Emo wasn't all bad. It was bands like this that drove Emo bands to write "their" music. Listen to all of Blink 182's albums in order, and see the progression they made, and that (I think) is a great example of how music progressed/changed from punk to punk rock - punk pop - emo etc.

First off emo is short for emotional hardcore, the first emo band was called rites of spring and formed in the late 80's it wasnt til a more melodic and catchy band called Cap N JAzz hit the scene that the movement really gained a crowd, However it didnt really blow up til a band from the midwest called the get up kids infused melodid punk rock with pop sesnablities finally making way for the drive thru record bands,
