In painting a similar effect with acrylics and not using medium, one would use a dry-brush stroke to paint the disturbance on the water using horizontal, scumbling strokes. It is very important to keep the strokes absolutely horizontal for smooth water shadows. If the water is turbulent, one would have to vary the strokes and use horizontal, lazy "U" strokes. These strokes would be interlaced to form the pattern of turbulent water. Again, acrylic paints would be done dry-brush.
Hi lovely painting but is there a reason why you didnt reflect the mountains in the water ? just curious....your painting has given me lots of ideas thankyou
I'm glad you have been inspired by the video. That is the result I am after. Regarding the reflection of the mountains, in this scene they are distant and would not reflect. However, if you wish to reflect them in your painting, by all means do so. Happy Painting!
@ArtistJGH if you can see it, then there is no reason for it not to reflect, if you understand the physics you would know. The reflection is light that has bounced off the object, hitting the water, hitting your eyes. the normal is just hitting your eyes, but, if you can see it, and it is on the plane of reflection, it will still hit that object, the only haze you see with distance is the atmosphere getting in your way, but your mountains are quite visible. just saying :P
will this technique also work with acrylics if the paint is still wet?

The paint is wet for the entire session until the painting is complete. The distortion occurs with wet paint.
