  • im so glad to be a newfie

  • this song decribes us (newfoundlanders) so much

  • @MrMarxabc Yes it does. There aren't too many who don't know the words.

  • @USANewf i do off by heart :)

  • 1:40 what is that???? it kinda looks like a bird.... can't tell

  • @AwsomeHockeyChick It is a bird, a man in Trinity fashioned a large crow out of the spade of a shovel. He had it on top of his flakes to keep other birds from pitching down and taking his caplin that he had out to drive. Pretty crafty if you asks me.

  • @USANewf o thx

  • @AwsomeHockeyChick It is a bird, a man in Trinity fashioned a large crow out of the spade of a shovel. He had it on top of his flakes to keep real birds from pitching down and taking his caplin that he had out to drive. Pretty crafty if you asks me.

  • This is Great Big Sea right?

  • @Dragon1813 yes it is

  • Hey ,,,,,I sung this song in a concert when I was in grade five not tellin how many years ago. Thankyou for sharing,,,,,,

  • @thekevinkyle Glad you enjoyed it.

  • i see you must have been to trinity. it's where i'm from you did a grat job with the video

  • @MrBansheeman1 Thank you for viewing. Yes it was a wonderful trip to Trinity. We rented a house and took in the pageant which was just wonderful.

  • Should move back here lol

  • @FireDemonYeaah Trust me, I think about it a lot.

  • is this great big sea?

  • @ranger12116 Yes, it's in the credits. One of my favourite songs.

  • @ranger12116 Yes it is. I think it's mentioned in the credits, it's been a while since I've watched this one, but I usually give credit where credit is due.

  • Great rousing chorus. Should be required listening in every house each morning. Ah ! The Irish and The Newfies ! Where would we be without them? God bless you Harry, you're still raising the steps and the hearts of thousands every day. I wish I had you play in my place; "Tir na nÓg" in Toronto. Long may your wonderful memory last.

  • Thanks for putting this up. Im a displaced newfi and i always enjoy reminders of my home. It was so much better back home then here on the mainland.

  • @truenewfoundlander8 I agree, there is no place like home.

  • You actually stayed in my grandfather's house in trinity in the pictures. Kelly landing is the name of the bed and breakfast, but my grandfather grew up in that house with his whole family....

  • @ATLThrashers2 small world. We had a great time in Trinity it's such a beautiful community. I've been going home 3 or 4 times a year. I was home in July/August for 3 weeks, had a great time as always.

  • those are some damn fine pictures. is that all over or a specific town? i'd like to know so i can get some like that as well

  • @ptetimmah Most of them are in and around St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula. The ones with people dressed in period custume were taken in Trinity where they do a walking pageant through the town done by Rising Tide Theatre, I think. Glad you enjoyed them.

  • 3 weeks till i'm back on newfie soil. I lives on the mainland now, i misses it so much

  • @samilauramarie I'm going home in 12 more days. I'll mostly be in town, but will spend a few days out in Central. Where are you from ?

  • @samilauramarie i'm from Mount Pearl!

  • Kind of wish this was the Newfoundland national anthem. My grandfather was from there...God, i wish i lived there!

    Cheers from Boston!

  • @AerosmithAngel31 Have you ever been to Newfoundland? I know there was probably thousands the left Newfoundland and moved to the "Boston States" as many called it. I think there is an area around Boston called Chelsea? There is a town in Trinity Bay called New Chelsea, I think many of them were from there.

I live in Maryland but go home 3-4 times a year.

  • @AerosmithAngel31 Youtube user picturenut has a video posted "Ode to Newfoundland" it's one of my favorites.... I tried to send you the link but I kept getting an error message when I tried to send it. Maybe you can do a search. It's really beautiful with great shots of Newfoundland.

  • @USANewf No, unfortunately I've never been to Newfoundland. My great grandfather was actually a fisherman and eventually just moved his (our?) family down to Boston. And yes, there's an area near Boston called Chelsea.

  • @AerosmithAngel31 there is a newfie anthem. "the ode to newfoundland'

  • Greatest place on earth? i tink so me son. and Trinity :)

  • codroy valley rocks

  • My father was born in Corner Brook, he had a twin brother there that passed before him. Lewis Simms, worked for years at the Glen Mill Inn.

