There are many reasonable alternatives to this view at the end about suffering being part of--and even an indicator of--living the best life. I'm talking about his saying "the finest steel is forged in the fiercest flame." As an alternative, one could think that people, biologically evolved as we are, are conditioned to behave in certain ways. It's not clear to me that suffering for values is what makes our life good, what makes us good people. I mean, for me, that's just too much emphasis...
