  • are you going to review kick-ass? oh and kick ass review

  • @L337W0LF lol Yep, sure will down the line.

    -CL

  • I'd still really like to hear your analysis of the watch.

  • By the way, thanks for doing this review! Enjoyed it. :)

  • I completely disagree that the Theatrical and Directors cuts are just shortened versions of the Ultimate cut. Snyder himself called the UC just "an experiment."

The DC is "the movie." The TC is a shorter version of "the movie." The UC is a longer version of "the movie."

I also totally disagree that the BF stuff was "seamlessly interwoven" in the movie. The UC was a very interesting mess. An experiment worth trying, but a failed one. (see my video review for full explanation)

  • awesome review

  • where is that animated watchmen intro from? it is hilarious

  • @DwRockett "Saturday Morning Watchmen" its an animated parody that you can find on YouTube.

  • The thing that I don't get is how Ozymandias feels justified. The world didn't come to an end after the cold war, so obviously he didn't have to kill millions to "save" billions. He just wanted to make himself king judging by how he sort of worshiped Alexander the Great. So I think Rorschach would have been right to not only kill him but torture him.

  • @goodfellas1001 First of all, Watchmen is an alternate history. Just because we didn't nuke each other in real life doesn't mean it wouldn't have happened in the Watchmen world. Second, we see Nixon and his war council actually planning to preemptively attack the Russians in the movie. ( I don't know if this is shown in the comic or not, just got myself a copy yesterday and haven't finished it yet.) And Ozy cannot see 'our' world to see it didn't happen for us.

  • @MalzraAirwynn First of all, he admitted to tricking the world into world peace. So you know for a fact that the world couldn't have found another way to work it out besides killing alot of innocent people even though in our world they did. Another thing, it's just liberal propaganda to think that if Nixon was president that he would be stupid enough to bomb the whole planet.

  • @goodfellas1001 Yes, to say that the real Nixon would have wouldn't be fair. But Ozymandius doesn't live in our world. He lives in a fictional world made by Alan Moore. And in THAT world, that fictional world, Nixon would have bombed Russia. Ozy doesn't have the advantage we do now of looking back on history to see 'ww3 didn't happen.' He was living in the moment when the world was creeping closer and closer to nuclear war. What happened in OUR world does not dictate the fate of THEIR world.

  • @MalzraAirwynn Ok I see your point, like Inglorious Basterds diverges from reality. But the morals of Ozymandias still don't hold up well; Analogy: What if the conspiracy theories are true about Bush being responsible for 9/11, he did it for peace, so are his morals right?

  • @goodfellas1001 Ah, now whether Ozy IS justified is another can of worms entirely, and I won't say that he is justified, I was just explaining why the character thought he was doing a good thing.

  • im a big ron pearlman fan and the producer of watchmen wanted him to play the comedian but jefferey dean morgan played him perfectly i wish that in the novel Rorschach and the comedian could of had a few scenes together would of been great to see on the big screen.

  • This was a great series of reviews and makes me want to watch The Ultimate Cut and re-read the book as it's been sitting on my shelf for about two years and I've only read it once. I wish your reviews were even longer.

  • I've heard some people say that the information in the journal couldn't really actually uncover the 'joke,' only at best incriminate Adrian in the death of the comedian etc, because Rorschach didn't have any information on the 'joke' yet. If so that would dampen the impact of the final scene.

  • What on earth was that at the end!?

  • LOL I love the Saturday morning parody...makes me laugh all the time.

  • I have to applaud you. You spend all this time, giving us the in depth review of this epic movie that we all wanted, and I know you really enjoy it.

Thanks, Captain Logan. I love your intelligent analysis of superheroes and pop culture.

  • Rorschach Was Right. Just putting out there to see how we're different, because thats how I really feel.

  • When you said that Laurie was the result of the Comedian's rapie of Sally Jupiter. What we saw was an attempted rape that was interrupted by the Hooded Justice. I think the sex that conceived Laurie was consensual. Remember at the close where Sally had the picture of the first group of heroes and kissed Eddie Blake/ The Comedian? I think how you did this analysis was brilliant. That Saturday Morning Cartoon Watchmen was a funny but I don't think I'd watch it if it was an actual cartoon after w

  • Oh Cap, you didn't have to watch the first Swamp Thing! I wish you'd just have watch Return!

  • @Geekvolution Oh no I don't need to see it on blimp... just wish you didn't have time

    restrictions...

  • Fantastic review as always.

  • @Geekvolution Having seen the film with many people who haven't read the book, your concerns about Veidt obviously being the villain are completely justified. Goode's dark performance, coupled with the changed, more "effete" aesthetic of Ozy really makes it evident he's the bad guy from his first scene.

