I like Unity or atleast the idea of it but hate that my drop down menus in my main task bar above. Its too MAC & its one of the most useless features I've ever seen. It was once used back in the day & because Apple didn't know how to change Xerox's original OS look so it stuck & to possibly save on memory, but I don't understand the point to use it now other then to copy what Apple copied from Xerox.. I'm Hoping for an alternative that uses unity but has the classic window menu drop downs.

Gnome 2.3 (or what‘s the current version) was like equal to KDE in terms of features and stuff but the Gnome 3 will just fall with KDE 4 and so will the Unity shell. Then there will be no more advanced desktop than KDE 4.

It's up to you, but as I said I'm not a fan of the "application-centric" thing, and I think a "Gnome Dock" is a very bad idea.

Because people will see your desktop and say: "Wow this is cool! This looks beautiful. Oh, no crash on your computer! What kind of Mac is that? Never saw it before!" and... see what I mean?

Some of you will say "Linux doesn't need to be ugly". I agree with that but it shouldn't imitate Mac OS X (like the buttons on the left of the window title in Ubuntu default theme)

For god sake, Linux is 100% customizable, because

Gnome 2.3 is the only one that "fits me". I am not a fan of Mac OS semi-windows semi-applications centric (I checked the option to not have windows on the other side of the dock), and I HATE how Windows 7 handle that (even if you can use the classic mode, but you loose new colors and the rest)

It's a bad copy of Mac OS X and you loose a lot of time.

Sorry but bottom bar with all windows is THE way

I'm OK if it suits you. Maybe some people like it. And to be honest it's quite a good idea on netbooks or so to have that. But well on netbooks you can't run that much applications at the same time :-/ (it's a shame they don't sell better ones. Only IBM and Apple tried to do it...)

This is horrible I like the idea of hiding some panels like a dock panel on the bottom or a small notification panel on the side somewhere, but there should be a super panel always visible somewhere.

And I only do that cuz I have a netbook if I had a desktop I'd use two super panels.

you can do this video with the current gnome, just put all the taskbars on autohide! expand them and drag programs into it, they will all auto-align right!

Don't get me wrong Riboshom. I don't say Grub2 is incompatible. I say Grub2 is absolutely futile and unnecessary at this point of ubuntu development. People is not being efficient. The results achieved over the energy they spent is very low. Unacceptable.

Nice, but... WHY did they change GRUB, it was since ever running completely stable! As a Linux lover I think it is more than time enough for stabilize this system and let it be used by anyone, without its annoying bugs. But, the fantastic thing is that in each new version there is always someone to decided to introduce new instabilities. Something is fixed, but also something is broken. Could it be too stupid to imagine someone being paid to keep it annoying? Really full of that!!!

When you want to sell a product, you have to be in constant competition with the others!

And the "Others" are going for the style!

GRUB IS NOT made to be stylish it was designed at a time where people didn't cared of those things! GRUB in made to be FUNCTIONAL!!

And the only way to change that was to completely rewrite it from scratches!

Thanks Riboshom. Before your explanation I was only worried. Now I am really decided not to use Karmic, as I already did. And when you talk about selling a product it is obvious that it was the best thing I have done. Too many people and brains and resources focused on "stylish", and blocking Linux by introducing new bugs and breaking old functionalities. Are they expecting people to use the system, then? Yes, lots of people WILL TRY to use the system. But most of them GAVE UP.

You seem to forget that most of the other distribution DON'T use GRUB legacy! They use Grub-gfx instead (it's a mod, BTW) because you can style it!

And don't talk about grub2 like that, without having tried it! There's a database in the Ubuntu's documentation, and barely EVERY laptop and EVERY motherboard supported it!

I use Grub2! I hadn't skinned it yet, so that it looks like shit, but it does what it should do: IT WORKS!!!

Before to say that Grub2 sucks and is incompatible, try it!

just because something is glossy or remotely "pretty" doesnt make is mac os x. linux had the bottom dock wayy before hackintosh did. id bet youd consider vista a mock of os x, which is retarded, for vista isn't close to similar to mac. btw: apple did not have first personal computer w/ gui, like a bunch of mac fanboys believe, XEROX DID. look it up XEROX ALTO.

all that pannels could add more functionality, but doesn't change totaly the current desktop. A idea like Gimmie or mayanna or maybe Zeitgeist are the way to go for a new desktop experience.

All that panels will bother in a moment, specially fot designers or developers.

Anyway, looks cool, but insane.

Hope to see more mockups.
