  • Windows has this its called the start bar...

  • Hmm looks familiar xD Linux have been doing this for ages :D I recall having at least 16 workspaces, and even more :D (I think I could have up to 32 workspaces xD)

  • I just used Spaces to watch this video and to change up my System Preferences

  • im lovin my mac!!!

  • Linux has a 3d cube.

  • First of all, mac did not invent this, its an old tech. No credit should be given to Mac.

Second, Mac spaces makes my classmates stupid. They switches their spaces for no reason throughout classes. Showing off?

Thrid, Linux have having this for ages.

  • I have windows. I don't even need t his because I get this nice bar on the bottom of my screen telling me what I have open and will kindly give me a preview of all minimized windows should I roll over it. The mac does no such thing, necessitating "spaces".

  • Wow so many shiny transitions, that makes me want to buy one!

  • @flsgflsg Macs targeting demographic, people with no brain cells who do not know the meaning of "Money saving" and who are easily distracted by shiny objects and or bright flashing lights.

  • @DemonAMVs don`t be trolled so easily, you know I was being sarcastic rightÉ

  • @flsgflsg You realize I knew you were making a joke and was agreeing with you right? Don't think your trolling when your not.

  • @DemonAMVs well good then, maybe I misunderstood your sentence

  • Macs are for Hipsters. /argument.

  • Windows doesn't need this because the way it manages multiple windows isn't shit.

  • there is no HD

  • LINUX IS BETTER.

  • @TheGreatBunghole16 no OS is better. it's about what's better for YOU.

  • beryl!? what have they done to you!? you've become...proprietary.

  • "Spaces" was integrated into Linux way before Mac OS X had it...

  • @otaclock part 2

"and hum yea tell me how many times your precious windows freezes or gets viruses?"

last time i got a virus was more than 10 years ago. as for windows freezing, i do recall that everytime a program on my friend's mac freezes, it takes everything down w/ it, precious time spent on the project: wasted.

    "pay for antivirus programs"

yup, i pay to use facebook/mypsace/gmail/google/youtube too, $10/month per service.

  • @hellistina

No windows, no mac? - Linux.

  • @otaclock

"can u even use a mac?"

u do realize that it's a major flaw in gui's design if ppl "can't use" mac?

"are sure u want to compare windows and mac on photo or movie program editing?"

i can watch and edit porn on my windows rig just fine, thank you.

  • Most linux distros have had this since the stone age.. it's nothing new.

  • @headasplod3

Yes, all window managers have this option - since the stone age : )

  • Yeah but the Windows version is shit

  • @andygoodyear thier is a windows version

  • The dock is handy as hell. I have mine set up to only show the programs open on that particular desktop, but a left corner gesture shows all windows from all desktops. extremely good for prying eyes when your looking at... stock quotes and other things that don't involve nonporn. just have said things on desktop 69 and you still have 98 other destops for productivity! hooray for CF!

  • hasn't this already been done on windows before? the desktop cube thing? or u could jst window + tab.. or even older still.. alt + tab.. does exactly the same thing.. jst less hassle

  • If the OS just had a task bar this would be completely useless. :|

  • The name "Spaces" means to organize your windows. Mac OS has a task bar, its called a dock. For example, your doing a project with lots of images, websites, some video editing. Spaces organize your windows into different screens and makes working more efficient. Taskbar only manages windows. Trust me, it's a handy little thing to have when your boss leaves...just flip to a space with facebook open, then flip back! :)

  • i have an iMac. I'm writing this on it right now. I know what the dock is, and it is not the same as a task bar.

On windows, you just click minimise on WHATEVER you're doing and it's right down there for you to pick up from where you left off.

On a Mac they have pointless features like this whereby all your windows exist in limbo. I love my Mac, but i wish they'd just bite the bullet and put some of the better windows features in there rather than trying so hard to be different.

  • you can do that on any windows computer. even '95. It's called a taskbar, which macs don't have.

  • It's called a dock. Every mac has it.

  • docs only have applications. you probably thought i was comparing it to the Start menu, which is pretty much the same as a doc. the taskbar is different.

  • when you minimize a window, there is a new icon on the dock separated by a white line. So the dock has applications on left side and windows minimized on the right side.

  • Why can't they do desktop cube? O, I forgot Time Machine is chewing up all the RAM.

  • Time Machine doesn't run all the time, it backs up periodically according to what you prefer. It runs in the background automatically, it does it in a way that doesn't affect performance and feels invisible. Time Machine comes standard with all Macs, desktop cube must be installed on Windows.

