So I'm 17, and I was looking for hip hop thats different from what I hear on a daily basis, I wanted something that spoke what I thought and felt, and I've finally found it, as soon as I graduate and get this solid education for my mom, I will pursue music in it's purest form #EyesOpened
@JuniorTheRealOne Nice one, Mate. Definitely a Masterpiece at the time too. Will always be. Epic piece of Literature. Penned by a Genius of oratory and delivered with some considerable grace. A great piece of work.
I took to take my son to the rap concerts back in the early 80s .
My son is now in his 30's Mellie Mel is possibly one of the finest rapper's poets the ever lived. If you think, Beat Street was heavy to listen and think about. ( The Message) made you laugh but also make you think and learn and become informed at the same time. con't

Every word as relevant today as it was then. Part of me would like to know why. Beautifully Penned Literature always has that effect. A powerful Piece. A VERY Powerful Piece. When I first heard this, I knew I'd just heard something important and I always feel that way when I hear it. Lyrical Genius!!!
@JohnnyP8one Sometimes it's important to doff your cap at the things so deserving of that kind of Respect. The talent required for such writing seems to be quite lacking these days. It's there, but rare.
hip hop lyrics 1984s: "a newspaper burns in the sand, and the headline says 'man destroys man' "(melle mel)....... hip hop lyrics 2000s: "i got ten bathrooms, i could shit all day...."(lil wayne). wow.
Thankyou for sharing this track, it brings back many memory's of back spinning, body popping general breakdancing etc: I can't believe I still know 97% of the words to that rap? As I tell my kids, "daddy's still got the groove?" lol! Thanks again........
I dont like hip hop but this is awsome. I think that this is the truth. People die for no reason and so soon. This song speaks nothing but the truth. Can you beleive GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five got Rock n' Roll hall of fame. This is the hall of fame that Buddy Holly, Elvis, and other things that made history were in. I truly think that that they belong there...
People keep dissing on modern hip hop and it deserves it! this is art pure and simple. Sigh this is what hip hop once was to bad i wasn't alive at the time!
i though that nwa wus thet bets i still love them and the fat boys and everyotehr good old school rapper but once i heard this i just like realides this is the best song and beat and rap i mean it just so amaizng and the words flow so good

One of the greatest songs ever! I watched Beat Street again for the 1st time in 20+ years and man, i forgot how fun this movie is! Awesome break dancing, great music and a cool/positive message! Now i wish i could find my damn Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 double cd collection so i can rock too it again! I love this song!
his words express the issues we have today. beat street was my movie and we need this type of power to the people ( all people) and a huge wake up call. brb gonna blast this outta my window maybe these assholes outside can get the message.
@poopascoop4eva is written about a movie and this guys friend diead in a train election zap that killed him watch the movie and u will understand it ok. IT called beat street god movie watch
@microsoft637 ya i know but this song is bad ass right i mean im 16 and only lisen to old school rap like this and eazy e i hate lil wyane and f biener am i right ad me as a frien dk

@visionimagify alot of rap fans don't adore today's hip-hop cause it from being an art form with lyricism and a strong message to meanless raps and sucker MC's doing it to make a quick paycheck..... even actors like Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell can come up with better raps than today's current rappers.
I've been trying to find this track from Melle Mel called "The Mayor". I bought an old school hip hop cd from the dollar store and it had alot of old rare hip hop tracks. I really couldn't believe what was on the cd from the dollar store! Unfortunately the cd was stolen ages ago. If anyone has this song, PLEASE let me know, I miss it and it's a bad, bad jam.
I was born in 1986, but I first heard this song from going through my dad's cassette tape collection (My dad liked SOME rap) and I was totally intrigued by this song. This song is the shit!
That beat is straight killer! Even the rapping is ON beat with the music. Can't say that for much of the garbage on the radio nowadays. Just like Ice-t said to the Soulja Dickboi, "That supaman bullshit ain't gonna fly"!
Man, I remember when I was in the 4rd grade back in 1984 when me and all my friends went $2 Tuesdays nights at the local theatre in Mississippi to see this. I was in a break dance group called the Camalot Kids. We would rehearse our moves all week and then we would go to the dance at the Auditiorium on Friday nights and battle just like they did. But it was all about having fun and talking to girls. Not about all the BS that they kids are into now. THE GREATIES 80's. You had to be there.
A 5-Star melody,i love the rap from 80's and i am borned in 95..i played GTA:Vice City and heard all these beauties..i love the 80's,how much i dare to live there :D
yea those were the good ol days when rap music was against, dope, pimps, shootin, and killing. now days every one just, keepin it real. you have to have a rap-sheet in order to get a rap-contract these days. stay outa trouble kid, Thx....
'Beat Street' is definitely one of the finest by Grandmaster Flash. The lyrics are just soaring with thought-provoking questions about our society (and humanity itself). To me, it's moments like this that reinforces the lasting appeal and relevance of Hip-Hop. The 80s may be long gone but the commentary on war & poverty is much alive and (unfortunately) flourishing. Maybe it's cleverly crafted music like this, with real heart and passion, that can bring people together united as one. A+!
To follow-up, I would also like to add that this song is pure poetry from start to finish and deeply philosophical. Whether a fan of hip-hop or not, I think Grandmaster Flash is not needed to be an acuired taste: they are a special flavor guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of the avid/focused music listener. Chuck D (of Public Enemy) noted Grandmaster Flash as a significant influence, and that is clearly visible here (he would eventually take the street commentary to a grittier level).
Yea rap need to get real again. not enough rappers talkin about issues in life, to much bling, rims, dope, guns, gettin high, clubin music. Hip-hop sold out to section 8, their goes the neighborhood:/
this rap got a massave message, they had the guts to tell it like it is... "THERES GOLD IN THE STREETS AND DIAMONDS ON THEY FEET, AND THE CHILDREN IN AFRICA DONT EVEN EAT"?.. FLIES ON THEY FACES THEY LIVIN LIKE MICE AND THE HOUSES EVEN MAKE THE GEATO LOOK NICE, WATER TASTE FUNNY ITS FOR EVER TO SUNNY AND THEY WORK ALL MONTH AND DONT MAKE NO MONEY"!!! thats a cold ass verse in the rap world.. big ups {G.M.
