I have an older version of this lens and I have to say it's sharp even used wide open at f/5.6. I use it on a sturdy air suspension Titian tripod and I use a Gittos/Manfrotto gimbal head. I can balance the lens /camra combo so perfectly that I only need the tip of one finger to point it where I want to look and when I let go of the lens/camera it stay's put, no dropping down or tilting upward. All in all a great way to use such a supertelephoto lens. My lens is hevier it weighs 13.5 lbs.

I don't understand the negativity. If your a Nikon fan and have money for Nikkor lenses then excellent. Or if you're a Canon fan and have money for L lenses then excellent. But why knock Sigma? If you're so posh and high on the horse spend the money on Leica and have your limo shuttle you from shoot to shoot. I don't get the negativity. 99% of the time people want to criticize equipment when really its their lack of ability that makes their pictures look so poor, not the equipment. :-)

Hi Cleric. I see you are a new Canon user with an entry lvl dSLR (the arrogant "all other than the biggest brand/brand I own fucking suck" attitude). Sigma's presenter's are really below their professional level, I agree. You may think that their optics look cheap, but they certainly don't feel and handle that way - at all! My 17-70mm 2.8-4.5 definitely feels solid, comes with a hood and takes great pictures. All for a very competitive price.