  • If it is a program background or not, it has to use system resources thereby effecting performance whether you notice it or not. Second Installing a program is much more justified than spending even more money on more hardware to run a program that will not even allow you to use it. Would you buy a $200 suit to round out your wardrobe if you could never use it? Third, Out Of The Box is just that, open, plug, enjoy! Not open, plug, buy, plug, install, config enjoy. Fourth, compiz is better.

  • >doesn't run all the time

    >runs in the background automatically

    wat

And Time Machine may come standard, but the 1TB external HDD doesn't.

  • I use multiple workspaces in Compiz and find it very useful for separating my homework from general Internet browsing and media.

Spaces or multiple workspaces isn't for everyone but some users like me find it very handy.

  • That is so new and awesome! I have never seen anything like that before, except on every single linux distro I've ever seen. Why does mac repackage everything and pretend it's new?

    Kinda sad.

  • It is actually. But I'm sure you guys are used to being forgotten eh? No offense.

  • this spaces crap look terrible and pointless. i dont c y i need it or want it

  • Macfags sure love to point out how great macs are "out of the box" because there isn't much for macs outside the box all the important programs are either PC-exclusive or mac gets a shitty port. Got 64bit Photoshop yet? didn't think so lol. Oh yea I forgot you got bootcamp now so you can enjoy all the programs and games we do as well as your overpriced and underpowered hardware lets you. Wait what was the point to buy mac if you have to pay for windows anyway?

  • heyy hater! can u even use a mac? are sure u want to compare windows and mac on photo or movie program editing? and hum yea tell me how many times your precious windows freezes or gets viruses? dont tell me u never pushed ctrl+alt+del now... ur right its maybe overpriced...but its prettier! and less frustrating and as long as i dont spend extra money every year to fix my pc now and then or pay for antivirus programs im fine:)

  • What did you record the screen with? The fancy application that shows the keystrokes?

  • Ehh, Windows Vista has pretty much the same thing out of the box. its called "Window Switcher" and you can scroll through it with your mouse, arrows or whatever, also Windows has the "Alt+Tab" which will switch between any windows you have and give you a preview if you dont want to click. no setting up o turning on required =]

  • you obviously did not understand the concept of spaces (or multiple desktops as in linux)

  • What are the odds I'm using that program just now. Well, I'd assume it's the same one you're talking about.

  • i've got windows 7 RC 7100 and its awesome. Is got some hack- i mean mac like features but their improved. It also really squeezes the bang for your buck out of ur hardware.

  • What's the matter Macfags, can't right click?

  • um yeah i believe you can you just have to configure or something, but you can always use a PC mouse so not that big deal if you need to configure the normal one

  • yaaa you can dumbass...

can your gay ass pc zoom in...?

    didn't think so...

  • Zoom in?

Haha, why the fuck would I need to zoom in. I'm not a blind fuck like you.

  • and i'm not a broke fucking piece of trailer trash like you that can't afford a mac... go back to your trailer and warm yourself up a hot pocket...

  • Whats money got to do with anything you dumbcunt. If i want to pay for a shiity as Mac paperweight I would, but I don't need a piece of shit that doesn't do me anygood.

  • macs are state of the art in performance and design which is why they cost more than pc's... anything a pc can do a mac can do too... but not everything a mac can do a pc can do... obviously you don't know shit about computers dumbass, now go finish your hot pocket in your trailer...

  • Can a Mac play games other than lame ass puzzle games? Quit your douchebaggery and stop being a fanboy. And I love the shit where you can only think of 'white trash' as an insult. Go back to school you fucking 6 year old.

  • i don't play computer games, i'm not a gamer fag, i hang out with friends in real life rather than sitting at a desk playing halo and socom like your bitch ass...

  • Lol I get paid for what I do, so it doesn't bother me. And way to be stereotypical

  • is it really stereotypical if it's true...? and i'm not the lame ass who went and watched a mac video just to make a hater comment that isn't even true... your dumbass did not even know that you could right click on a mac, noob...

  • Yes it is stereotypical if it's not true. The only reason I watched this video because it was on my featured list, so why not take a look?

Then I comment and you get all fanboy saying it can right-click and has "zoom" like I give two shits what it can do. Just shut your mouth before you make yourself look more and more like a douchebag

  • ummm, excuse me, i'm the douchebag...?

you're the douche who made a false comment to begin with, so you're both ignorant and stupid...

  • troll'd

  • You're the one that made the false comment. Macs can't run EVERYTHING a windows pc can.

