Does anyone have any other recordings of the 1973 Broadway run, with Michele? It's really a shame that almost nothing is preserved from Broadway shows in the past...I would LOVE to see this musical. I keep hoping that by some slim chance someone recorded some snippets from the show or something. But thank you so, so much, crocketg, for uploading this!!! =)
Hey, laddnyc: I absolutely love your anecdote...it's worth a musical of its own. Missed the therapy bit at the end...but so what? Frankly, more people should self-medicate by lip-synching to vinyl show tunes at dinner parties. And what is it with Miss Lee: I was minorly obsessed with her too in my youth.
Wow, I don't know "Seesaw" particularly well but this has to be the greatest B'way solioquy/11:00 song for an actress since "Rose's Turn." Why don't they write numbers like this anymore? Oh, yeah, I forgot...Musicals need to you belt without subtlety today. Forget about giving a song nuance, kid, just get out there and show your chops by screeching "Memory" or "I Dreamed a Dream." (Relax, I'm not trashing these songs, just the style in which one is expected to deliver them.)
Wow, probably the five greatest solo minutes for a Broadway actress since "Rose's Turn". Why don't they write show closing numbers like this anymore? Too complex and not catchy enough (ie; no potential for $ as a single?)? Or is it that this and other sung soliloquys like "Rose Turn" demand someone who can ACT the song and not just belt it? Why has the technique of acting a song fallen aside to be replaced by vocal power (ie: being able to belt without subtlety "Memory" or " I Dreamed a Dream"?)
Thank you again for posting. This just is another example of how I keep getting reminded how brilliant Cy Coleman was. One of the greatest Broadway composers ever. And wow...what a voice, Michele Lee! I need to investigate this show, I love this.
I saw SEESAW when I was in 6th grade and fell in love with Michelle Lee's Gittel! I saw it over and over, waited for her at the stage door, just to see her, and sang ALL her songs (lip sync to the original cast album) at my parents dinner parties I wrote her a letter telling her of my worship, she sent a postcard sized autographed picture, which I wore on a string around my neck for the rest of 6th grade. Needless to say, Therapy was a big part of
Saw the original Broadway show 4 times (with both Ken Howard and John Gavin as the male lead). Loved it! This brought back so many memories. The show was wonderful. Michele Lee was great! Thanks so much for posting!
It did leave one trace: The song "It's Not Where You Start, It's Where You Finish", from the show, is a great showstopping number that gets performed fairly often.
i'm working with her right now in ogunquit , maine on a new musical...summer of love.....and i feel truly blessed!!!
