i do adore this song. they play it at the mod dance party at the saturn bar in the bywater/upper ninth ward (new orleans) sometimes. he's definitely saying down the mississippi (river) to new orleans. but he does also say every southern belle is a mississippi queen. it's just a flattering thing to say to a belle, she's a missippi belle, they got the prettiest girls.

I think he's singing "down the Mississippi" i.e. he's referring to the river - not the state - but you're right about one thing - it's a great song... (as is "Quarter to Three")

I never realized what he was singing back then; New Orleans is in Lousiana, not Mississippi. Oh well, still a great song.
