  • Love the way you're using what looks to be a piano stool.

  • Thanks for the cool video! You did an awesome job come on with more videos so all of us can learn!

  • Hi,

Awesome video there is lots of things to learn and wow the videos on you tube for spinners are great. I have drop spindles, Ashford single drive spinning wheel, 2 great wheels, drum carder and a floor loom. I sure went all out but I just love all of this stuff. I hope to meet some new friends that loves to spin.

Karen Watson (age 51) Indiana, USA

  • Dear Karen so nice to hear from you!!! My ashford is so old, it does not work anymore. I have issues with drop spindles and plying... any suggestions?

Also thanks for your support in watching my video, and I would love to see you spin in action!!

    blessings, grace

  • @craftybearquilts, Where did you get your Ashford?

  • thanks a lot for these lovely videos

  • Hi Halalsilks, i too am new to spinning. Could you please tell me how you "cast" the yarn off, as in, how do you tie it, so you dont lose the twist, after you finish, but before you set it?

Also, could you please do us a video of plying with a drop spindle?

    kindest...

  • Thanks Betty, I am right now trying to get plying with a drop spindle down pat. I DO have a video that talks of tying off the yarn I think it is in my spinning with grace #1, keep watching towards middle. Thanks for your kind words!

  • Dear Betty If you are using a hand spindle just tie it around the hook to keep the twist. All spindles, even on a wheel bobbin, you will find that with time, the twist shall be lost. So if you want a bouncier yarn you can try to gently respin, to put back a bit of twist into it... OR you can like many of us do, slightly overtwist as you spin. On a wheel I will wrap the ply over the Upright maiden and tie it around that. Hope this helps. I will try to do more videos soon, thanks for watching! :)

  • Anything that has to do with fiber roving and how to video's on this subject. Anything to do with knitting and crocheting as well. Thank you so much for your reply.

  • So happy to hear from you, let me know how you like the newest videos. I have to get organized! I just put up a new one on dry kool aid dyeing of wool fleece

  • Thanks so much that was a big help. I hope that you will be posting more video's

  • I so appreciate your comments, I just got a small digital video camera so plan to! What would you like to see?

  • Part 2.

Let it soak, rinse well.Gently squeeze out excess water & roll in a towel,to extract more water. At this point you can whack it on your counter a few times to help the yarn to soften. Lastly,Hang the damp loop of yarn on a door knob. Lay a can that is not too heavy, like a can of mushrooms or a soup can inside the loop of yarn. Now just let it dry and it will set the twist. :)

  • To let you know...I personally still wind all my singles onto a ball winder as I make the plys. This is so i can rejoin the ends of each ball onto each other by hand spindle. Then I will wind onto the kniddy for setting the twist. You do not have to set the twist if you want to knit a cool effect of slanting. You just put extra twist in your yarn when spinning and you can knit right off the spindle!

  • NOTE: IF you only have a small amt of yarn or if it is quite delicate, DO NOT use the can method, just use a washcloth or small hand towel to set into the loop to set the twist. I have found that the if the weight is TOO heavy, it can really make your yarn loose it's bounce!! however that is a good yarn for lace...

    blessings, grace, always experimenting

  • Thanks, I am just learning this craft and I am excited to learn all that I can. I hope this does not sound silly. Do you leave your yarn on the spinndle or take it off first to set the twist?

  • Oh please ask away! You tube is making me do this in 2 parts .

Part 1. To set the twist, put yarn onto a kniddy knoddy ( or wrap the wool around your arm )Tie this off in sections so it won't tangle when washed. First soak the wool in a bit of pretty warm water, with a few drops of dish detergent.

  • Do have to set the twist or can you go ahead and knit or crochet from the ball you just did? Thanks

  • Thanks so much for viewing this video of mine! You can set the twist right away. When You spin on a hand spindle put a bit of extra twist in the ply as you spin, as it will relax the longer it is on the spindle. I have set mine in hot water, I have heard many others set their singles by putting on a kniddy knoddy and holding it over steam. ( carefully!) I do not think this really felts the wool as you need abrasiveness to to full or felt the wool, and soap!

    smiles,grace
