'Next to Normal' - 2009 Tony Awards - Best Original Score

next to normal has one of the best scores a show has ever had - and while Billy Elliot is very good, it has absolutely NOTHING on next to normal.

none of the nominees were in the same league. I mean the musicals are amazing dont get me wrong! But the score in next to normal is so amazing!!!!

i really think this should've gotten best musical.

i mean, just because you get a dude who's super-famous and composed the whole score doesn't mean the musical itself was good. i'm sure it was! but it's certainly not the level next to normal is.

@StaraziaSelin66 Well it won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama which is rare for a musical! In my eyes a Pulitzer Prize for Drama is as good as a Tony for Best Musical if not more so!

@StaraziaSelin66 To be fair, while I was rooting for N2N, BE may seem like a formulac story of a boy's dream but the mass-scale conflict is the strike and the internal conflict is Billy's dreams. In the end, the miners refuse to be the force to steal Billy's rights heed Billy's efforts. When you realize the clash of internal and external conflicts is compelling. I don't think Elton meant to steal the advertising attention, he did compose the score to express the story did a fine job of it.

@david88441 They cut them off with Piragua because Lin Manuel Miranda was presenting the next award, but they should have given them more time though... you have to admit that for the past three years this award was given to composers and lyricist who truly deserved it, Duncan Sheik, Steven Sater, Lina Manuel Miranda, Brian Yorkey, Tom Kitt...MUSICALGASM!
