@Derwentcub This is so beautiful I saved it on my playlist , I am trying to reconstruct a list of music that my brother left for me, do you have any Bethoven, Debussy, Chopin?
@Vipzy234 Do you mean this video, or the original recording? Either way, I may be able to help. Mail me derwentcub@hotmail.co.uk If I can help, I will.
@feelingmellow96 I have to confess I am not exactly sure of the location. Obviously it's all the leading Romanovs together, in full regalia. Lavadia Palace at Yalta, or a major site in St Petersburg would both be good bets. I'll do some more research for you.
You have done an amazing thing with this. I have always had an interest in Russia and when I was younger would have loved to visit there. Have a neighbor from St. Peterburg who is now living in the USA. Have seen many pictures of them when they had revisited Russia.
In '93 I went to Krasnoyarsk to visit some long time friends that I had through correspondence. Russia is definitely not a place I'd want to live. Interesting, yes...but not a place of residence.
During the Cold War my father was deeply curious about Russia, and read everything he could find about it, but all we ever heard was Russian Life Magazine propaganda ("everything is wonderful there all the time, tra-la!"), or US Government propaganda ("it's a hell-hole of oppression all the time!"). He would have loved to visit and see for himself, but he never got the chance. This video made me think of him, for which I thank you. (He would have hated the sad shape the world is in now, though.)
@GuinnevereB Thank you for this very positive comment, my friend. Sorry I have only just responded, but 2011 was a terrible year for me, healthwise, and many things were overlooked. I agree 100% with what you have said..
@Derwentcub You replied right away, but if your health was under par at the time I can certainly understand why it would have slipped your mind! And your comment today led me to view the video again, which was very rewarding. (I love that melody, and the pictures are still evocative.) Thank you again for posting it to begin with, and I hope 2012 will be a much better year for you in every way.
This was the piece in the 1980 movie starring Chris Reeve being "Somewhere in Time" that tore a lot of women's hearts open. The Rubinstein/Reiner/CSO recording of this entire RACH piece is the most famous.
They were to show the contrast between the horrors of war and the beautiful music of peace. Russia has suffered some terrible horrors of war, as well as producing some of the greatest music the world has ever known. Therefore, MusicalClassics, the emphasis was on contrast. Thank you for your very valid comment.
this is why i love youtube. you could have a terrible day at work. come home and watch a wonderful post like this.and feel good to just be alive and able to hear and see a soothing post like this.

Thank you blueside14 - Rachmaninov left Russia after the revolution and always had a passion for the old country. This has to be one of the most intensely beautiful moments in the history of music..
Breathtaking music and scenes, much appreciated, thanks for letting me listen

This is surely one of the most beautiful pieces ever written - it's hard to imagine that a human being can reach the heights that this music does.

The music was beautiful, and so were the pictures, but I didn't think the tanks and bombers were really relevant.