  • Amen to that... what part of Newfoundland are you living ?

  • West coast, born and raised in the Corner Brook/Deer Lake area.

  • I've been home for a year, after 5 years on the mainland. There really is no place on Earth quite like Newfoundland - the people, the land, the culture, it's all so distinct.

There's no where I'd rather be.

  • I too live in maryland.I haven't been back in 27 yrs,but I am still proud to be a newfoundlander

  • Wow, I'm anxious to hear your story. I left Newfoundland in 1993 to work in New Orleans, 3 years later moved to Washington D.C. and have been in this area ever since. Up until a few weeks ago I still had both my parents in St. John's, not just my Mom.... I make a mean jiggs dinner if you have a taste for some salt meat !

  • I'm living in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. I went to high school at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts. I just got back from Newfoundland this past Sunday

  • usa newf, where ya live, I'm from carbonear harbour grace, now I'm in gros morne natinal park rocky harbour. I LOVE NEWFOUNDLAND. it's the best place possibly liveible. anyone get a chance, come to newfoundland.

  • Thank you for your comments. Apparently this old folk tune has been borrowed and re-used a number of times since ? the 1800's ?

  • As far as i can tell, this song, as well as many others including Brisbane Ladies, was based on an English sea shanty called Spanish Ladies. the first known reference to that dated to about 1796. This version is from about 1876

  • I know this song as "Brisbane Ladies" - the Australian version. It certainly gets around! Very nice video.

  • Thank you for your comments. I happen to be home right now, and it is hard to leave when the time comes. I'm glad Newfoundland found a spot in your heart.

  • I'm a truck driver from Ontario and spent 3 days in Newfoundland in early April. It was my first visit and it's beautiful there. I hope someday to go back either through work or a vacation. Now I understand why every Newfie I meet in Ontario is homesick!!

  • Go my son, go.... you're never regret it !

  • i wanna see what it's like, i never left nova scotia except to go stay with my brother in calgary but the sights weren't really very exciting :P i wanna go to NFLD and PEI xD

  • im from comfort cove newstead and i went to greenwood academy anybody go there?

  • No, just went out for a weekend when I was home a couple of years ago. I'm from the Bay Roberts Area, Clarke's Beach. But spend most of my time in St. John's.

  • very beautiful trinity pictures! are you from around there?

  • You got that right. I just got back from being home to Newfoundland Saturday night.... had a great time. But, it's never long enough !

  • Where do you live now? I hope you get to Newfoundland some day. It's well worth the trip, you can't help but have a good time.

  • Yes my dear, follow your heart. Newfoundlanders are one of a kind, and Newfoundland is a place like no other. Thanks for your comments.

  • When I get old enough to move out, and i get enough money, I think I might move there. I've gone to Nova Scotia on one of those Tim Hortons summercamps, and I loved it.

  • Hey by!

Newfie living in Northern Alberta, Canada here... been away from the water so long I all but forget what it looks like!... And I would but for my desktop picture! Lots of Newfies out this way because the work is still good out here... but every one of us misses home for one reason or another... just like you and me. Thanks for the little taste of home in the pics!

  • Thanks for your comments. I've been gone since 1993 but I goes home about 3 times a year.

  • Omg I see Joe XD

  • Joe XD?

  • Fantastic pictures, fantastic music...

Though I do have a question for anyone who knows their folk music - which came first, these lyrics or the lyrics for 'Spanish Ladies' - they're both sung to the same tune :)

As a Brit, obviously I prefer the latter, but GBS still have a really awesome sound lol.

  • Thanks for your positive comments, here some information that will answer your questions.

History: Composed in the 1870s by Henry W. LeMessurier (1848-1931) who was a Customs official in St. John's (see Rosenberg in West 1: 56). Based on the English shanty, "Spanish Ladies."

  • Great pictures. Really makes a misplaced East Coaster that relocated to the Big Smoke homesick for the slower paced, simpler life. Mom's a Newf, Dad's from PEI and I'm from NS. We pretty much got 'er all covered! Cheers!

  • i'm a newf too was born here mind u i'm a townie
