oh my!!! now i wish i had NEVER EVER let the barber cut my hair TTTT^TTTTT......DEBUT, i WILL have my debut w/ this hairstyle... and wedding(XXXDDD i'm only going to be 13 XD) OH GOD PLEAAAASE LET MY HAIR GROW FASTER-- BUT NOT DRYER OF COURSE.... TTTT___TTTT
I want to do this so badly but I'll probably either get bored or frustrated halfway through lol, I love braids, especially small braids, but my hair is wicked thin so they are hard to make and rarely look good :/ I'll probably try this but figure out a way to make it a little less time consuming
Thanks for showing us the process you go through to figure out a new hairstyle. I bet this one would look good with the braids wrapped across the top of your head instead of the super slidey ribbon. You could pin them on the sides and hide the pins with the swoopy hair bits from the front. And then wrap the pony tail with another strand of pearls.
Would this be appropriate for a wedding guest? My godfather/uncle is getting wed in Cape Town, in April its an evening do, full formal dress etc. Is this too much you think? (im 19 if that makes a difference)
@DaughterxOFxDarkness For me, formal dress = formal hairstyle. I recommend trying it out, then putting your dress on and seeing how it looks together. IF it's not quite what you want, you can either futz with it a bit until you like it, or check out some of my bridal/prom do's...I have lots!
@torrinpaige Thanks for the advice, I will try with the dress. TBH I think I'll snoop through the prom updos even if i do like the effect lol. Thank you. :)
To make the pearls show, consider using the string itself as a strand. Do not separate into 3 strands and braid; rather, separate into 2 and use the plastic pearls as your third strand (with no hair underneath it). It will have no choice but to be apparent. Why don't you have an accent? I went to college in Virginia and local people had a decidedly southern sound. You OWE it to the grocery store ladies (or post office, etc.) to show them your classical version. It would make their day!
@GingerAyell I don't have a southern accent because I was born and raised in West Virgina - the northern panhandle, to be exact, which ends up being north of Pittsburgh, PA. I used to have a bit of a P-Burgh accent, but have lost it. I also learned to say soda instead of pop, ya'll instead of y'uns, yes ma'm & sir, and various other southern things so I could blend in a bit better. :o)
@GingerAyell In my experience, when I try to use a ribbon or whatever as a strand in a braid by itself, it winds up looking funny because the strands aren't the same thickness. It can be a really cool look when I'm going for it, but it just doesn't look the same as an even three-strand.
@allielmackay Yeah, that's how thin my hair is----it works for me just great! But I did go to Jo-Ann's once and bought a thick golden and cream-colored cord (maybe for curtain ties or something?) in my specific length of hair and it's really the answer to that particular dilemma.
As a longtime Torrin fan, and a student getting my Masters in Art History (Medieval and a little Renaissance) - I especially love this! Thank you, as always!
This went into my favourites. Love it! :) All of my hair would go into one of your accent braids but I bet I could pull this off if I wrap a bunch of extensions around the pre-sockbun ponytail. Now my boyfriend better take me on a fancy date soon or I'm wearing this to uni, haha xD
The reason why the took.front pieces and loosely pulled them back was to purposesly cover their ears. That style stayed in fashion in most countries into the 1900 s because it was considered inapprpriate to show your ears. But I love the look. It'd beautiful but definitely the renaissance look
I wore my hair like this today and got tons of compliments! Does anybody else have trouble with the criss-crossed ribbon sliding down their ponytail? It stays in at first, but after a couple of hours the criss-crosses will all be at the bottom half of the polytail, and then the top half is all loose and not very attractive.
@CharlotteAnderson3 Mine stayed, but I think that's because I used woven trim instead of silky ribbon - it had a little more grip. Of course, it also gripped a bit when I took it down - I had to go slow to avoid it snagging so much. LOL.
Whent I saw that your vid was 31 minutes long I was like "YEY,Torrin did a long video,so happy^^!" Please, do other long vids:I like your voice, I'd watch your vid just to hear you talking of whatever you wanna talk^^!XoXo
Wonderful tutorial on a classical haistyle. Torrin, have you ever had layers in your hair? My hair is very layered and about BSL, but I'm desperately trying to grow them out because doing so many updo kind of hairstyles is a pain with hair as layered as mine. Do you have tips how to deal with doing updos with layers?
