Steve God...sorry Gadd! well he surely has a place in drum heaven. His grooves has been copied and studied by every single human being that had aspire to hold a pair of drumsticks (including myself) and play those notes with some degree of proficiency (I am very glad that I hold a college title indeed). One of the most recorded drummers ever, even Buddy Rich in one interview, commented once that he liked that kid from New York (referring to Steve). My personal master only in videos of course.
honour your famiry and go and do your piano practice lang chao. you will be a great prodidgy one day. who knows- you might even be good enough to play with steve gadd.
i love that he just starts off playing open handed and then is like " i think this could use some ride action.. oh what's that, ride cymbal's to my right??.. no big." they just don't make pants with big enough pockets to be worthy of steve gadd, do they
mowambo says when a performance reaches this magnitude of excellence it surpasses the ability of the human language to adequately describe its magnificence
If you like this (as I do), I recommend that you listen to the album "Three Quartets" by Chick Corea : same rhythm section, Chick on the piano, and with the amazing Michael Brecker on the sax... amazing!
How would you guys compare Gadd to Steve Smith or to Dave Weckle ...I would like comments based on differences in approach...I do not want to hear who you think is better 'cause that makes no difference at their level...music is art and not a competition...thx in advance...ciao
Weckl plays too many notes and distracts from the groove of the music. Gadd is all groove and has great feel. When Gadd busts loose it is at just the right moment and fits the groove perfectly.
I disagree with the guy who says weckl plays too many notes .... its not like weckl is a 13 year old who is overplaying ...but back to your original question ... Gadd to me was the original bridge between jazz drumming and pop drumming ... his approach was and is accessible to even the most ignorant ears .... Weckl`s approach , at least
early on , was about accuracy and precision .. that is not to say the music was secondary to him .. more that his accuracy created the " fire " in the music
Steve Smith takes a decidedly traditional approach to jazz drumming .. there is no mistaking his influences ..particularly Max Roach ... Steve`s timekeeping is based on his ride cymbal and his swing is old school dotted 8th / 16th note swing as opposed to triplet based swing .. he also has a warm sound , a wash of sound if you will ... very reverby and resonant ... check out the first vital information record ... he rides on his china a lot on that record

@santafejboy2 Listen to Chick Corea's "Light Years" album where Weckl plays the drums. He's capable of simple stuff too.
