure of getting the greatest GPA control him so much.
I agree bthornrPL...Hart realized he had accomplished something greater than attaining a passing grade on a 2 or 3 hour exam. He had acquired the discipline, fearlessness, knowledge and mindset of a budding legal scholar; something no letter grade could ever reflect.
@rkjeldgaard Hart was the brightest student in the school. The symbolism behind it is that he's so smart, that he doesn't need to worry about his grades.
@rkjeldgaard You've never been an outcast by the academy so you could say he did not care. If you know what was really going on in the academy these days and professor's unfair treatment of his phd, perhaps you would sympathize and say grade is NEVER the only thing in Hart's life and that which makes an individual's life valuable. Nor is a phd DEGREE. A real scholar and intelligent person sees the value of herself as a scholar in life even if the professor gives her an F.
Obviously you know nothing about law school. There are no semesters first year, All course run from September to May. Assuming finals were is May and then a few weeks for grades to be issued it could easily be somtime in June or later...hence bathing suit weather and an oversight on our part.
@TheBurf1 I'm not sure what fourth tier law school you're referring to, but I spoke with my friends at Harvard Law, and yes, 1L year is divided into "terms" which do not "run from September to May". Furthermore, the video description is "Hart finishes his first semester as a 1L". Again, semester, not year.
@TheBurf1 Funny, I checked the academic calendar on the HLS website and that completely disproved your 'year-long class' nonsense. Enjoy your ignorance.
Lindsay Wagner - so beautiful.

I always wondered what the symbolism of that scene was...Did he just not care what his grade was (At that time) Or was he letting go of Law School?

@GMAN95120 So what did he do after this? Go work at McDonalds?
TheAdultChild101 1 year ago
@TheAdultChild101 ,
Possibly.....Hart didn't come from a wealthy family. In order to make ends meet, he may have had to take a menial job. No shame in that....

@GMAN95120 So so true.

This is obviously a West Coast Beach as there is not spot on the cape that looks like this.

At the end of first semester as a 1L Cambridge would be...far too cold to wear a speedo. Interesting oversight on the part of the producers.
