  • I'll admit, when you first started applying the eyeshadow I thought oh no, this is not going to turn out right.....boy was I happy to be proven wrong! The finished look is really great and very reminiscent of Harlow. :)

  • @XWarumono Thanks so much! This was a fun video for me. :) I am going to be revisiting 'jean' in another video very soon, using a traditional pin curl set. Please stay tuned. ;-)

  • Happy 100th birthday Jean Harlow!!!!

  • i've tried what you did with her hair but the problem i have is my hair falling out of the pins when i go out so i look ridiculous :/ any suggestions as to what pins to use? or how to keep them from falling?

  • @SASHAxai The bobby pins I use are the ones you get at Sally's beauty Supply in the big cup. THey hold really well. And don't be afraid to use a lot of them since they're going underneath the hair. :)

  • she is beautiful!!! you really are the greatest.. i looove your videos.. thanks a lot !!!!

  • WOW! Stunning! She looks just like Jean Harlow!

  • I really loved this :) I've gotten a good understanding of the pin up look but the 1930's is a little trickier. I wish the makeup would have been this authentic in Aviator. :( Just because Gwen Stefani wears red lipstick and has blonde hair does not mean she looks ANYTHING like Jean Harlow. Also thank you for showing how to do dry pin curls. :)

  • @babyjane85388 In the makeup artist's defense, I believe that most of what you see of 'Harlow' in 'the Aviator' is her offscreen persona, which would have been more wearable. Still, the colors aren't quite right for the 30's, as represented in that film. :(

  • @LisaFreemontStreet Yes, I do understand that, but the bit you see her in is at an event, where she would have probably (in my opinion) worn her more theatrical makeup. Anyways, the eyebrows were what really got me, because obviously as you showed, they could have faked the drawn on eyebrow look for it to be more realistic, because I'm pretty sure unless Jean went eyebrow-less, she probably always drew them on. :)

  • @babyjane85388 yeah, looking at photos, the eyebrows are confusingly wrong. haha

  • how the hell do oyu get the glue out of your eyebrows??? and would this work on stage? im looking for stage makeup tutorials, and this is the closest ive come.. its awesome btw

  • @dbreez5 Thanks, this is actually an ideal look for stage and I'm flattered that some of the cast of 'Throughly Modern Millie' on Broadway have used this video to apply their makeup! The glue comes out very easily. It is 'washable' glue after all, from ELmer's, so soap and water will take it out. Cold cream works well too. :)

  • Loved it!~ Great transoformation.. classic .. Misty Looked fabulously dangerous and classy at the same time.... ;)

  • wow i like it, it's very authentic. i don't why people think it looks drag...

  • @misterfreehugs LOL...because it DOES! That's the point...when Jean Harlow performed in films, she wore her makeup very draggish, only it wasnt 'draggish' back then...it was theatrical. Drag Queens today are known for applying this type of thin brow and pursed mouth. Therefore, people who have no understanding of 30's cinema, automatically equate the look w/ drag queens. :) And thanks, by the way,, for the compliment.

  • @CFELLLOWS- You clearly missed the point of the tutorial which was to replicate the style of not just Jean Harlow- but the 1930's look. Those exaggerated pencil thin brows define that era. Since they filmed in black and white then, any lipstick color would work as long as it was dark enough. Maybe you should look at pics of Jean sans make up and you will see how wholesome she looks next to her Hollywood Bombshell image. Hollywood was about illusion-and so was the make up!

  • @THEGRINNINGDOGGY thank you. Yes...this is not the way Jean looked offscreen. I am personally not a fan of this look myself but I do think that , especially in black and white, it is authentic.

  • @THEGRINNINGDOGGY My relative was a makeup artist back then, and you are right. She would apply makeup for headstill shots. The photographers were absolutely adamant about the effect and how the makeup should look to create what they needed on film and in photography.

  • @Saffron49 Thank YOU. :) I read a lot about this look before re-creating it and purposely flipped the camera to black and white to show how much more believeable it looked when not in color. We can only imagine how crazy all of these ladies looked while they were filming! ;-)

  • why didnt you use her natural brows? they would have looked much better imo. and the shade of lipstick & too much eyeshadow is all wrong.. you made a gorgeous girl (your firned) look horrible & harlow didnt look like a drag queen as you have created here, sorry!

  • @cfelllows this was not meant to be a wearable look...it is meant to be a re-creation of Jean's theatrical makeup that she wore in many of her films. The general appearance of the 30's starlet on film was a bit extreme, as lots of Harlow's head shots will show. That said, I absolutely understand that many ladies like to do a softer interpretation of her look for every-day wear and I will be happy to demonstrate that someday. I'm just happy that most people seem to be enjoying this tutorial.

