Really? i dont know much about theses power shots i had an exell or somthing like that for like 150.00 last year at freddy's (fread Myers) But ive played with is and i got a couple vids up with the power shot check them out.
I tried today in a shop both Ixus 860 and 870 and actually I must say that I prefer the old one (more intuitive to use). Is it me or they removed the LP (long play) mode on the new one? What about you guys, do u prefer the old 860 or the new 870 and why? Thanks!
Just a question. Does it fitted with a microphone for the videos? Do you know if some camera, with video possibilities, is fitted with a microphone? Thanks.
Excellent review. I've ordered this camera, and it should arrive tomorrow. I didn't go with the newer 870 model since I've seen some people complain about bad image quality.
Hi everyone, just a quick note to let you know I have a review of the new Canon IXUS 870IS / PowerShot SD 880IS ELPH at cameralabs - this is the replacement to the model featured in this video.
Thanks! PS - if you haven't already ordered the camera, look out for the new IXUS 870IS / SD 880IS - it's replacement. And do let us know how CHDK works out for you on the cameralabs forums!
love the videos, i've learnt loads, and your opinion/advice is great. came across them looking for new camera. I am split between SD790 and SD870 based on my budget and needs. What do you think is best Gordon?
I haven't tested the 790, so can't say, but the 860 and the TZ5 are two of my favourite compacts! It's a case of boiling down which features mean more to you. Check our full reviews of both cameras at cameralabs . com to compare them...
About Canon SD870, I have 2 questions in particular:
1. Does the time lapse feature standalone? I want to make sure that it doesn't require a laptop while making an outdoor video.
2. In case I am making a time lapse video and I have a power outlet available. Is it possible for me to run the camera directly from some sort of AC adapter (instead of battries)? I am really concerned about 2 hour battery-up-time on 2 second interval time lapse video.
hey just wondering and needs some help. im going to travel soon and wondering what would be the best camera. the ixus 860 IS or the IXUS 960 IS???? thanks guys
I haven't tested the 960 IS so can't comment, but the 860 IS is still a great camera. Do also consider the Panasonic TZ5 - see our reviews and forum at cameralabs . com.
hey i had a look at your website all i can is WOW!! i really like ur reviews they are superb and helpful. i was just wondering how soon or if you are going to do a review of the 960IS??? because i really wanted to get the camera and the only thing stopin me is i havent got ur recomendation or approval yet. Thanks mate
hey there, i failed to mention i am also a first time camera buyer. after researchin the entire day i have narrowed it down to the Ixus 860 and the panasonic TZ5. i have noted that u have given the TZ5 1% better then the 860. i am travelin to europe soon and the only thing that is keepin me back from buyin the TZ5 is bigger size and overall look of it comapred to the 860. my question is should this hold me back from getting the TZ5 over the 860?? thanks for bearin with me mate uve been a champ
Only you can decide which features are more important to you! I'd say the 10x zoom of the TZ5 is ultimately more userful, but you may prefer the look and feel of the 860 IS. I'd recommend you pick up both cameras in person to try them for size. Any other Qs, feel free to post on the cameralabs forum!
This guy speaks very seriously then say : demonic red eye lol. Anyway, This camera is missing HD movie recording and a decent zoom. and 16 x 9 picture format.
Tricky question as there's different categories and of course one which was fantastic a few years ago is not so impressive today! To see the models which I think are the best right now though, check out the best buys section at cameralabs . com...
Nope, both the focus and optical zoom are locked once you start filming. There's full details about this camera in our review at the Cameralabs . com website!
You can't use optical zoom while recording. You have to zoom in before you start recording. On the other hand you can use digital zoom while recording.
I'm interested in a camera that can be able to record a video at a concert (semi-dark place I would assume), would you recommend this Canon SD870 for it? Do you think the battery would last an hour on the highest quality setting? Thank you.
I don't know how long the battery would last if you're just filming video, but if video is what you really want, I'd recommend a camcorder above any still camera any day.
Which digital camera would you recommend that is the best of the worst to use for filming? I'm looking for something compact. What camcorder would you recommend? How about the Canon T-X1?
I haven't tested the TX1, sorry! The best video I've seen on a still camera would be either the Canon S5 IS or the Panansonic TZ5, but again both are well below that of a proper camcorder, especially in terms of audio.
I just ordered this online after an exhaustive review of similar cameras. Watching this video just got me more excited about my purchase. Though I already bought the camera, I wanted to say I thought this was a well-done review and I plan to subscribe to your channel. Thanks!
As usual very handy review. Im about to purchase this model. I also has a Canon S5IS. Is the canon SD870IS has a Manual mode to make pictures. you know, as TV and AV settings?
