The english kids came up with fashion trends and being called "punk" which means being gay in prison. The music started in DETROIT by the Mc5, the Stooges and Death then was refined by the Ramones who took it to England.i'm not knocking the english bands but credit deserves to go where credit is due.

The english kids came up with fashion trends and being called "punk" which means being gay in prison. The music started in DETROIT by the Mc5, the Stooges and Death then was refined by the Ramones who took it to England.i'm not knocking the english bands but credit deserves to go where credit is due.

@danobaka Actually, NYC bands like Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The MC5, The New York Dolls, Televison, and The Ramones, to name a few, were already deemed as punk (rock) by american music critics/media before that style of music existed in England. As a result of these bands touring in England, a punk scene emerged along with a growing punk fashion. Then came The Sex Pistols. The rest is history.

@danobaka umm have you heard of the ramones, the theoretical girls, teenage jesus and the jerks, and the dead boys from New York? They were actually formed a year before the sex pistols. I think both new york and England, and the constant travel of the people between the two places really formed the scene in general.

I just signed up to this to say one thing - Punk rock really started in the UK ! for fucks sake .....not with standing the pre coursers iggy and the stooges.
The Dead Kennedy's were fantastic and Richard Hell was part of the the avant guard but without the pistols, the damned and the Clash and bands like x ray spex there would have not been any real "punk rock" scene.

@kulang90 Well I agree with you punk def had a more IMMEDIATE impact on the UK, but I still believe punk had just as big an initial impact on cities like LA NYC Boston parts of Ohio Detriot Philly etc, the thing is like I said before. America is ALOT bigger than England it took longer for punk to spread. I believe punk had just as big an impact on the US, but its impact was more slow and steady in terms of gaining a foothold in the heartland which it inevitability ended up accomplishing.
