I bought one of these from some rich kid in high school. You can connect a keyboard but it's HARD. I did it, I had to solder every wire myself. I bought a surplus synth keyboard and a case not meant for this project. I ran it through a Realistic electronic reverb which was based on a BBD chip, and also a stomp box chorus.
Wow! Does that take me back! That was my first synth, bought it back in 1981! When the membrane keys started going goofy, I built a hybrid; I gutted a Rheem Kee Bass (search that one) and took the guts of this synth and combined the two devices. It worked great, and was cool to at least have keys to play instead of that membrane stuff! Fast forward to yesterday: a buddy of my kid brother contacted me because he found this hybrid I built in his attic! It'll be cool to play it again after 29 yrs!
I used to have one of these when I was 14. Wow does it bring back memories. I used it to score my Super 8mm horror movies. Don't have the synth anymore unfortunately, but I do have the movies!
These things are fucking great! This is what Eddie Van Halen used for their songs "Sunday Afternoon In The Park" and "One Foot Out The Door" from the 'Fair Warning' album-thanks for posting this!
so true, 13voices. even on it's thinnner filter fart settings, add some sub octave and "boom!" on it's octave/phase on/ less sweep mode w/ cool eq and octave emulations it's fukkin huge! totally seceret weapon material. many experienced players, engineers, etc have asked " what'd ya do to make the chorus get so huge at the end?" or something similar.
I knew somone with one of these the sound was great but the keys were a bitch to play because if you wanted to play somthing the synesizer wouldn't. but other than that its a good unit. comment from colbey howell of VIRAL PROGRAM
Goddamn. I had one of those back in '83 or so. You can hear it on tracks from Van Halen and Prince. Mine gave up the ghost within a year after I purchased it. Cool for the time but expensive now if you can find a used one. I think d.j.s and people doing experimental music will dig it though.
yeah, the keys can be kinda flaky... sometimes the thing just has a mind of its own, getting stuck on certain notes and just sort of playing itself... also i should note that the pitch bend slider was pretty dirty when i made this shitteo, so it's really scratchy, but i've cleaned it up and it works more or less correctly now. it just bends the pitch up an octave.
buy a korg monotron for 50 bucks or 800 dollars for an ebay driven eh mini synth which isnt much better----hmmmmm!

Somebody's trying to get rid of one of these right now (February 4th 2011) on EBAY for $900.
$900 for one of these?
I could get a Juno 60 for about that price.

How much do these things cost ? I would love to get one to jam out but i have a feeling this kind of old skool stuff will set you back quite a bit..

how hard is it to "hack" a keyboard to it? the membrane keyboard is the only problem with mine
inputmodule 2 years ago
Not really useless.. the key is to either midi them or hack a real (fatar) keyboard on them.
The sound of these are great... Im going to be selling a few different types of "mini synth"
PlanetSynth 2 years ago
Um... where do you buy these at? LoL but it looks all complicated @_@

that sounds awesome. do the keys not sound sometimes? or do you have to press them hard? what's up with that? sounds cool though