  • wow she looked great. I love Jean Harolw. You did really good.

  • well, I wouldn't do my eyebrows like that...too clowny. Yeah that's drag queen but Jean harlow didn't always have her eyebrows like that...Look at some of the pics.

  • @2emeraldeyes true...but it is a look associated w/ her style, and she did have her eyebrows like this in many of her films.

  • Cute, cute, cute! I am a big Jean Harlow fan so it was really fun watching this video! Thanks!

  • wow!!! magnificent!

  • loved this! is that how they did the lips and brows? lol my mother used to pluck ... was only a few hairs left.... the rest pencil... thanks so much for sharing... yes she looked very much the part at the end! all she need now is the satin hourglass dress effect ;)

  • @pahoboye Thanks so much!

  • thanks, that was so much fun to watch, I am a HUGE Jean Harlow fan, you did such a great job.......by the way is you name from "Rear Window" ????

  • I happen to think Jean Harlow looked like a drag queen as well...:) Just because I re-create the look, doesnt mean that I would wear it.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

She didn`t look like a drag queen!! No Way not imo

  • My comment was in response to some accusations of 'drag queen' makeup in these comments. In actuality, Drag Queens today base many of their looks solidly in the 30's. So it wasnt meant as an affront to Jean herself. :) But if you wore this makeup out today, you'd likely get that response.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

    LOL OK : )

  • No problem!! and you video was nice i like it

  • @LisaFreemontStreet that's stupid. No matter what, a man cannot pass as a woman. And when drag queens emulate women they still look masculine. I wear this style often and of course I don't get 'drag queen" response. I'm all woman and there is no doubt about it, esp. from men. What an ignorant comment.

  • This is unrelated, but if you don't you should make a video describign your haircut and how you get it done and so forth, as your hair is super pretty.

  • Me or the model, Misty? :) Her hair is great...she'll be a model again coming up this week. :)

  • @LisaFreemontStreet I was referring to you , Ashley. Misty has good hair, but that is just high maintenance. You have the girl next door (from 1954) kind of look, vintage suits you very well.

  • the eyebrows should be lower and less arched for this beautiful model

  • Thanks! I was mimicking the photo of Jean Harlow and personally, I think her's were horribly unflattering. For authenticity's sake, I did the brows very high and unnatural. But I would never style Misty this way, on my own. :)

  • great,I warship Jean

  • she turned out amazing! you picked the perfect model for this look!

  • Thanks so much!

  • I'm so excited about this tutorial! My film professor last semester said I looked so much like Jean Harlow, I can't wait to try out this makeup and see if there's something to what he said. Thank you! <3

  • The best 1930's make up tutorial I've seen so far! The final result - along with the hair - was superb!

  • Dang Lisa, you got skills! Love Love Love it.

  • Wow! all your videos are amazing! I have short hair so I tried this one out this morning and it came out amazing 1st try ever setting my hair!!! Thanks so much!!!!

  • Once you 'understand' your hair and how it reacts to difference sets, you will be amazed and what you can accomplish. So just keep telling that hair who's boss! And thank YOU, for all your sweet words.

  • WoW,,what a transformation,,You did an awesome job.

  • thanks!!

  • track name, please!!!!

  • I always provide an annotation...please watch again. The song title will usually be in the form of an annotation around the beginning of the song.

  • PERFECT..... GREAT JOB!!!!!

  • Bravo! I had a housewarming party and went as Jean Harlow, complete with gold lame gown.....but my makeup job wasn't as good as this! Thanks.

  • could u do an audrey hepburn (sabrina or roman holiday) look? i would really appreciate it thank you sooo much :)

  • This series is actually completed but I am planning to do an Audrey Hepburn inspired look in my new series. If I remember correctly, her hair is 'pixie' short in those two movies you mentioned though, isnt it??

  • ya im pretty sure.. i want to cut my hair like hers but i want to know how she does her hair before i actually cut it :)

  • I understand but w/out a short head of hair to work with, it would be diffiult for me to show you. :) You might show some photos to your stylist. :)

  • ya that was my second option :) well thanks for replying so fast, really appreciate it :) i love your videos btw :)

  • Pretty! i was wondering if you could do a video on Angelina Jolie's look in the movie Changeling?

her hair looks a bit similar to this one but the curls on the side look different, more wavy?