Don't say something like boot camp cause not only does that consume more ram than straight up running it doesn't run EVERYTHING to its full potential. Besides the Mac is pretty much just windows with extra freeware and a cleaner look.

  • They're completely different even in the programming sense. Mac uses a UNIX core, and windows doesn't.

Bootcamp is the same as your windows. We can completely replicate windows, so I don't know where your comment about RAM and not-full-potential is coming from. Basically: Yes, we can run EVERYTHING a windows PC can.

Mac is not windows with extra freeware and a cleaner look, why would you say that? Thats like saying Linux is windows just harder to use.

  • However Windows users can create a Hackintosh install and run everything Mac users can. So it really comes down to how much extra shit you want to install for a couple of apps.

  • Got me there.

  • First of all, Hackintosh is illegal. Macs are the only computers than can run Windows, Mac, and Linux legally. Second of all Bootcamp can run both Windows and Mac OS X at the same time. Swapping is a simple reboot.

  • First of all, Boot Camp is nothing more than a boot loader, period nothing special at all. Any OS can be loaded with one. Second who cares about legality, certainly not Apple who is in court now with Nokia. Besides everyone who has done a hackintosh install does it for evaluation purposes, instead of going out to buy a $2000+ PC with a different os. Third name one original MAC idea that no other os can do, or has done. Or one piece of software that has no mainstream equivalent for PC.

  • @kh40s8 The dock

  • @ aYummyPie : LInux/Unix has them, WinXp has several that can even support Vista. Hell the taskbar in win 7 is even better(although the rest sucks). BTW Compiz FTW!!

  • @kh40s8 Right out of the box? Right when you unbox it and turn it on?

  • Windows fans are so obsessed with 3rd party apps that they sometimes tend to forget to forget the shittiness of their OS ;)

Shittiness (in this case) = Inability to do something on it's own rather than depend on others to do it for you.

  • You miss the point. A poster below said that people buy Windows for the things they can add to it, which makes sense when it's put into that perspective. I believe Windows should come with more out of the box, but Microsoft makes more money selling individual components, so that's the way they choose to do it.

  • wow i have a 8 year old version of linux that can do that without wasting heaps of ram for dicky animations...gj mac

  • gay

  • This feature was available to Windows users (through third party software) before Mac had even thought about stealing Linux's base idea and shell.

  • minmizing is wayyy more easier.

  • but on windows u cant set it 2 boot things up instantly

  • if you mean boot up when windows loads, of course it can. if you literally mean instantly, mac doesnt offer that either, neither does linux.

  • Google GRUB or LILO. You have to install a second OS that uses either to set it up, but it's no different.

  • sex in the city music

  • haha i have the same desktop background :D

  • Cute.. I can do this little thing called "minimizing".. cool eye?

  • Lmfao,

    Are you kidding.

Why would you do that. You could just buy 2 freaking screen's and still have a cheaper computer then this MacFail.

  • f*ck up pc fans LInux isn't out of box! you had to INSTAL linux before you can use this feature and we are talking about OUT-OF-BOX-EXPERIENCE

  • Talk about showing off old products, Linux had this yeeaars ago out of the box man.

    How messy it your dock?

    Tidy it up now!

  • Linux can do all of this and WAY better and faster. Compiz Fusion ftw.

  • Well, fortunately. The only way you can prove mac is better. Is by saying out of the box, well guess what! We all customize our pcs after a while! :D Noone uses there computer how they got it!

  • looks just like PC's '3D desktop' ....

  • Why do you say "pc" like it's an operating system

  • but this is built in

  • Some people may find this usefull, but i am sorry, i hate spaces. i find it so pointless. But even more so i find it annoying, in the long run it is more of a hassle because I lose track of what is in what space, and takes me longer to navigate through all them to find what i am looking for. Honestly the taskbar at the bottom of windows is a perfect system: I can see everything i have open and can navigate through them with a single click.

  • And then you have the dock in OS X which is basically a taskbar.

  • Ya, but i cant just see from the dock all the programs i have running and switch through them, its got all the programs i could use, or to the right itll hold open programs, but they exist in one spot or the other, so i can still lose track of things easily. Mac OS i find is just flash over function, making things needlessly complicated.

  • You use Expose to switch programs not the dock. 4 fingers swiped down on the trackpad activates it

  • which one is expose again? (I owned a imac for about 3 months before i got fed up and sold it) is it when all the programs open are all sized so they can be shown at once? and if so, i couldnt stand that because i didnt have a track pad i had the one button mouse so instead expose was set up to appear when i pointed the mouse to the left corner of the screen... which i found annoying because it would do it when i didnt want it to and not when i did.

