    Also, he asks only "What good do my values do for others?" One could ask about valuing one's self. Why does your self have no place in his valuing of values?

    I think when we hear this legacy of Christian paradigms, familiar as it is, we may nod solemnly and look down, convinced we are hearing "the Truth." But it is just one simplistic viewpoint (only 7:46 to sum up ethics). The only acknowledgment is the too-brief "By all means defend yourself." ...

  • There are many reasonable alternatives to this view at the end about suffering being part of--and even an indicator of--living the best life. I'm talking about his saying "the finest steel is forged in the fiercest flame." As an alternative, one could think that people, biologically evolved as we are, are conditioned to behave in certain ways. It's not clear to me that suffering for values is what makes our life good, what makes us good people. I mean, for me, that's just too much emphasis...