    :D great vids

    -10tl

  • shoot me a photo and I'll look into it. They were probably pincurl waves, which is what Jean actually had in these photos but which were too time consuming for the tutorial. :)

  • simply great..she looked stunning just in case she still would like to know :D

  • omg i always wondered how to conceal my brows to draw thin ones on!! thats a great trick!!!! thank you SO much! yay! does it have to be glue stick or can it be the one from the bottle?

  • It needs to be the stick...:) But it's super easy...

  • Wonderful, congrats to you both you pull it out! She really does look like Jean Harlow.

  • I ADORE THIS, but is it really safe to put elmer's glue on your eyebrows? Does it come off easily?? I've wanted to do eyebrows so badly, but I could never find any of the professional stuff to cover them up!

  • Hey, if it's safe for your kids to eat....heh heh. Seriously, it comes of w/ one swipe of a warm wet rag. Easy peasy.....

  • You did a great job! love this cute little mouth <3!!!

  • I like this video but how do you do the Jean Harlow waves? Your friend's hair doesn't have the deep waves that Jean Harlow does.

  • You have to understand that , in -re-creating these looks, I am limited. I'm limited by hair cut, hair texture, face shape etc. Jean Harlow had short hair with lots of layers. Since Misty does not, I had to work with what I had. If you wanted to achieve the look exactly, you will have to cut your hair into a layered bob and apply fingerwaving and a wet set of pincurls. We didnt have time for that this time. :) Thanks!

  • Hi! I don't know the elmer glue because i don't live in the usa, what kind of glue is this?

  • This is just a washable stick glue that children use in school. It dries clear. I'm sure they have something similar where you live. :)

  • Yes, I think it's like our Vinavil...it's a great idea to cover the eyebrows!

  • I love this! Your vids are awesome

  • Thanks!

  • she looks really good without eyebrows i am serious. She should shave them off

  • genial!

  • May I ask which palette you have? I know you said in one of your vids but I can't find it. I need a good, all-color beginner's palette if you can recommend one!

  • I have the Coastal Scents 78 palette. It is a really good quality palette and is about 20.00

If you live outside of the US, the same palette can be purchased on ebay for a little less but I don't suggest that if you live in the US because the palettes come from China and the shipping takes forever. :)

  • Absolutely wonderful video. Misty you were great & kind of look like Miss Harlow as well. I really liked the music. Keep up the good work.

  • fun !!

  • What a great model to use this tut on! Well done ;)

  • ...I´ve done the Gil Elvgren (my favorite EVER) tutorial yesterday - that was fun and easy and I was only able to do that thanks to you.

You rock, girl. Thank you so very much.

  • Thanks for showing how to do the eyebrows! 5 STARS!!

  • She looks awesome! Both the hair and makeup look so good on her.

  • How wonderful! Misty is absolutely lovely...please let her know. You did a great job. I agree about Harlow...I have never really cared for her. The only movie of hers I ever cared for was one she made with William Powell (her lover) and dogged if I can't think of the title. Had Rosalind Russell in it as well. GRRR....have to chcek out IMDB. Liked for Russell and Powell, Harlow's part could have been played by anyone, IMO. I always preferred Carole Lombard when it came to blondes.

  • She's reading your comments. I think she is pleased. :)

I liked Platinum Blonde somewhat...witty dialogue and all. I think Jean had a short neck and a boyish figure, which didnt seem in keeping w/ the fact that she was supposed to be a sex symbol. But oh yes, Carole Lombard I LOVE> I was watching My Man Godfrey just last week. :)

  • My Man Godfrey is one of my all time favorites. And yes, I have to agree about Harlow's physical structure. Her personal exploits I have always found more interesting than her movies, LOL...BTW the movie I was referring to was called "Reckless" from 1935. It is worth watching, as I said, for powell and Russell. They were astounding for their talent. Russell wasn't a "diva" but boy could she act...

  • WOW.... she pulls that look off well :) Looked alot like her... great job!

  • Yay for bonus episodes! Love it! Keep up the good work darlin'!!!

  • Super :)

  • LOL!

  • They certainly did! Isnt that funny?

  • im loving the starlet series keep up the amazing work !!!!!! :)

  • 5 star for misty..

  • kind of dont like the brow thing (but neither in the original pictures), they seem just in a wrong shape. but the rest of the makeup is really pretty! almost goth, haha!

  • Right...it's not a flattering shape for brows but it was popular in the 30's. :)

  • Misty you were stunning before but after...wow. Bombshell! Love the look.

  • I loved this! Misty should do her hair like that everyday, it looked amazing. However, the make-up may be a little dramatic for everyday wear. Thank you for the bonus video, and thank Misty for being such a good model!