With the top switch set to normal shooting and the mode set to Manual, you can adjust the exposure compensation, white balance, My Colours options, the metering, image compression and resolution. The 860IS / SD870 IS offers shutter speeds from 15 seconds to 1/1600, but sadly no direct means for you to manually adjust them or the aperture even in the 'Manual' mode. Please see our review at the Cameralabs site for full details...
very excellent review, i purchased this last week and i'm expecting it to arrive tomorrow!! I'm really looking forward to using it...thanks for the great information
Hi Gordon, grettings from Venezuela, Your reviews are awesome. One question: SD870 has only 2 times of time lapse? (1 and 2 seconds?) Its possible to set more than that?
Good review. For constructive criticism, I personally would've liked to know a bit more about battery indicator and other menu options.
I had the IXUS 40, but it recently drowned. Im not 100% sure, but i think i could change the aperture and shutter speed in the manual setting. This might be a stupid question, but the IXUS 40 is a few years old now and yet you're saying you cant do the same on the IXUS 860IS, even though its a new model?? Seems really strange of canon to do that if so.
Thanks for your reply. I just got this camera but cannot figure out how to take a picture of a fast moving object without it becoming just a blur...(since I can't change the shutter speed) - any advice?
If you increase the ISO sensitivity, the camera will be forced to use a faster shutter speed - but put it back to auto afterwards as it reduces the quality. Or, try a sports scene preset mode.
I want the Canon PowerShot SD870, but I'm was thinking of getting the Canon PowerShot SD850 because it's cheaper. Is the SD850 worth all that money? or should I spend a few more bucks on the SD870?
Hi, I've not tested the Ixus 950 / 960, but even though it has higher resolution (12 Mpixels), I prefer the spec of the 860 IS - I prefer its wider angle lens and bigger 3in screen. So that means I'd also prefer the TZ3 to the 950 / 960, especially with its 10x zoom.
How dark? If it's completely dark, look at the Nightshot facility on the Sony H9 - we have a video on youtube and a full review at the Cameralabs website
I just bought this camera, can't stop drooling over it! This works like a dream, especially for me because I'd been using a 4 mp sony cybershot with 1" screen and 3x DIGITAL zoom.
I'm a bit of a photography beginner, though I did decide on the 860IS, and it's arriving at my door tomorrow. I mainly decided on it because of the wide angle. However, from the reviews I've read, people are talking about bad chromatic aberration with the wide angle shots on this camera.
As I learn more about photography and editing my photos in photoshop and such, am I going to regret buying this camera because of this? Or was I just looking at comments from really super picky photographers?
Manul mode just unlocks more settings. The bigger the ISO number, the more sensitive it becomes to light - allowing you to take photos in darker conditions - but the bigger the ISO number, the worse the quality. So ISO 80 is the best quality setting, but you'll need lots of light.
Hi, I've not tested the Ixus 960, but even though it has higher resolution (12 Mpixels), I prefer the spec of the 860 IS - I prefer its wider angle lens and bigger 3in screen. Depends which features you prefer yourself!
Hi, I'm afraid I haven't tested the F40fd so can't comment. You can find a list of the compacts I have tested and can recommend in the Best Buys section at the Cameralabs website!
Gordon, Thank you for the great review. I have just one question. In your opinion withc is better or worth the buck? Canon Powershot SD870, or Canon Powershot SD750? I don't mind paying the extra dollar for quality or features. Thanks!
I haven't tested the T200 so can't comment, but I'll be doing the T70 soon... To see which compacts we recommend, check the Compact Best Buys section at the Cameralabs website...
Hello Gordon, At the end of the video you said there is no Shutter speed control. I would presume and correct me if i am wrong if you go to the second vertical option of Exposure and press Menu it might take you to the Shutter speed setting. As i said i am not 100% sure so i may be wrong here
Hi Hanzakbar, good point. The setting you're talking about does let you adjust the shutter speed, but sadly only for long exposures. Like most compacts, there's no general shutter (or aperture) priority mode.
Thanks CanOfSpam! Sounds like you're describing one of Sony's latest cameras - the T200 and T70 have big touchscreens on the back, and I'll be testing the T70 very soon!
Touch screen in a camera never made any sense to me, specially when you will be touching then after every often. After touching those screen's you should look at the mess made up on them so do remember to carry around a cloth with you all the time. Sony touch screen's are good looking but they are not very responsive (specially the smile shutter) and i personally won't like poking on the screen every time i will be taking the picture as it will take ages to capture a shot.
I wish I was rich enough to buy them all! Like other professional publications, Cameralabs is lent cameras for testing by the manufacturers. And before you ask, they do ask for them all back!

