  • Great, but they're very often a hair flat. For the midgets age, i must commend their performance however the older ones have no excuse.

  • My British grandmother loves it

  • This is completely exquisite. The tones within this choir bring tears.

  • it's so touching!

  • such a sweet, otherworldly sound.

  • utterly beautiful, brought tears to my eyes..

  • This Virginian thinks these boys did just fine. It doesn't matter whether you call it a spiritual or a folk song. It doesn't matter what place you call home , or what your native tongue. When sung from the heart and done well this music transcends all of those things. That is the only test. Job well done.

  • @JTB1956 I believe that this song sounds much better with fully matured male voices because you can augment the piece with alternative chords and walking tones.

  • This Is Better With A Mixed Choir, Like Mine, But Still Very Good

  • VMI does it better ^^

  • @MsJanet1231 DEUTCHLAND

  • My chorus group did this song for graduation and for our spring concert last year. It is one of the most amazing choral pieces i have ever done or heard.

  • I love this soooo much. :) I keep listening to it over and over again, haha.

  • I had to stop, play it again, and watch to to see if it was really them. When I was over, I realized I had forgotten to breath. Absolutely stunning.

  • some of them are like 10! this is wonderful :)

  • @4Topwood: Actually The New Christy Minstrels sang a version of this song that is spiritual. And a very good one I might add.

@ raderator; perhaps you suppose wrong and they ARE singing in English. Can you sing in German? And it is not just about the westward movement of "whites!" It is about the westward movement of Americans.

BTW: The Movie Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart is a classic! IMHO

  • I supposed these idiot Germans think this is some kind of slave song. No, it's a song of the westward movement of whites.

  • Nicely done,,RWB

  • Outstanding. Perhaps because of being German singing an American folk song, they put very much emphasis in lyrical clarity. Every word was crystally clear, bordering on clinical, as opposed to musical, or melodic.

The best I've heard so far -- many renditions hear I did -- was the one done by the Kingsmen of Columbia University in the Good Shepherd. Kingsmen's was by far the best: the arrangement, the harmony, the tenor, ...

  • hmzwer mag mit mir zu chatn oder camn sagt einfach bescheid ja ^^

  • This is absoulety beautiful awsum jub you guys i could listen to that song all day good job

  • Absolutely beautiful

  • Omg...around 1:30 it gets freaking AMAZING

    Jeez...how old are the tenors?

  • wow. Absoulety gorgeous. Im playing this in my school for eighth grade and damn were not even close like them.

  • Incredible. I love this song, and this brought tears to my eyes.

  • @wyldemannx - ditto !

  • this is just great!!!

  • wooooooah. the acoustics are amazing

  • oh shanandoah i long to hear youuu AWAAAYY YOU ROLLINGG RIVVVAAAH

  • This is beautiful! Does anyone know who wrote this arrangement?

  • James Erb? I have sheet music for this but it's written for SSAATTBB...but it sounds exactly alike.

  • @yoyogirl92

That would be because the boys are literally singing those parts. My chambers is performing this acapella, and it's a wonderful song to perform once it all comes together!

  • gr ave always hated thi song the notesz r mad high yo !

  • Depending on where you are from, a folk song is a Spritual. The young men did a beautiful job especially considering the video quality and angle from which we see and hear.

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • lcyveins, be honest, when's the last time you left your room? Creep.

  • disagree...they're singing in a language NOT THEIR OWN, in a very reverby space. Therefore diction and cut offs hard. The later round work gave the sense of a river moving. Lovely!

  • does anyone know if this is in duple or triple meter?

  • I'm singing this for choir [:

  • Beautiful song!

  • Shenandoah is a folk song, not a spiritual.

  • @4Topwood I see your point but I like the versions done by choirs the most. It should be filed under folk song but I think the ideal performance is one with a huge choir.

  • @4Topwood no really, it's a spiritual...

  • @malle0the0fish

I'm not going to argue with you since it's obvious you know little, if anything, about music.

  • @4Topwood

    Works both ways

  • this is decent but ive heard better

  • ILL BE THERE WITH MY STEREO when you k

    jajajaaaaaa

  • there seems to be a balance issue between lower and higer parts.

But I sang this version with my choir. Cept we had girls.

  • this was really moving

  • Great video, cept I don't think Shenandoah should be classified as spiritual.

  • so beautiful!!!!

  • Ha I had to sing this for choir.!

    Very well done.!

  • great song 1:29 is the best part

  • YES! i loved singing the tenor part at that spot. (not in this choir)

  • 2:10 and beyond is my favorite part. My school choir did this, but not nearly as well. Amazing!

  • I love that reverb

  • This is awsome. Great job. I couldn't have imagined it better. :)

  • This song is of loss and duty. It applies to every human. So beautiful.

  • Great song. It echoes transcendence.

  • LOL, it's weird to hear Germans singing about the Missouri River.

  • the shenandoah is in virginia

  • This is anamazing version of this song. I cant remember how many times I listened to it.

  • this is amazingly beautiful, we sang this in my chourus

  • we are singing this i want the solo

  • We are singing this for my school concert right now, but i am a barry/tenor so i wont sound like this!