  • It is where the programs spread out. You don't have to set it to the left corner of screen.

  • you have to press F9. you can go to system preferences and change it to not open when you mouse over the corner.

  • What if ur missing fingers, GAWD!?!?!

  • ???

  • its called a dock

  • ZOMG i'm sorry eliteist

  • wtf do you need this junk for???? Id never use it...its just shiny

  • ok try opening a fullscreen app like Photoshop and managing 8 other windows. Fuck that. 2nd desk photoshop and then use your other stuff on desk 1

  • ok...... this was just silly, why the hell do you need that?

  • Cuz then, you can organize stuff depending on what you do easier. Typing and data that is related (research) can be in one while you can get everything ready (videos, games, etc...) for after you finish.

  • This was stolen off of Linux. Even without Compiz Fusion Linux still does this. Puppy Linux, a 100MB operating system, is capable of doing this.

  • idiot. Xerox made virtual desktops in 1986 before linux was made. wiki it fool

  • Thats right, thumb me down because you can't handle the truth. Linux is not original, they STOLE yes STOLE virtual desktops.

  • Apple stole the GUI from Xerox, where it was subsequently stolen by Microsoft. Watch Pirates Of Silicon Valley if you don't believe me.

That said, Jobs used some of the things he learned by walking into random lectures to improve the GUI beyond what Xerox could ever have done.

Besides, if it was in Xerox's GUI, how come it's taken so long to appear in MacOS? Explain that.

  • What multiple desktops? They were seen as useless until recently. Check wikipedia or read up on Xerox. They had multiple desktops back in the 80s dude.

  • What a worthless feature. Even if I valued it so much, I can find plenty of Linux builds with this built right in that are open source, cost nothing, and run on that same IBM PC that Windows does.

I must admit. I like using a dock. Good thing Windows has Rocketdock but alas, that's not "out of the box!"

  • Yeah baby...mac's are the bomb diggity!!!!!

  • Hmmm tricky. You really can't do this on Windows - oh wait, minimising and maximising. I can maximise one window, minimise it so it takes up no space on the screen, then maximise a different window. You know what? Might try one of those game things as well, alien as they are to mac users.

  • No need of something if your OS cant handle that many windows on 1 Dekstop...maybe better put the OS in a trash?

  • *a bunch of useless stuff i would never use*

  • LOL. I CAN DO THAT EASILY.

Linux Once Again Did This Years Ago, And I Can Download Multiple FREEWARE Programs That Can Do This For Windows

  • If you had read the video description, it says "Windows machine using some fancy third-party applications.".

  • compiz is default on most linux distros though. such as the most popular ubuntu

  • the only real use i can think of for this is porn. -_-

  • Who the heck would need over 9 applications at once on windows

But this feature is pretty good i have to admit

  • Sure, it's a "nice feature", but to be honest, I only put the stuff I regulary use on the desktop, and switching between desktops to find them wouldn't be really needed. Also, you can sort stuff in folders.

  • if i want this i'll just download Multidesk

  • Dude, seriously? Linux has had this option for years. Mac rips stuff off of every OS. They are not original at all.

  • Thats pretty neat but why not buy extra screens :P

All extra screens come with bragging rights, and better FOV in games :)

  • thats kind of retarded. why not just minumize and maximize like a normal human

  • Can you assign a button on a keyboard/mouse to open spaces?

  • yes, i activate it with F5 be cause my macbook doesnt have a backlit keyboard :P

  • Looks rather poor compared to the x-window systems with KDE running. But I'm willing to blame it on the fact, that macos x has good designers but bad developers

  • but has neither good designers nor good developers

  • pc does that to

  • I've used multiple desktops on Linux, and in my experience it only makes things more difficult and confusing. If someone could just get multiple desktops right, I might give it a second look. No one, not even Apple (who I would admittedly put high on the list) has done so as of yet. Not to my knowledge.

  • I am using multiple desktops every day. What's so difficult about using them? Another keyboard tab shortcut and you're getting more organized.

  • Maybe it works for some people, but having all my applications and folders spread across four different views and not being able to see all of my stuff at once at any given moment drives me nuts. I would rather just have four physical monitors, although that would obviously be the more expensive option... well, stuff is getting cheaper, so maybe one day that dream will become reality. Or better yet, one long curved screen that goes around me. That would be really nice. =]

  • I have to agree with TC here - it's not for everyone. If you're accustomed to using multiple desktops, then it'll be a breeze. Otherwise it's hell on Earth.