  • Awesome review. Am a bit behind the times on this, but I never got around to reading or watching Watchmen until quote recently. My girlfriend introduced it to me, and I'm glad she did.

  • This is why I subscribed a year ago. Reviews like this makes this channel one of the most informative and inspiring things on youtube. Captain, Keep up the phenomenal work.

  • there needs to be an ultimate cut of this review lol

  • God, I can write a book series about watchmen.

  • Great review. The ending you put on here was a nice little treat. I am going to do a little research on some of the stuff you talked about in the review.

  • I own a copy of Watchmen and Philosophy. Amazing analysis. You as well. Also, are you planning on doing a review of the Sin City film? It's almost word-for-word adapted from the graphic novels, even more so than Watchmen.

  • @ReverseNegativeTV Thanks a lot! I'd like to do Sin City at some point-- right now, I'm focusing on superhero movies and it doesn't really count for that, but I'm hoping to transition some day into other comic book movies that aren't superhero films.

  • 3.5 out of 4..that is not bad!!

    Thanks for the review!!

    So many information and questions.

Can t we just enjoy the movie? : )

  • Nice touch at the end XD

  • Thank you Captain Logan for helping me realize reading the graphic novel or watching the movie would be a waste of my time. I don't say this sarcastically - the praise for this serious has made it seem anywhere from interesting to tantalizing. Given the impact I had many major things "spoiled" for me over a decade ago, and it sounded like something I just wouldn't enjoy...

...because it asks questions that aren't exactly novel to me, and that have been weighed and considered more than once.

  • Your comment on the story saying "justice, regardless of life" and vice versa, and the comment of the Ultimate Joke on us at the end, blew my mind. Crushed it really.

Anyhow, I'll say this: Congratulations Captain Logan, you've crafted a better Rewind than Batman Begins, my personal fave, and not because this is Watchmen either by how you interpreted the story in ways I never thought of, and I think you've written your magnum opus of Rewinds/Essays. Applause. Roll on Snare Drum. Curtains.

  • Can I make a suggestion?

  • @J1P2K Why sure!

    -CL

  • @Geekvolution I suggest My Super Ex Girlfriend. I what to see how you Rewind that.

Also, Underdog, cause I kind of like that one.

  • lol the entire time watching this review i couldnt stop thinking about the watchmen theme song

  • Keep making reviews like this. I absolutely love them!!!!

  • i beleive watchmen is about the difference between villains and heroes and where is the line when a hero becomes a villain like ra's al ghul as he has herioic motives to sav the world but when is it when they go to far and become villains

  • Captain logan this was a great review as always. Your attention to detail and astute analysis is an inspiration to any one who is a film buff as well as a fan of great story telling.

  • Great review as always CL

  • I hope your Dark Knight review will be as thought-provoking as this review because I believe it can be just as long, if not longer than your watchmen review, without it feeling dragged out. Anyways, thanks for making your awesome videos, and I can't wait to see more of them.

  • hey cap would you consider V For Vendetta a superhero movie

  • That little cartoon parody you had at the end where is that from.

  • So uh Logan, When is The 6 part, V For Vendetta Review coming.?

  • Where can I find that funny little thing at the end? lol

  • Good and insightful review of the film, though ''Watchmen'' will always be the ''Phantom Menance'' of comic book films. I had high expectations for the film when I originally saw it back in 2009 and was very disappointed (even my hot date was too).

  • You don't have to apoligize for making a reveiw to long, I hope your dark knight reveiw is as long or mabey even longer.

  • It might have been your longest superhero rewind cap (which i never mind btw) but like you said there's no realistic way you could have done a review on watchmen with the normal time you spend on a review. And with that said i particularly enjoyed this last part the most (even with the hilariously bad cartoon), I might be alone on this but I'm a sucker for hearing you guys talk in depth about the characters and plot since i always learn something from it.

  • Great job, Cap.

  • 3.5 SERIOUSLY JUST, BECAUSE THE VILLAIN wasn't like the comics........ didn't you once say that an adaptation doesn't have to be exactly like the comic

  • @johnnyblazeksgldp Here's what I was trying to get at: it's not because the villain isn't exactly like the comic. Remember I said I like the ending in the film better. It's about what's *effective*. I didn't think Veidt's portrayal in the film was effective, even for a general audience. Hard to make the judgement call, since I already knew the character, but that's how it seemed to me. From the start, he feels like the villain, and that's a problem for me.

    -CL

  • @Geekvolution Logan, wow that was phenomenal ! Every part ! I also love that you threw in The Saturday morning Watchmen parody at the end !

  • @Geekvolution I hadn't read the graphic novel before I saw the film when it came out, and I sat there the whole time going 'Ozymandias acts like Lex Luthor'. Make of that what you will lol.

