My Mom and Dad just came back from visiting the Crooked Rd and the old Carter family homestead. The stories they shared with me about what they learned was truly awesome and my Dad even got to sit in Johnny Cash's rocking chair.. GREAT VIDEO!!!! Thank You....
@mh605 A.P. is buried in a little family cemetery near the Copper Creek "bends" in Scott County, VA. It is on the north side of the Clinch Mountains. Out of Gate City, VA take highway 71 NE towards Nickelsville. About 6mi from Gate City, turn left onto a road at Snowflake. It would be best to stop at one of the small country stores along the road and ask some of the local residents precise directions, as you will be driving on dirt roads. The area remains much the same as in AP's time.
@mh605 Actually he's buried at the Mt. Vernon United Methodist church near the Carter Fold in VA. Also several members of this family are buried there. Its a short drive from where I live in Knoxville and would love to go there someday.
@mh605 He's buried in the cemetery at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Chrurch in Hiltons, VA. No dirt roads -- the church sits along AP Carter Highway (VA Rt 614), which is fully paved. Sara is there too. The church is very easy to find.
Since this was the last appearance. Does anyone know which was the actual last and final song they performed together?
Also does anyone know the best resource for the best video of them? I have bits and pieces but AP is very hard to come by.. DOes anyone recommend a dvd?
I believe "God gave Noah the rainbow sign" was likely the very last and final one--is that correct?
@phantomvibrationsX yes i think it was God gave Noah the rainbow sign... though sara and maybelle played later on, just without AP since he was dead. I dont know if ive ever seen a video with AP singing. if you do please tell me!! Thanks~ Robert
Also let me say that a study of The Carter Family is not a study of the past--it is a genealogy search----- not just musically, but for the soul of the country itself and what we stand for and ARE---as an entity. Heaven help the person who does not know or care who there parents are or where it is from which they came. Listen to the original "anchored in love devine" and you will even realize that the father of rock and roll----- IS AP CARTER!!.
we are so lucky to have this stuff because in those days microphones and recording equipment wasn''t great maybe someone will re master some of the old videos that are not too flash
I'm 45 years old, and I've been a Carter Family fan my entire life. I never knew this recording existed until right now. I would love to be able to download this and burn it to disk. Simply amazing find. Thanks so much for posting it.
I should edit my typing Treasure Treasure. AP played at a studio and would not accept the money, he only wanted to sell his pamphlets. He thought he had been forgotten but with him joining in with Maybelle and daughters the station was flooded with mail for HIM! God Bless AP - he gave away everything he ever owned and he is beloved in the Valley where he was born and died.
I would like to thank you very much. I am very thrilled to hear AP in 1953. I did not know that it even existed and I really thought I had every pressing The Carter Family made.
I recognized the tremble in AP's voice. I talked to people in Poor Valley just a week ago and learned more than I thought I would. His daughter wrote a few books and she
gives a very good commentary on their life in Poor Valley.
Thanks again, it is a treason. AP carries the day again.
Thanks so very much for sending this one to me. I have listened to them ever since I was a kid. They were the greatest. 5 *****. God bless you and the pics were heavenly also.
Robert, Thanks so much for sharing this with us. A little story for you Robert. When I was a young boy back in the mid 50s, Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters came to perform at a High School Gym near my home in the Missouri Ozarks. My ticket to get in to that show was .25 (twenty-five cents)! I can still see Maybelle holding that big guitar up to the mic and just picking the fire out of it, and the crowd simply went wild! I'll never forget it. FIVE STARS on this one Robert!
Wow Robert this has made my day. The Carter family are my favourites, from the oldest to the youngest. They have contributed so much to Country music. I have to admit though June Carter is just a little more favourite. Two lovely song you've posted & love those pictures
Beautiful song!

I just finished the book 'Will you miss me when I am gone'. How sorry I felt for AP when he was left in the valley alone. Thanks for this music.

FYI, this took place at the 1953 Jimmy Rodgers Memorial Show in Meridian, MS. A piece of music history right there.

Some people think I spend too much of my life studying the past but the time I've used to learn about The Carters was a lesson in character building.