I have this camera. But is manual mode is better than auto? And is ISO80 better than ISO1600?
DidoLT 4 years ago
Manul mode just unlocks more settings. The bigger the ISO number, the more sensitive it becomes to light - allowing you to take photos in darker conditions - but the bigger the ISO number, the worse the quality. So ISO 80 is the best quality setting, but you'll need lots of light.

Hello Gordon, im considering of buying either the ixus 860is or the ixus 960 is, which one would you recommend? price isnt a problem.
idrinkcolaz 4 years ago
Hi, I've not tested the Ixus 960, but even though it has higher resolution (12 Mpixels), I prefer the spec of the 860 IS - I prefer its wider angle lens and bigger 3in screen. Depends which features you prefer yourself!

Hi Gordon. Im going to buy a new camera for my parents to christmas. Which camera do you think is the best choice? 860IS or Fuji Finepix F40fd.
F40FD dont have IS but it sounds like its good anyway.
kimpen 4 years ago
Hi, I'm afraid I haven't tested the F40fd so can't comment. You can find a list of the compacts I have tested and can recommend in the Best Buys section at the Cameralabs website!

Gordon, Thank you for the great review. I have just one question. In your opinion withc is better or worth the buck? Canon Powershot SD870, or Canon Powershot SD750? I don't mind paying the extra dollar for quality or features. Thanks!

I haven't tested the SD750 myself, but I'd personally go for the SD870 as it has a wider angle lens...
cameralabs 4 years ago
yeh, I really like taht on it. Thank you

Maybe you could do a review on the sd 850 IS?
That one interests me because of the optical view finder.
Thanks

nice review. but may i know what's the Hi ISO for?
honesthua 4 years ago
Hi ISO is the same as Auto ISO, but it allows the camera to use higher sensitivities - albeit at the cost of reduced quality at the higher settings.
cameralabs 4 years ago
Oh.. meaning it's for night shots??
honesthua 4 years ago
Yes, at night, or indoor, or dawn / dusk conditions... anytime when it's not bright enough to handhold a shot confidently...

ultraslan43 4 years ago
I haven't tested the T200 so can't comment, but I'll be doing the T70 soon... To see which compacts we recommend, check the Compact Best Buys section at the Cameralabs website...

Hello Gordon, At the end of the video you said there is no Shutter speed control. I would presume and correct me if i am wrong if you go to the second vertical option of Exposure and press Menu it might take you to the Shutter speed setting. As i said i am not 100% sure so i may be wrong here
hanzakbar 4 years ago
Hi Hanzakbar, good point. The setting you're talking about does let you adjust the shutter speed, but sadly only for long exposures. Like most compacts, there's no general shutter (or aperture) priority mode.
cameralabs 4 years ago
Oh, and another thing. I liked the view from your shooting position. :)
TalNitzan 4 years ago
I don't know why but the first comment didn't send.
Anyway, I wrote about the big screen and stuff.. it doesn't matter
TalNitzan 4 years ago
Hm, you would think that having a touchscreen would be a great solution for this camera since the screen is so dominating.
Nice review! (As allways)
CanOfSpam 4 years ago
Thanks CanOfSpam! Sounds like you're describing one of Sony's latest cameras - the T200 and T70 have big touchscreens on the back, and I'll be testing the T70 very soon!
cameralabs 4 years ago
Touch screen in a camera never made any sense to me, specially when you will be touching then after every often. After touching those screen's you should look at the mess made up on them so do remember to carry around a cloth with you all the time. Sony touch screen's are good looking but they are not very responsive (specially the smile shutter) and i personally won't like poking on the screen every time i will be taking the picture as it will take ages to capture a shot.
hanzakbar 4 years ago
Till the day you can make dirty-free screens they better skip that yes! But it shouldn't take too long, considering the new "nano" science.

Did you buy or rent camera for each review?
If you buy, you must be rich :)
kaihao96 4 years ago
I wish I was rich enough to buy them all! Like other professional publications, Cameralabs is lent cameras for testing by the manufacturers. And before you ask, they do ask for them all back!
