For your arguement to hold any water, one needs to believe that prejudices against minorities no longer affect our society. Unfortunately, they do. Therefore, Richardson's comment makes perfectly good sence (especially when he made it, presumably in the 80s.) Reverse racism against whites IS a problem insofar as all prejudices divide our societies. In that respect, his comment could be viewed as somewhat offensive. But your question does much worse.

I also dispute your claims of equivalency. An analogous threat to a perceived group including German-Americans and old settler Scots-Irish no longer exists, as it did when nativists were "Anglo-Saxon" only. The analogous politician's comment would be taken much as Richardson's has.