  • Hauntingly beautiful.

  • Congratulations to this choir which is so talented in signing this haunting spiritual. This music reminds me of when I saw the movie Shenandoah when I was just a young girl....beautiful music and a wonderful movie.

  • I sung this some years back [Gods I'm getting old!] with the wake county all county chorus. It wasnt even the finally but we got standing ovations for it

  • nice..

  • i am a very high first soprano! I can sound like the high ones in this! We are singing this at my school right now!

  • Wonderful. I wish I could sing remotely as well as they can.

  • we also sing this song with our choir...i love it so much

  • wow incredably beautiful with all thier voices

  • Absolutely fantastic =*)

  • This is absolutely beautiful.

  • I am in the Shenandoah Valley and I have to tell you that it is every bit as beautiful as this song portrays it. And this is so beautifully done. Well done and such a special treat.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Waldo99 said that this song is in no way religious but I, respectfully, disagree. It doesn't matter if the rolling river is the river Jordan or the river Missouri because we're concerned with heart-rending loss and separation that cannot be avoided. I think that I may ask them to play this at my funeral (many, many, many years from now).

  • I bet this sounded better live

  • Sehr gut!

  • Absolutely wonderful. This is one of my favorite Spirituals.

  • Not to be too picky, but I'd call this song a folk song more so than a spiritual. It does not touch upon god or religion directly or indirectly.

  • Comment removed

  • the great German coral tradition lives on

  • Fabulous. I rarely comment, but this is great.

  • Phenomenal :P

  • This is one of the best recordings on YouTube I've heard. The resonance they get from the church adds a really beautiful legato effect that this song really requires. The dynamics are fantastic, the tenors don't go over the top as the pitch goes up (for instance 3:21), and even the younger soprano and alto boys are surprisingly accurate with the pitch!! Maybe the church does forgive a multitude of (choral) sins. Thank you for posting this - really really well done!

  • couldnt agree with you more, the resonance definently ads to the legato effect to the sound that has that inotation to ones ear that makes it a beautiful sound, but then again look at all your great tenors and sopranos of the world, their greatist concerts has always had thier voices projected in the sound of wall that just ads to the legato effect to their voices .

  • They have beautiful vioces! XD

  • the "s"'s make a ssssss sound which sounds quite hissy and makes it hard to understand the words but it still sounds great. i'm singing it in a chior it's fantastic

  • 1:30-2:00

    gahhhhh this arrangement is fabulous.

  • Wow...this is lovely. Awesome job!

  • bravo!!

  • not beautiful - BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful...

But who is the cameraman filming at the end....... nice shoes

  • Maybe he got awestruck and forgot his camera :) This is a magnificent rendition of Shenandoah.

  • beautiful

  • this is amazing!

    what are the exact lyrics?

  • i love how they echo! i wish my school chorus was this good, great job kids!

  • What a horrible comment to post. You should read more and comment less.

  • wonderful! I love them!

  • this is beautiful, this is the best version 've ever heard!! i cant find the version i sang in chorus anywhere. the part where "away" is held out, we had 3 different parts that i guess isnt in the original.

  • what made this clip so good is due to the awesome acoustics of the cathedral.

  • i have to say truly the most remarkable rendition of shenandoah i ever heard , they definetly can hit the notes being the kids are so young, truly amazeing sound

  • my hairs are standing great job by these kids

  • Very, very beautiful performance.

  • I sing this song for school (I go to public)

  • tis seven long years since last ive seen you is the line for those who heard what Gexjo9 heard. Beautiful, maybe its the acoustics, but its definitely one of the best performances ive heard if not the best--too bad the recording starts about 1 min into the song and we hear clapping that sorta messes with the tranquility of the final chord. Amazing job, truly beautiful.

  • Those people sing awesomely.

  • beautiful. i recently saw a much smaller scale performance of this song, and was moved almost to tears. the acoustics are better where these guys are performing, though :p

  • "'Tis seven long years since last I see you"? Is that what they said? Lol, I assume English isn't their first language? Anyway, that was a goregous performance! One of the best I've heard! thanks!

  • a little known choir in New Zealand called Con Anima of Saint Patrick's college wellington absolutely nailed this song. probably their 1997 version was the best. not in the traditional way its been sung from what I have seen thus far. but they sang it with sould, real island soul.

  • Nailed it. One of my favorite recordings. Thank you

  • ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFULL

  • Beautiful rendition. Excellent job by the director and the choir. I wish there was more like it!

  • Beautiful!!!!

I have been looking for this arrangement of this song since I first heard it on the "Nixon" soundtrack. Did this choir perform it for the soundtrack? This sounds identical. Perfection!!! Simply perfect. Thank You so much for posting this.

  • Actually, I think the arrangement you heard on the "Nixon" soundtrack was performed by the Mormon Tabernachle Choir.

  • Thank u for the clear up! I will look for that one too. Love this song!!

  • poor sound quality ruined what would have been a wonderful experience

  • if this fantaskit song does not touch the hearts of men then we shall all pas away for the beauty of this song preformed by this quire is absolutely beautiful
