I am at a loss for words... I have recently discovered Gaki no Tsukai and I am hooked. This though, this made med right out cry. This gave me a very much deeper view of both Matsumoto and Hamada. I wish their shows would air in Sweden but it is, sadly, a futile wish. Keep up the incredible work Downtown and Co!
who new Hamada san could sing so well let alone Matsumoto san could write something touching I really enjoy there comedy it is always a big hit with some of us in the states.
Matsumoto wrote this song but he said before that Hamada was even poorer than anybody during his childhood which i think is why matsumoto let him sing knowing he deserves this song
Matsumoto has expressed his feelings about growing up in a poor household in a poem titled Chicken Rice which Hamada turned into a song in 2004. In his poem, he wrote how laughter was the only way to get through those times. He credits his poverty for giving him a good imagination and sense of play, as it forced him to invent his own games to entertain himself. -Wiki
Matsumoto jokes about having a fairly impoverished childhood, but this is just such a sweet and well written song/poem. I really don't think children these days would understand.
no kids won't hate your comedy because i'm a fan of yours since i was 17 years old. and now im 21 thanks for the joy and laughter DOWNTOWN. i wish hamada-san will quit smoking just like matsumoto-san so he can make his health more healthier. I LOVE DOWNTOWN!! :D
@pinoy2105 this is a poem Matsumoto wrote about his poor childhood. He ordered chicken rice because it was inexpensive, as to not burden his parents. Now he's older and has tons of money to buy any food he wants but he's content with just chicken rice. Hope that helps a bit!
If there were anyone who I would never want to stop doing their thing, it would be Hamada and Matsumoto. I really, truly love these two. They make me laugh whenever I'm crying and make me cry whenever I see their strong relationship and their lives from poverty to success. These two are incredible in so many ways. They've changed so much and done so much. I admire them greatly.
Didn't Hamada and Mastumoto know each other since they were kids? On "Absolutely Tasty Mixed Rice", Hamada did tell the audience how he often see Matsumoto eat a specific brand of instant noodle since they were kids..
@YelloWhiteFlowers they're close, but it's just a very professional relationship; they have incredible respect for each other. hamada said if downtown ever split up, he'd never do comedy again because he can't imagine partnering with anyone besides matsumoto. matsumoto said basically the same thing as well.
@YelloWhiteFlowers never believe any wiki's on personal feelings.wikis are only good for gaming/general knowledge.Unless matsumoto or hamada themselves put it up,don't believe it.
@YelloWhiteFlowers Watch "What if Hamada died tomorrow?" - You might say it's from their "young ages", but I really think it says a lot and that they are still like that. I'd like to see the expressions and tone of voice they had when they said things that made them appear not that close, personally, I think they were joking or that it's an act, like somebody said. You can clearly notice when a crew has chemistry and this two... I can tell how much they respect and enjoy each others company.
For those saying they're not that close.. I think it's all an act. If they were to retire, I believe that they would very quickly learn how much they miss each other and how much they need each other. It's one thing to TELL people (especially publicly) that you don't have feelings for the other, and another to MEAN it. A song like this shows that there may be more to the story than they're letting on.
If you want to see Hamada Masatoshi singing, you can check his group called "H jungle with t "
I saw them on TV in 90's a lot. Tetsuya Komuro (he is the "t" of "H jungle with t ") composed all the songs. He once said that Hamada had a high pitch voice which was one of the selling points in singers, so that the group was formed.
I used to think of Hamada as an abusive prick when I saw him in Gaki no Tsukai, but this video showed me he's really a simple, modest, content man. Also, the lyrics have shown me a deeper side of Matsumoto, thanks for posting =)
Reading around about the Downtown Duo, it's said that, although they appear best pals on show, out of work they feel it's too awkward to go near eachother. They don't even have eachothers phone numbers. This really confused and saddened me..
@blakesquakers you should read hamada's book (if you can.) Their relationship is more complicated than a mere friendship since childhood or partner as comedic duo. At one point they stayed together at work and then on personal time as well, but they decided they had to separate the two to really work together. They still deeply respect each other, but now they just feel too awkward or shy to be with one another alone. Don't worry tho, they don't hate each other.
Hamada san and the others thanks for this song I will hear it in my handphone and hear it outside and on Chirstmas I am still wondering did the three of them created this song....
I'm thinking seriously to do a re-make using the two of my favourite vocaloids: Megurine Luka and Hatsune Miku ^_^ All I hope I'm not gonna spoil the song and the message inside of it.... But it will be a challenge to do it and... who knows? maybe a good to listen to it too -_^
Although they are not that close, they still have great respect for each other. Hamada has said that if they ever parted ways, he would never do comedy again as there is no one else he would like to make his partner and Matsumoto has expressed similar views. Tanaka reports seeing Matsumoto become visibly concerned whenever Hamada is sick and unable to come to work.
before i watched this, i was all like 'can this song realy make anyone cry?' but in the end, i had to agree with neutrino006. it melted my heart to tears. :)
I just had to add another comment :) This song is too great for just one.
Hamada Masatoshi and Matsumoto hitoshi are the greatest artists in the world. Not only do they have a great comedy duo which is the funniest thing in the world, but they can sing and write magic. A christmas song about chicken rice, that has very serious lyrics and meaning. :) I love these guys
this song is from a Japanese christmas album featuring BoA, and other famous Japanese pop artists,.. I downloaded the whole album from torrent only to get this song lol...
What I find strange is that, from what I read, Hamada/Matsumoto (who were childhood friends) claim to not have that bond anymore. Going so far as saying they don't even have each other's cell phones. Matsumoto even stated he hadn't seen Hamada's children except for one time. Very odd considering the on-screen bond they seem to have. Either great actors, or hiding the more 'sensitive' side of themselves from the public. Either way, great, heartfelt song.
It seems strange to most people, but if you've ever worked with someone for a long time on a project that's really close to both your hearts, you start to realize you have to keep your distance so that the business relationship doesn't suffer. At the same time, I think there's an element of forgetting how much two people can have beyond that business relationship too.
well, they're very very different, hamada is quite a blunt fellow, matsumoto is a sensitive character. still they share lots of memories from their childhood and from their coming up in society.
i think they have a "bond", more than a simple friendship.
@sooperfukker cant judge hamada, he was always there for matsu and matsu was always there for hamada when they were kids.
However right now, it is said by them that once they retire they dont think they'd remain friends. They see themselves as co workers now. And they see each other every day for work so they never really go over each others house for dinner or out places unless work related. They don't even have each others phone numbers.
This is the most serious song that I have heard. When I first heard it about one year ago, I cried. Tomorrow is christmas, soI would like to listen one more time
How come matsumoto parents Sometimes come on the show and not hamadas? What happened to his family?

well, they're very very different, hamada is quite a blunt fellow, matsumoto is a sensitive character. still they share lots of memories from their childhood and from their coming up in society.
i think they have a "bond", more than a simple friendship.

They don't even have each others phone numbers.
but i do think they have a great bond.

Wow. Considering they are celebrities, you never would have guessed they had a poor childhood. You learn something new everyday.
This song moved me. My respect goes to all the people who made it happen. Really makes me want to appreciate the holidays with my peers now. :>
