To wspaniały śpiewak.
Great voice, a real legend. Please if you have the time take a look at my take on this. It is a great song and I hope I did it justice, /watch?v=BgbDA_GR5EU , thanks.
Recorded in February 1904 and never surpassed by anyone since. One hears the beauty of the aria and beauty of the soul of Enrico Caruso - despite the miserable recording technique.
Maybe the most beautiful recording of a tenor voice ever made.
Recordings like these are the reason I'm an avid fan of the growth in media preservation; I don't know if I would be as inspired as I am to continue my operatic path without recordings like this. Just the thought that after 90 years a legendary voice can still be heard!
I listen to this and just imagine the wonder of hearing him. He died 90 years ago today, August 2, 1921. Amazing to think of that. I knew so many who heard him, all are gone now. We have just the recordings to marvel at. Nothing was like him, and no one ever will be. He was a force of nature and perhaps as unique as the Grand canyon or the Amazon. I have known his voice since I was a boy, and even had the chance to chat with his son on the phone.. I listen here and learn all over again why I do

This beautiful song with Caruso is background music in "Matchpoint", an interesting film by Woody Allen 'Woody Allen with a surprising end. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is the principal actor and the music is perfect. You must see it and listen to it.
@OperaFanCantor - what a dizzying experience it had to have been to hear him sing live. thankfully, many great tenors have sung and continue to sing, however, these recordings suggest something very special and as you say - unique. ... bewitching! bravo caruso!
Fabulous performance. Nobody, not even Pavarotti came close to the way that Caruso held out his phrases so very long, had so many different wonderful qualities in his voice. Mario Lanza, in my opinion came the closest, but even he was not in the same league.
Unfortunately i've known that melody from "Match Point" soundtrack. I haven't heard it before. It's a masterpiece! (sorry for my english, maybe i did some mistakes, i'm from Poland;)
3:50 gives chills to the very bone. I'm no opera fanatic, nor am I a connoisseur of tenor singers. I listen to Blink 182 ha. However, this performance so captivated me that my eyes are currently glued to the image of Caruso, wondering how any human could produce such docile tones.... Plus, I'm stoned.
This one seems to be so slow. So boring... It's like a funebre. Pavarotti's version is more divine, majestic and powerful. This one is more soulful but Pavarotti is King. Caruso is the Master but Pavarotti is the King.
The suggestion of vocal Enrico Caruso will remain unique forever and for all. He was not a simple tenor or the tenor. It was the "voice" for excellence. Basso, baritono and tenore together. Had everything: power, sweetness, expressiveness, color, technique, style and agility. His voice was a universe of colors and emotions can cover the entire musical range.
Amazing! The greatest voice ever despite the time and quality of recording, the beauty of the voice and the depth of emotion is still there. Gratitude and love for ever!
The best rendition I have heard is by Tito Schipa. He has a moderate top and bottom, but what a middle range! I heard it on the soundtrack from the film "Lorenzo's Oil".
@opalaedu You have to remember, this recording is probably 100 years old, give or take 5 years, so there's no way that all the expression Caruso had, in any recording, would show up. I agree that Pavarotti sings the crap out of this aria, but Caruso is the master, hands down. He understands the text completely on so many levels, and never sings any 2 phrases with similarities. It's an amazing thing, the human voice, and Caruso used his so well, every time he performed/recorded.
Caruso was and is till today the greatest tenor we could hear. His voice is the top of operasung. I dont know, but I mean never a better tenor will come.
Wow. that is smooth. Pavarotti stresses me out. Is anyone allowed to say they dislike Pavarotti? Does one look like a savage just by saying that? I think Caruso is much better.
@HerbicidalManiac :-P no one worth it would judge your tastes... Me, I like most of the "great tenors", each of them has their own personal style. Pavarotti transmits some raw passion while Carusso's singing shows affected virtuosism. Yet I refer Pavarotti. Just tastes.
The voice of Enrico Caruso is unparalled in the recorded history of tenors. He was lyrical, dramatic, spinto - even baritone. Not least: whatever he sang, he sang with a full heart. Nothing phony, no show, not being "interesting" or trying to impress, just singing to the fullest extent of his ability.
@moveonupcb I don't like the concept of "perfection" in music. There's no such thing. This is beautiful, to be sure; but it's meaningless to say that it's perfect. If singing were nothing more than a matter of trying to achieve perfect intonation, we would say that computers are the best singers. And of course we don't.
Hate it as you do the word still exits and always will but when i listen to carusos ending of la donna mobile that is just about perfect compared to every other singer i've heard but i know what you mean. Beautiful is just another ambiguous word though as well. There is a beautifulness in ugliness as well! Maybe we are all using meaningless words!
I don't object to the word itself; I object to its use in evaluating music. There are other contexts (measurement, for example) where "perfection" is a useful concept. At any rate, it's clear that we both enjoy this performance, and that's the main point.
again Caruso wouldn't have stayed in Italy if some American students had seen he could break glasses- It makes me wonder in today's world with the trash that is I've got talent what Caruso would stand as ????
and without the computers and the mixing Caruso still stands out like a delineation of a mountain tip with the last remnant's of winter's snow. Thats the threshold
For a voice this big, this powerful, to be able to sing the pianissimo, the soft, delicate, diminutive moments is just stunning. And yes, tomfroekjaer...I see your wonderful comments everywhere...for Caruso's voice to overcome the limitations of the medium is just stunning. Caruso had it all: power, emotion, delicacy, heart, color, character... what a gift he is.. .
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaao!!!
Listen..the realm of opera singers consists of cults and loyalties..
I was skeptical of Domingo doing Parsifal, and it wound up being the best performance I have ever seen.
If you want to find good recordings, go back to Bruno Walter's NY Philharmonic. But if you want to call Furtwangler's 1943 recordings (when the Berlin Phil. was on the decline) great recordings, and this out of tune recording, then have a ball.
Not only the realm of opera singers consists of cults and loyalties. The entire society you are living in is a cult and your school, family and your friends create cults. You are obviously a member of the Shostakovich cult like I am a member of the Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Caruso cults. So what's your point ?
I wouldn't consider myself a member of any cult..rather true to good art instead of being partisan. I love Bruckner, but some of his symphonies are long, monotonous, and predictable at points...I love Mahler, however I feel M2 is way overblown and not efficient.
@tomfroekjaer You probably right..... he sing this aria like it was hi own. I'm curies if Donizetti would like it as well? Perhaps this is what he intended....i guess we'll never know.
What is amazing is his voice sound this excellent on such primitive recording equipment. Compare his recordings to others of the same time period...they don't even compare! I think is proof, right there, he is superior over many others.
The engineer doing these recordings for Victor was a real expert at making the most of the acoustic recording process. A lot of recordings from this period are very poor, but these are much better.
Caruso was and is till today the greatest Tenor of all we can hear. He is and was the top of man voices ! Also i in his voice the best actor is to hear.

