One thing i'd be careful of, especially in the beginning of the cadenza with the 2 runs going up to the B natural then Bb, on the last note of those runs, you decrescendo a bit which i find very nice but I notice that as your volume decreases your pitch increases a little. The first time it's VERY noticeable so keep an ear out that the pitch doesn't get too high
the rhythm of this cadenza has no feel to it.... I know it is a cadenza and free to interpretation but listen to the greats perform this piece and you will see that there is a specific feel to the groups of notes that produce a recognizable melody, your performance sounded like a bunch of random notes and intervals. speeding up and slowing phrases down will help shed light on the melody of the cadenza that was meant to be heard
I will say you did a good job but if I could give some constructive criticism.. it sounds like you have too much of a gnarly jazz sound in your mind when you play this piece. To help you center your tone for a more classical, pure sound I would suggest listening to some classical professionals such as philip smith or sergei nakariakov. Good job and good luck!
I think you put to much accenting and you had a tough time slurring from E to G in the E-G-F-E-G-F etc run, you would accent the G and it would sound like tonguing.
I think it sounded good. Some of the commenters don't seem to realize that your tone is altered by the low quality (no offense to you) mic. It's obviously not meant for anything else but for chatting into. Notice I didn't say singing.
your playing is very hard and bright, the "mood" of this song is a much darker and deep, you should try and transfer the interpretation you play, which is good, into the sound of your playing
Reminds me of the joke: How many trumpet players does it take to change a light bulb? 5-one to do it and 4 others to stand around and brag about how much better they could do it!
it all sounds okay for the mic you're using. The only thing I would recommend is using more dynamic contrast along with rhythmic contrast. Make the scherzandos even faster, as well as the opening runs. Right now everything is kind of stagnant. Slow down the parts following the shcerzando and play them quieter, that will add some more contrast.
The idea of a mouthpiece is to help the front end, not to give range. Why would your teacher want to use a mouthpiece that sounded bad? A 14A4A is a Shilke piece and its very common actually.
though ur trumpet IS a yamaha, it looks alot like a bach strad cuz of the design on the bell. i cant really see it clearly anyway so i assumed it was a strad. btw, i have a qs. is a megatone mouthpiece tough to use? im planning on buying one cuz ive been using this schilke mouthpiece for 4 yrs. so does it make it easier of tougher to play?? i wanna pitch my high notes and produce a rounder sound. how do i do it??
does the diference in mouthpieces change anything? ive been playing trumpet for 4 years. i heard that a mouthpiece can change ur range on the trumpet? is that true? i got a yamaha trumpet. so far my range is the low f# - high high d flat. the one above the staff. i had to play it in pirates of the carribean. so dam hard. especially since im only in middle school.
Yes and no. If the mouthpiece is much too large or much too small, it will make a significant difference, but usually range just comes with practice and good use of air (take a BIG breath before you play, but stay relaxed). The mouthpiece will mostly affect the sound quality, not how high or low you can actually play.
actually a mouth piece can change ur range its not a common one but ive been playing trumpet for nearly 7 years i use a 2c but my director has a mouth piece that u can go extremely high on but it spreads ur tone horrible its called a 14A4A .
I have been wanting to hear a good interpretation of this piece for months and finally I found one! Very nice I love it. bach strad? can't tell but it looks like it.
bandxgeek, glad you like it -- thanks. It's a Yamaha 9335 NY trumpet. tko333, I've haven't heard Nakariakov play the Arutunian, so he must have copied me LOL! :)
There are a number of different ways and I really couldn't tell you what I personally do, except that I don't do it with my fingers moving back and forth over the valves (a la Doc Severinson).
wow...that was quick. Don't worry, i won't steal your technique (as i don't even play trumpet). alternating between valves seems inconveniant. Is your way a special way that you created?
Ha ha. What I meant was that I don't know how I do it. My best guess is that it's a loosening and tightening of the lip muscles, but that's just a guess.

Hah, excellent! I love how you emulated Dokschitzer's insane vibrato too. My teacher is a huge fan of him. Good stuff :)

I thought it was a Bach as well. I had a Yamaha years ago and my brother has it with him in Germany now.

How do you do vibrato on a trumpet? Use your tongue, teeth, throat, lips?

You can do vibrato in 3 ways -
Shaking the trumpet (rocking your fingers on the valves)
Moving your lower jaw up and down
Altering the flow of air by shaking your diaphragm