@Amalthea16 Yup I had layers about 5 years ago - the shortest around chin length (my bangs I was growing out) with graduated layers the rest of my length. I HATED them. When my hair was down, it looked great - but I couldn't braid anything (the shred was terrible) and my updo's consisted of a basic cinnabun or a ponytail for two years. It wasn't until my shortest layer was mid back that I could do any updo's without a million pins.
@torrinpaige For braids I actually find that spritzing water on the hair before braiding helps the layers clamp together. It might not be perfect, but it does help a lot. Updos, though, are pretty much a nightmare for very layered hair. Thank you for the tip!
In the original painting she probably was wearing a hair-piece, even Roman women wore hair pieces/full wigs for some styles. And Mr Botticelli probably used a lot of artistic license
this is really cool - please do more of this kind of hair styles.. i agree it is a little too weird to wear out, but it is really beautiful and kinda cool to do...
This is so beautiful! Both versions. I was thinking you could have maybe done a twisted or rope braided those front bits for something a bit more modern. Just a thought when you were re-doing your hair. :) I have to say when I first opened this video and I looked at the time and thought OMG Its so long! Started watching and I was totally engrossed, so much so I was sad when it ended. Thank you for doing this hairstyle, I'm already thinking (coz it looks quite simple) how to do it for my BSL hair
Very cool! The best historic/painting hair style tutorial I've ever seen. Mostly the women & men wore hair pieces all the time & they did have help styling their hair as you said. Keep up the good work.
I saw this on facebook and I think it's so beautiful! I SO didn't recognize that there was a ribbon/strandy thing under her chin in the painting! I thought it looked like a super dark shadow and it did look odd >.> Your hair looks very healthy! :) I enjoy watching you figure things out kind of as you go, it's interesting. More painting/art inspired fancyish styles please! :D I actually like the little flippy things on the side haha. Thanks for all the effort you put into your vids :3
This is probably a silly question but how long should ur hair be to do this? ( I havent watched this whole video so if you said it sometime during it plz ignore my ? ) :)
@Dolphingirl7787 I'm sure it can be adapted for shorter hair than mine - but it's going to end up looking a bit differently, of course. I think, and I'm guessing here, that the modded version is doable around BSL - and the full version should be doable around mid back to waist length.
@torrinpaige Haha! I can't help but to stick with you. Your hair always looks so pretty! I'm one of those weird people who likes to see how things are done. Also, your videos provide inspiration. :D I'm growing out my hair to about wait length. I'm not even BSL, yet, so I've got a whiiile to go. But, your videos keep me motivated. :)
@torrinpaige Thank you so much!! I am a historic re-enactor and I always have trouble finding good hairstyles, so I love it when you post them. And again, many thanks.
Just a note: ribbon of all kinda always slip out of my hair. If you have no issue using spin pins, i normally get the ones that have little gems on top or butterflies or something - and i place 3 to 5 of those over top of the ribbon. They spin through the ribbon and into the hair, its comfy and my ribbon never falls of. And you get some extra sparklies in your hair. Maybe give that a try?
Yikes! I decided that this year I am going to play with one new hairstyle per week and if I'd seen this one yesterday I would have attempted it! However, today my hair is up in the interlaced braids response to Leopsie that I watched yesterday :) I think I will book the Botticelli one in for next week. I've been watching your videos for ages, as I have hair that is just short of hip length and was getting very tired of the same old braid day after day. This is gorgeous and worth a try :)
WOW! I salute you :-) You do have the most beautiful head of hair I have ever seen. I'm with you on the "gull wings". HATE for my hair to be over my ears like that. Makes me feel claustrophobic. I love the modern version and would totally wear that out just for kicks :-)
@eezepeeze I think that's exactly it - it's the being over my ears that bugs me. Which is funny since when it's down it's over my ears, but I think it's just the feeling of it being up and yet touching my ears that drives me bonkers. LOL. Oh, be warned - I had a headache after about 3 hours - it was a bit heavy and all the pins certainly didn't help.
@WitchieBelle Oh, girl, I have an enormous list of requests. I'm trying to get some of them done. LOL. I am positive there are more period styles in there...so you'll have something to look forward to. :o)
@LaDollyVita33 Thanks, Siobhan, that means a lot! And it IS insane. The take-down was a bit ornery, but I am happy to report that the seed pearls slid right out...the ribbony trim was more difficult than the pearls. LOL. I did have a headache after 3 hours, though, so I don't think this will be one I do very often, if at all.
@torrinpaige The seed pearls are definitely my favorite part! Maybe you can save this for super special occasions? It's so gorgeous, I'd wear it even to the supermarket! LOL
