@juanohv i used various kinds of strings here, it depends on tone you're searching. feedback cannot be eliminated, so not loud volume or far from the speaker. someone put something into the F holes, but more on slim hollow body like 335... here you should put a lot of things inside!
@MrBlackstratocaster you're right, but i can just play on my style, i'm not a jazz player but i enjoy play sometime even this one. You can find easily skilled players on jazz side even with this guitar. With the EJ (i leaved out) this guitar play more like a telecaster than a jazz hollow guitar anyway, the tone was very, very different from expected one
@MrJessehendrix10 here i had jazz strings, the d'addario chrome 11-50. the "trick" was the pickups (even too much sparkling, i leave out of the guitar). I tried some different pickup on this guitar, i can say the stock one was very poor. Put something different in, for example a paf like (Wilkinson did excellent paf's at a very affordable price) and improvement is big. flat or not wounding has a very different feel, this depends on taste, if you prefer a conventional tone use common string
That is just wonderful, skillful playing. And the EJ's sound great coming out of that hollow jewel. These sound like old humbuckers like some Guild had on their Starfire line. That explains at least part of that tortured tone Dave Davies wrung out of it on stuff like "You Really Got Me." Thanks.
By the way, with as much treble response as these pickups have, do you think replacing the bridge w/a chrome or brass one would make it too brittle or bright sounding?
@WormOfTheWorld EJ custom is much brighter than the SD Jazz, equalization here can seem has more bass than it really get thanks for guitar and tone (and anyway it play very bright, sometime it seem a tele!). Is not exactly like a single like noiseless pickup (which are humbucking anyway), but EJ has a sort of chime typical of singles with some air of a piezo; splited seem really like a piezo pickup, how bright become. Can be a good choice but for the right instrument, risk to have too
@WormOfTheWorld too many highs and to weak basses is still present, and the attack is quite hard (like a single more or less) so miss the gentle response of a paf for example, so you need the right tone. in general i prefer the seymour duncan jazz to this one, for a bridge position, but this is very good in the right contest... but JB and Jazz can be use everywhere, this couple is a bit extreme in shaping so is not suitable for any guitar
Amazing range of expression and tone! Love the way the pickups let you turn the volume up and get vastly different qualities from the guitar depending on your playing technique.
Did you do anything to the electronics other than drop in the DiMazrio pickups? Or is it simply a stock Epiphone Joe Pass plus the tusq nut?
@WormOfTheWorld hi :) when i did that video i had still the ugly plastic nut (is the worst plastic nut i ever seen in any guitar, include 79$ guitars!) so i only had the ej custom pickups. i put out those pickups, plays nicely but it seem a telecaster more than a jazz guitar, is very good but i've yet different kind of guitars. putting back the stock pickups i notice them are quite poor... i'm planning to changing in the future. it is a good instruments changing that 2 components
@rafport do you have any experience using the Seymour Duncan JB & Jazz pickup combination? If so, how would you compare the EJ Customs to the Seymour Duncans?
To me it sounds like the EJs sound a lot like the SD Jazz pickup, but with more bass and clarity whether played clean or distorted. But when you have the selector switch on both bridge and neck (from 0:50 to 1:12 in the video) there appears to be a drop in volume. Is that just you changing how hard you were picking?
@MarkAscheMusic thanks. they're crystal and glassy pickups, they play in some way like a single coil (splitted they seem like a piezo, for tons of brillance and heights). basses are moderate, are a good abination for a bass resonant instrument. different from lot of pickups on sales. let me know!
Man I love how a set of good pups will up the ante in a "budget" guitar. I have a MIM Strat and a MIK Dean Hardtail with after-market pups and a pro setup for half the price of the bone stock MIA versions.
@andrewt248 is the materials (and especially pickups) that make the tone, not the brand, not the finish, not the price... thank you for apreciating :)
@rafport thanks man, mine was the same and its a korean. nothing wrong with it, just that the original gold hardware fades fast. going to replace the tuners, nut and put in the custom EJs!
@rono8582 my tuners are by grover, pretty good. nut was terrible and i replaced it. for pickups, consider the ej will transform your guitar in a pretty sparkle one and that can be very nice or not depending on taste. the neck ej will be biright and very interesting sounding, somethig "strat sounding" but even good for jazz. the bridge one can be very bright, it play something not too far from a telecaster, it can be good or not depending on taste... i'm not 100% convinced on it
Hey dude, what strings????how do you eliminate the feedback with distorcion????
