BlacknWhitesAlright: even if the work doesn't have popular aesthetic value surely it can still "communicate." As a viewer you can't choose the message you want to see. Emin's life and art are intertwined and a beautiful aesthetic would not communicate her message. would it? and obviously aesthetic value is totally subjective.
Tracey Emin does absolutely fucking nothing for me whatsoever. Her work seems like it must be nice and therapeutic for her, which is great, but that does not merit her being famous in any way whatsoever.
Then again, I'm a strange one - I like art to have some sort of actual aesthetic value. You know those people who look at your work? The "viewers?" Yeah, I like my work to communicate to them. Odd thing, that.
Arts about adding something new to the cannon(Artworld). Picasso with the cubes during a time when these delicate romantic paintings were to be expected. That is just one of the many contemporary art pieces, it has a personal concept of past endevours with Tracy, and as artist you can grow from that form of expression. For those of you who don't have an eye for art , and say 'I could have done that'..ask yourself why didn't you.
I think this is unfair because it's treated as though Tracy Emin is individual. As though she has seen something most don't, she hasn't. We've all been down and we've all changed over time. It is not fair that her messy bed is valued any higher than anyone else's messy bed.
its not that shes the only one who has been through hard times, its the way she has chosen to vent about it.
im sure if you had exhibited your messy bed before she did there would have been just as much talk. and i think to appreciate the bed you need to actually see it, and understand exactly why she did it. its not just an unmade bed, it speaks volumes about her relationwhips and alcoholism, and to be fair its really honest.
It's about relationships and alcoholism in the most shallow way possible. What she did should be respected no more than 'oh that's pretty cool' and a five minute perusal of her work. It just doesn't say anything beyond the obvious. I can't just take a bit of life out of context and call it art, there is no skill involved. xXx
haha fair point my friend, I am not particularly for or against Ms Emin, this video was uploaded because it contained our music and I wanted to show some friends over the water.
we will agree to disagree on the matter of Mr Thomson.
i made exactly the same comment on one of stuckstuckstuck's videos about Charles Thomson. Although admitedly a little childish, I felt Mr Thomson had appeared to be smug and self satisfied in a newsnight item and commented as such.
she's no artist