If you want to find good recordings, go back to Bruno Walter's NY Philharmonic. But if you want to call Furtwangler's 1943 recordings (when the Berlin Phil. was on the decline) great recordings, and this out of tune recording, then have a ball.

This is a necessary recording in the history of opera and vocal performance.

Not only the realm of opera singers consists of cults and loyalties. The entire society you are living in is a cult and your school, family and your friends create cults. You are obviously a member of the Shostakovich cult like I am a member of the Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Caruso cults. So what's your point ?
tomfroekjaer 2 years ago
I wouldn't consider myself a member of any cult..rather true to good art instead of being partisan. I love Bruckner, but some of his symphonies are long, monotonous, and predictable at points...I love Mahler, however I feel M2 is way overblown and not efficient.

Sweet, soft, comforting yet raptured... He sings this in both poised and lyrical manner. This is how I exactly want this aria to be sung.

In this aria nobody can even remotely be compared to Caruso - and we at best only hear half of what that golden voice sounded like live.
tomfroekjaer 2 years ago 29
@tomfroekjaer You probably right..... he sing this aria like it was hi own. I'm curies if Donizetti would like it as well? Perhaps this is what he intended....i guess we'll never know.

What is amazing is his voice sound this excellent on such primitive recording equipment. Compare his recordings to others of the same time period...they don't even compare! I think is proof, right there, he is superior over many others.

The engineer doing these recordings for Victor was a real expert at making the most of the acoustic recording process. A lot of recordings from this period are very poor, but these are much better.

I'm pretty certain this is a 1911 recording, no?
spunkyboyroy 2 years ago
No, this is for sure the 1904 recording when Caruso was more lyrical. The 1911 was used in Woody Allen's film Match Point, but sounds more spinto.
tomfroekjaer 2 years ago
Recorded 1st February 1904 - at his first Victor session - in Carnegie Hall.
The aria was spread over a 10" and an 12" side, both had the Mx. number 996.

That is totally correct, saltburner2.

In my humble opinion, i think both pavaroti and caruso are the best of the history.

As perfect as possible. Schipa loved the great voice. Has their been a tenor to doubt the maestro.
