All of these books are all the same: to show how bad white people are. Well no, there are many books exactly like thus one, roll of thunder here my cry or the secret life of bees that just try to make white people feel bad about themselves, even if they weren't even born at the time
If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I have to writ a speech on why people should adopt the cunningham code of honour, if anyone could give me any ideas it would be appreciated.
The book in some parts took me a bit to comprehend, especially the end. Its one of the books that means ALOT more than what's simply written which made me like it so much. If you are a "shallow" reader, just try to think deeper and you'll respect its themes like I do
This is an amazing book, I'm 15 and this was just one of those books that made me just relax and do nothing the whole afternoon and review my outlook on life. I would have just used to play video games but this just made me realize how little of the world I've experienced and how empty my life is.
I hate it when the exam boards suddenly decide that a great piece of literature will be 'studied'. Inept teachers ruin the text and make it boring, while all the students grow to loathe what are actually very good books. It was always lost on me why this book should be studied by kids anyway... It's pretty fucking deep as books go.
As to those who say it's boring, go watch some Reality TV - ignorance is bliss after all
@paudiemaguire1 Remember the part when Jem pointed his gun at a bird? Atticus then stopped him & told him it was a sin to kill a mockingbird. The point of this book is exploring human morality. I think that has something to do with the title choice. It's a rather nice title for a book too.
I chose to read this book. No one recommended it to me. I just wanted to read an old timey- American classic. I'm in fifth grade. Thumbs up? Oh come on, at least a high five!!!
@cheniebofinie1 Good for you! Great book. 'Scout' is actually a portrayal of Harper Lee and her life growing up. When you get a little older, look up an author named 'Truman Capote'. He and Harper Lee were best friends growing up and the character of 'Dill' is based on him.
I don't mean to spoil the ending....But when Boo brings Jem in to the house, and Atticus calls for Scout, he asked her what happened. How does Atticus NOT see Boo come in his house...? And then behind the door...?
The booksellers of this book must have a lot of money, because just about every kid in the world is forced to read it at school. But that isn't a problem though because I LOVE the book!
Im trying to read it, but its a bit hard for me to understand :( i realy want to read it , though. But whats the point of reading it , if i dont understand it
Sure it's a good book with a very fantastic moral behind it, but the first 100 pages or so don't seem necessary at all. (especially the first 20-30) It was so boring, but I was compelled to read it because we had to read it for English...
It did get really good and I will admit that it was touching, therefore making it a nice read. However, a book that's sold millions should be more gripping. She's a good author but she just doesn't know how to hook people at the start...
I'm glad I didn't have to read this book for school, reading books for something just makes it drag on. But I read it in my own time and I devoured it in one day, and I just wanted to say to everyone whinging about having to read it that it's a beautiful novel.
@macstjo The book's AMAZING. Give it a chance! There's a reason it lives on. I have to read it for school too. I just hate the fact we have to do all these 'activities' over it. :/
Have to read the book and take notes as a summer assignment and Im going to 7th grade,First day of school, take test over it and then start writing an AP essay over it.DONT GO TO ADVANCED CLASSES!
For my GCSE's i have to read and study the book for my exam in the summer term 2012. so can somebody give me an idea about what the book is about and is it good? becasue so far ive read the first couple of pages and it doesnt interest me. also should i watch the film before reading the book or would you read the book first?
@01Mohini Just finished reading the book a couple of hours ago. It would be the 3rd time that I tried to read it and finally able to finish it. You just have to endure the first coupe of pages. But once you feel you're already part of the book (Lee's one heck of a visual author I tell you) you'll enjoy it. It is one of the very few books I've read that really moved me. Go on and enjoy. :D
I was assigned to read this book for my 8th grade English class and I just finished it today... It was so good!!! The beginning was a tad boring but as you got further into it, it got better and better. This one definitely touched me - it's not easy for me to get touched by a book btw. Read.
@RayWilliamJohansen This movie is one-of-a-kind. But one movie that comes to mind is "Les Miserables" (1970s version). That one is all about doing what is right in spite of the personal cost.
@RayWilliamJohansen 'a time to kill' is quite a good movie..you know quite similar with to kill a mockingbird in terms of the legal issues and the color issues..but i don't think there's anything like 'to kill a mockingbird'..it's amazing in every level and i wonder why people keep debating about gregory's winning an oscar.he deserved it..he sounded and looked similar from what i imagined he would be in the book..but again...u r right..i wish there were movies like this nowadays
Universal Pictures' Greatest Achievements: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) Psycho (1960) Spartacus (1960) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) Jaws (1975) National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) The Deer Hunter (1978) The Blues Brothers (1980) E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982) Back to the Future (1985) Out of Africa (1985) Backdraft (1991) Jurassic Park (1993) Schindler's List (1993) Apollo 13 (1995) The Mummy (1999) A Beautiful Mind (2001) Seabiscuit (2003) Ray (2004) King Kong (2005)
@cinemapsycho91 That's definitely a great list, but don't forget Frankenstein (1931), Dracula (1931), Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Wolf Man (1941), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Phantom of the Opera (1925), Werewolf of London (1933), and Vertigo (1958).
@IDaCashman Those are also amazing movies, but those would come later on the list, and I believe Werewolf of London was released in 1935. Thanks for your feedback.
@IDaCashman No worries. There's no doubt that Universal Pictures are responsible for the first horror/monster movies, but I just think that The Deer Hunter and Out of Africa are more poignant than the films you mentioned.
Although Frankenstein (1910), Nosferatu (1922), and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) came before all those films and are the earliest famous versions of each film. Although, Universal did make a 1913 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Furthermore, though accidentally scary and meant as a comedy, The Devil's Tower (1896) is widely regarded as the first "horror" film.
@IDaCashman Very true. AND let's not forget that Universal is also responsible for the first REALISTIC horror movie with a REALISTIC villain, Psycho (1960).
I have not read the book but I just got through watching this for the first time. This film is incredible. One of the best films I have ever seen. I only wish I had seen it sooner. Better acting in a movie you will not see. I was truly moved by this film. Look i'm a grown man I 've seen and experienced a lot in my my life but this film actually really got to me on an emotional level a true masterpiece.
honestly i dont like reading books because most of them are boring, but now ever since reading like 19 chapters of this book in my english class i started to appreciate literature
Our teacher skipped over the good parts of this movie and the book and just wouldn't shut up she butchered it completely and only word comes to mind about this teacher is asinine!
i loved this book. a little slow in the beginning, but after i got totally hooked and had an emotional attachment to it, i can't wait to watch the movie!
i loved this book... i didn't have to read it... but I had to pick a book for an analysis and i picked this one.... it was so good..