  • thanks for copying ubuntu linux mac!

  • dude they didnt copy ubuntu linux. a software for linux that is called compiz fusion lets you do the multiple desktop things so dont go around saying that ubuntu copyed mac =o

  • Just minimize like flotsamthespork says...

  • omg.. i want a mac soo bad now!!!!!

these wold be really good for stock brokers, so they don't have to have 5 different, energy sucking, screens to watch the same basic thing

  • kinda like what my ubuntu has called workspace switcher but mac's is much better

  • looks nice

  • So it's a multi-windowed version of the taskbar? wow, how pointless. You can achieve something like this by using multiple desktop mods for windows.

  • so please don't say that you can do it on a Windows machine using some fancy third-party applications! please... but does windows come with this? NO! point made

  • And the point of it is..?

It would be more logical to just minimize the programs you aren't using at that particular moment...

Another pointless feature that Mac is oh so happy to implement to appease their gullible audience.

    Death to all Mac users!

  • Actually, it's quite usefull. It's like working with multiple screens except you only need one.

And what's with the "Death to all Mac users"? :P

  • its dumb he is saying not to talk about 3rd pary. well nobody buys a windows system for the very few features that come with it. then whats the point. ppl buy windows for the 3rd party. people use windows because they can put stuff in it. essentially spaces is 3rd party only its included. its like a package deal at a restaurant. your still paying for the food its just together

  • there is 3rd pary software for pc that lets you have multiple desktops too and it has a 3d cube animation to switch between them. this isnt special.

  • Now instead of too many applications running we have too many desktops, oh god!

  • Yep Ubuntu has this too, and its about the most useless thing you can imagine. Usually I just go dual screen on my pc.

  • Seriously, what's the purpose of multiple desktops? If you have several applications running at the same time, you can just alt-tab between them...

  • OH GOD

ITS ALMOST LIKE YOU DONT WANT MAC TO HAVE BUISNESS

YOU CAN DO THAT WITH THIRD PARTY APPS YOU LIAR

OR JUST GET LINUX EVEN THOUGH LINUX IS FULL OF FAIL

But seriously, why but a Windows? It's such a pain to have everything upgradable and having programs working without an emulation layer.

  • I am not that rich to get a lot of RAM and with 3rd party software, you can have no guarantee quality and it slows your computer alot,

this theory is a fact and it works with expose, spaces, and quick Look

  • Multiple desktops are nothing new. Linux has had it for ages.

  • Yeah. "be original". :P

  • Yes but this is mac vs PC, not mac vs pc vs linux. I completely agree with u infact I run ubuntu but what they are trying to say is, mac does it too.

  • Maybe they should name it macos vs windows, not mac vs pc...The fact that mac is in fact a pc is another good reason ;)

  • My windows has that because of the video driver. All I have to do is move my mouse counter-clockwise to switch between them.

  • I have a new Macbook pro and I love it, so don't get me wrong. But you can get spaces on a PC too. Just install Ubuntu. And it's free!

  • amazing!!! i never bothered with this feature cause i didnt really know what to do with it...

  • Dude, you gotta commercialize yourself more in some way. With this great videos you'd go straight to the top.

  • lol this spaces stuff is so useless XD

  • spaces is pretty stupid (more clicks or buttons to switch apps) the best thing about switching apps is expose (when it shows all open windows). I know vista has areo but the mac ver. is wayyyyyy better!

  • Can you change the background picture per space?

  • no. But you can set a mac to change it's wallpaper ever couple of minutes, or days.

  • Yes, you can, but on linux or bsd, not on macos

  • Also, I just noticed how much spaces looks like the XP flip...and the Vista 2D flip...hmmm...

  • Or, you could skip the pointless setup of spaces and just use flip, two keys and you can switch betwixt all of your windows like nothing.

  • Spaces is not for switching windows...

  • Great Video!

But there are also some free windows-tools who can do this! Just google for "multiple desktops" or "virtual desktops" ;)

  • "Out-of-box Experience"

  • ummm no offence but editing looks funny when u do it with keynote get something like funal cut express or better add ons for it

  • dude, Final Cut express doesnt come with new Macs! Plus not everyone can afford the pro line products!

The reason I use Keynote to make most of my videos is to show everyone that IT WORKS! and its EASY!

no offense but your videos just ruined Final Cut!

  • ummm i dont use final cut on this account lol all my videos on here are keynote 2 just sayin keynote isnt the greatest video etidor so stay chill

  • Nice
