Sonic dies because it was a giant factor in SA and SA2 and every game since then.
The 2D games were the only Sonic games that had legit underwater parts to them until Sonic Colors. Then, it was open season. Part of the reason you die in this level is because the original had the same standard. And honestly? Who cares? It doesn't detract from gameplay, and death by water was a natural assumption of the level anyway, because it came from a game that had the same standard.
@TechnoJon96 I've played almost every Sonic game, including all the classics! I love all of them and I still play them! SA2 is awesome, but I can't really play. I triend an emulator, but it isn't as enjoyable... I don't consider Sonic Heroes the best Sonic game, I just like it, and I'm sure that's not your problem.

@TechnoJon96 Uh...no. You have your opinions on what you like to play, sure, but from a technical, objective standpoint, heroes is far better made than some of the other games. It wasn't nearly as glitch-tastic as Sonic 06 or Sonic Adventure. I can understand why people wouldn't like Heroes, but there are definitely worse Sonic games out there.

@thessbmaster Nonono, from a technical standpoint, the capabilities of technology at that time render it a terrible game. When you continuously get stuck in walls in the first level, and scripted action bugs make it nearly impossible to not die in the third and fourth levels... a perfect setup for Sonic 06. If you look at older games, you'll find the capabilities of the systems were the causes for bugs, *not* the lack of good development.

The reasoning is Sonic cannot swim. The parts where he touches water and dies is where the water is too deep for him to make it back up. And Sonic can't really BREATHE underwater... that's why they have air-bubbles for him under there.
That's probably because those "water" you're talking about are actually bottomless pits disguised as water -- and apart from the fact that bottomless pits being among the most annoying features of Sonic games, water-based bottomless pits have been around since Sonic Adventure, 'ya know. ;)
EMERALD COAST was good in sonic adventure and in DX and its still good in this game so eff off SS jk but it is a good stage and sonic dies when he touches water because HE CANT SWIM!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANY SONIC FAN KNOWS THAT COME ON
I must say, im quite dissapointed with "sonic generations." The fact that it's all "classic" to "modern" doesn't matter because in both acts you are playing in 2D, meaning how you move. Besides that the only difference is all the new gimmicks and that you run faster and the whole boost meter thing. The boost meter just makes it too easy because you just "go" and you tear right through everything. Sonic is becoming a crash and burn situation. Go Samus instead!!!

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Obviously nostalgia. Wish I would've grew up with Mega Collection.... and Wind Waker, and Metroid Prime, and Pikmin, and Tales of Symphonia but I didn't and now I must play them.
What is so special about this stage anyway? Really. Is it just sentimentality in that it's from SA? That shouldn't make THIS version of the stage any better just because of that. It should be good in and of its own right.
But that's just my fairly-unbiased opinion I have from never playing a Sonic game. (six days until I finally get Generations, though)
My guess why People like this stage is that it is from the first Sonic Game in 3D environment It is from Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast later released for other consoles aswell. It is funny how Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 are still one of the best 3D environment games later games were lets say not so good unfortunatly.
I'm considering picking up this game and I wanted to know two things about it: Does the 3D effect look good/add to the experience of this game and does the 3D cause slower framerates/slow-down?
Well in sonic adventure sonic wa snever able to walk or run on water cause he never had boost so if you went in water you would fall and die well if it was dark pits then yes.
My favorite Sonic game is Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which is also my favorite game of all time. BTW, Sonic was never able to breath underwater(well, except for Labyrinth Zone Act 3 in Aonic 1 for the Game Gear/Master System).
Emerald coast is like yhat cuz it was not classic format! there were mo.segments where underwater was someyhing you could do in the original stage. There is your explaination.
Jumping to get the spheres does affect your time, since you can't boost while in midair. Also, try to avoid the first set of trampolines, they slow you down too. As for my favorite Sonic game, Sonic Chronicles. I love RPG's and also how you can choose what to say to characters and how that affects your relationship with them.
Last year at my High School, the 2 morning announcers always had this awsome catchphrase. "That's the way the Totem Rumbles!!" I loved it, but everyone else hated it. :(
Or, it could be the music. Which I nostalgically love (though I don't own the 3DS version).
As for the ocean-killing-Sonic thing, I think it's because you're basically falling through a deep ocean or sea, which Sonic ain't trained to swim out of. In the original game, they're considered the "bottomless pits" of the stage. XD
A lot of people pick this stage because it is basically the very first stage of Sonic Adventure, the very first (and successful) 3D Sonic in the franchise. In the original game, Sonic goes through this level to check on Tails after crash-landing with his new Chaos Emerald-powered plane, where Sonic gets his first Emerald from. Then after all that, you unlock Tails as a playable character. Yup, I remember this very well. Absolutely one of the most memorable stages in Sonic Adventure. :D

I like how they picked "Crisis City", though. That stage used to be my own reminder of how horrible Sonic '06 turned out to be. And now, Generations' Crisis City is my reminder that SEGA is finally going the right direction this time. (And how I wished Sonic '06 could be remade with the "Hedgehog Engine". LOL.) :D

Emerald coast is like yhat cuz it was not classic format! there were mo.segments where underwater was someyhing you could do in the original stage. There is your explaination.

Jumping to get the spheres does affect your time, since you can't boost while in midair. Also, try to avoid the first set of trampolines, they slow you down too. As for my favorite Sonic game, Sonic Chronicles. I love RPG's and also how you can choose what to say to characters and how that affects your relationship with them.

Or, it could be the music. Which I nostalgically love (though I don't own the 3DS version).
As for the ocean-killing-Sonic thing, I think it's because you're basically falling through a deep ocean or sea, which Sonic ain't trained to swim out of. In the original game, they're considered the "bottomless pits" of the stage. XD

A lot of people pick this stage because it is basically the very first stage of Sonic Adventure, the very first (and successful) 3D Sonic in the franchise. In the original game, Sonic goes through this level to check on Tails after crash-landing with his new Chaos Emerald-powered plane, where Sonic gets his first Emerald from. Then after all that, you unlock Tails as a playable character. Yup, I remember this very well. Absolutely one of the most memorable stages in Sonic Adventure. :D

@daangelo29 yeah it was a tie between speed highway and emerald coast ot be in the Hd version.but Sega had trouble picking levels for Sonic 06 and sa2... Fans chosen, Kingdom valley, tropical jungle and Crisis city

I like how they picked "Crisis City", though. That stage used to be my own reminder of how horrible Sonic '06 turned out to be. And now, Generations' Crisis City is my reminder that SEGA is finally going the right direction this time. (And how I wished Sonic '06 could be remade with the "Hedgehog Engine". LOL.) :D
