That sounds about right. (gee, I was there but I can't put an exact date to it). Frank did fly the old SKY 5 until the station purchased an updated D model complete with new graphic look. I believe the E model was still under the FAA designation of experimental, so they stayed with the D. The main difference in exterior was the E's pointed nose.
I would take a stab in the dark and say that this was sometime in mid-or-late 1984, concurrent with the change in the station logo. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
I grew up with the circle 5 logo, and I'll always show my love for WRAL, even though I live in NV.
