Losses of civilians were in the hundreds of thousands, which is terrible, yet the losses of a protracted land war would have been in the millions, so the best decision was made. The war was ended after the second bomb on Japan, so the nukes did solve the problem. Also, the US did not get involved until Japan bombed the US.

You need to have a knowledge of nuclear physics, it won't explode if you blow it up because it needs to reach a supercritical mass which is achieved by making a sphere.

@andyisapro Actually it does work. Ground Bursts just cause fall out in the local vicinity while true most nuclear detonations are air burst due to the thermal heat and blast range. But underground bunkers and areas that need contaminating will suit ground bursts more effectively. There is often a choice with US Nuclear weapons on delivery modes now a days.

What is scary is that the Soviets built this Dead Hand program during the Cold War that involved three men in a deep bunker that would launch all the nukes at the U.S. once the Soviet nation and leadership was wiped out. They did not even tell the U.S. of this doomsday tool as a deterrent against nuclear attack. It was kinda scary that IF even after the Soviet Union destroyed by US nukes they would still want to destroy the US with nukes even if there was no strategic importance in doing so.

@sebb3003 Are you on medication? 2 bombs on Japan. What does a nuke in world war 2 have to do with Russia? Hiroshima and Nagasaki were both Japanese cities. Losses of civilians were in the hundreds of thousands, which is terrible, yet the losses of a protracted land war would have been in the millions, so the best decision was made. The war was ended after the second bomb on Japan, so the nukes did solve the problem. Also, the US did not get involved until Japan bombed the US.

You need to have a knowledge of nuclear physics, it won't explode if you blow it up because it needs to reach a supercritical mass which is achieved by making a sphere.

The missiles that russia contains , is an automatic nuculear missiles so if U.S was even to detect the missle with satelites even if they collided it with another missle yes it wouldnt be as bad , but it would still make an impact responsible for millions of life.... plus if U.S was to collide with another missile the missle releases a chemical called radation which infacts oxygen and it will block the sun... so either way once a nuculear missle if up in the air its bad news that no one can end.

2. Radiation isn't a chemical. It's technically anything that "radiates" outwards, but in this context you're referring to Alpha (Helium Nuclei), Beta (Electron radiation) and Gamma (High energy light waves) radiation.