  • @johnnyblazeksgldp at 3.5 out of 4 is a really good rating

  • suprised you did not do a 12 part video like the 12 chapter book given you stoped at 6,still a fantastic review, thanks for reviewing it Cap.

  • @bluedragonfive LOL Thought about it!

    -CL

  • Hey Captain logan what do you think would happen if somehow superman and batman were involved in this story and they switched places with rorschach and dr manhatten, what do you think batman and superman would have chose also I love this movie because honestly Zack Snyder put his heart into this and honestly its closest were probably ever going to get to getting this book n the big screen

  • the Joker must love this movie

  • Just finished watching the whole review(all 6 parts) and can't think of ANYTHING even remotely close to how much i liked this review and how it made me look at both the book and the movie in a whole new light, so i'll put it in the simplest way possible: BEST REVIEW EVER!!!

  • Awesome review and adding the HarryPartridge vid at the end was gold.

  • Good review, definately one of the best superhero films ever made, this film does not get the credit it so rightfully deserves.

  • Is the philosophy behind Veidt's logic that life is intrinsically sacred, in which case he is attempting the long-term preservation of it in the face of potential nuclear annihilation? Or does he see society as worth preserving? Because if it's the former, the hypocrisy is pretty obvious. If the latter, it seems too random for a man who is so calculated. You'd think he'd take better care to make sure the RIGHT people survive to carry on his utopia. Or does he intend to take over?

  • @Vader47000 That's a great point!

    -CL

  • The good of the many outweighs the needs of the few, or vice versa?

  • Comment removed

  • Technically though, Laurie wasn't born out of rape. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but isn't Comedian's rape attempt stopped before he can carry it out? And Laurie is born out of a later affair they have after Sally consents to sleep with him? Is it just a matter of perspective to call that a rape situation because Blake once tried to rape her (not that Blake isn't a horrible person)? This isn't a criticism of the review, BTW, I had this notion about the original comic.

  • This was a great review. As long as you dont mind doing long ones, I LOVE to listen to them.

  • "Life is just a show, and death's the final joke."

  • @stitch99

"Life is pain... anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something"

  • @RationalRoundtable

"And now, we have the Meaning of Life. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try to be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try to live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations."

  • As someone who didn’t read the book until afterwards, I like the film a lot. This is based on a very comprehensive book and thus we have a more comprehensive film than your usual Zack Snyder picture (cough*Sucker Punch*cough). I doubt we’ll ever get a Superhero film as cerebral as Watchmen for quite a while.

  • This is the best superhero rewind we've gotten in a long while :) thank you Capt. I really enjoyed this.

  • great review cap, as always, but just to point out, laurie was the result of sally willingly having sex with comedian, after the rape, it doesnt diminish the idea idea her life is a "joke", but just fixing that.

  • Ha love HarryPartridge

  • ...the fact at the end of the comic Dan and Laurie are outlaws and had to I think either fake their deaths or just make new identities as they show up at her moms house with bleach blonde hair and he's got a mustache. If I recall it was from when they broke Rorschach out of prison and the fact that their identities are public knowledge when they did so! :P

I do think that counts as a plothole!

Sorry, Capt, for so many comments but only so much room to type! :D

  • everyone in watchmen is a joke . that is the point

  • Note: There's one 'not' too many in my previous post... Editing comments to fit is a chore unto itself.

  • My view is of the ending is more than likely that kid at the newspaper will probably run that journal without reading it as he running something from the "Junk pile"!

Also, in my POV of what would happen after it's published is... nothing because the other way I see Adrian fixing it is basically taking on Manhattan's role himself and threaten the whole planet that he'd do it all again if we don't behave... basically gaining peace threw tyranny!

Also you forgot another part of the comic ending...

  • The film is pretty much a masterpiece in my book as well... Even not having only seen the theatrical cut. I loved your analysis and hope you'll consider one day delving into those other aspects you didn't touch on. I'd love to be able to put out such material as Watchmen or this review, but I just don't have the mind for it. What thought-space I have is relegated to years of creative projects ahead of me, and ironically, I think my expressiveness suffers for it. Just great stuff!

  • Is it bad that I like the Comedian even though he's an evil evil man! My only complaint about the movie version is I like the fact he wore a Gimp mask after he got scarred! there was some symbolism in that too I think could be wrong!

I do like characters though like him with that simple nihilistic view of "it doesn't matter"! Basically I said this before this guy is like the freaking Joker in that he sees life as one big joke! Hell, he eve has a half Glasgow smile even!

  • Ok, you got triple thumbs up just for using Happy Harry's Saturday Morning Watchmen as your end credits! :D

So, Swamp Thing is next?! Ceeewwl I love both of those old movies! YES BOTH! :D

  • Amazing job Cap loved ur in depth look at this movie