  • Misty has the perfect baby face to pull off Harlow's blonde bombshell look. Makes me miss my bleached locks. Thank you for posting this. For a gal with a similar face shape to Jean, it is sometimes hard to find a look that flatters a rounder face. I hope Misty went out on the town with her drop dead gorgeous makeover.

  • I think she felt too 'dragaliscious' for that! But, she did take the eyebrows off and do her own a little darker shade but kept the rest. She looked gorgeous!

  • I don't know why i'm unable to comment! Sigh.

  • You aren't. :) It's a pending approval thing.

  • Jean Harlow isn't my favourite diva, but i love this look on Misty! Gorgeous tutorial as usually.

  • Mine either. I was not going to do this because I've always been a little repelled by her. But I like her more now that I've done some research. :) Her movies are universally mediocre.

  • So nice! Last photo is the best!

  • Awesome job and your friend Misty was the perfect model for this look. :)

  • Fabulous!

  • Awesome job and your friend Misty was the perfect model for this tutorial. :)

  • The two of you are adorable and Misty looks very much like Jean.

  • Thank you so much! It looks so good especially in black and white!

  • Well she gets 5 stars for just being a Misty!!!...YAY for the Misty's of the world.Great tut dollface!!!

  • Great. I love it!

  • She's GORGEOUS!! Love this look on her!

  • yay!!i loved this!what a great job!

i cant wait for the next video! :D :D

  • I know Misty appreciates all your sweet comments! Thanks ya'll!

  • You look wonderful Misty. Thank you.

  • I even see some similar features between Jean and Misty! Love the song I Dont Dance! Its many guys motto ; )

  • Amazing!

  • Gorgeous as always! Any tips for curls that don't stay at all? :)

  • Try pin curls! THey do stay much better than most curls. Wet pin curls (damp, not wet) and sponge roller sets also have great staying power. And try a setting lotion like Lottabody setting lotion at Sallys.

  • Thanks so much!!! I went out and bought a sponger roller set and it worked! :) Thanks again!

  • Oh gosh, you did a great job on her makeup!!!!

  • Great modeling, Misty! :)

  • That looks SO weird when you take away her eyebrows haha. Good job though :)

  • I know...she was like, "I know never to shave my eyebrows now!"

  • You did an amazing job, Harlow is one of my all time favorite actresses! Thanks a million doll

  • Amazing!

  • wow, this look was so good. She looks beautiful as a "Jean Harlow." ;)

  • Move to Canada!, i would love to have a girls night with you.....

  • aww! she looks so amazing! i love the glue thing haha! that's really neat!

can't wait for the next ones!

  • i just love it =)

SHE DIFINANTLY LOOKS LIKE THE BABY OF HOLLYWOOD!!!!

  • amazing =)

  • This looks amazing, yet again. You've really outdone yourself! :)

  • Great as always! And congrats to Misty!!!

Wish I could be your neighbour for a makeup tut!

Waiting for the Theda Bara tut!

  • You did an amazing job!

  • Thank You!!!!!!!!!! I love Jean Harlow

  • This was awesome!

    She's pretty! =]

  • OooO Jean Harlow love her too she died so young :(

Great job on this one too ! You're really good at vintage looks !

  • I know...only 26! So sad. :( Thanks for your compliments. :)

  • she looks loooooovely!!!!!! you nailed this look completly!!!!!!

    5 stars!!!!!

  • Wow, you did an awesome job, dead on Jean Harlow!!

  • Misty looks soo amazing! And you gotta love Harlow's brows. I was reading a Bette Davis biography and she mentioned the studios made them pluck their brows off and draw them on, which I'm sure Jean was a victim of as well.

  • @goldiestarling I just finished reading Lucille Ball biography and she also said that they shaved her eyebrows off for a show she did and they never grew back so that is why she had do draw hers on all the time. I think it must have been a thing the production companies made them do

  • yeah, she looks great! I don't know if I could pull off the makeup, but I can defiantly do the hair!

  • I couldnt pull off that makeup either! LOL

  • WOOO love love love it. I am going to use that dry pin curls technique.

  • Yeah, Jean's curls were probably achieved w/ a wet set (you can see the texture) but when you're doing someone else's hair, you often times don't have the luxury of waiting for them to dry. :) I discovered this technique on America's Next Top Model. haha.

  • Jean Harlow is one of my FAVORITES!!

Your tutorials are so great, i wish you could do my hair. lol :)

  • Just absolutely gorgeous!! Love this series and Misty is the perfect Harlow:) Can't wait to see more! Thanks so much for posting.

  • Whoa she looks amazing! you did a great job!

  • looks good on her...........
