  • I have a 1971 Astronaut one, man is it hard to control

  • Space 1999 eagle toy

  • I had one too. This was sometime back in the 1970's. It was one of my most cherished toys. A friend came over and started playing with it and soon broke it. Boyd did that day suck.

  • THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS MORNING MEMORY!!!

  • HANDS DOWN THE BEST TOY MADE IN THE 70'S I'M 49 YEARS OLD AND I'LL BUY ON TODAY IF I COULD FIND ONE!

  • Remember "Bombs Away"? That was another good one.

  • I HAD ONE - POSSIBLY THE GREATEST TOY EVER !!! THE MEMORIES OF KNOWING THE SHAPE OF THAT BOX UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE AND THE LONG ANTICIPATION OF THE WEEKS BEFORE I WOULD GET TO OPEN IT, AND PLAY WITH IT, ARE SOME OF MY MOST CHERISHED MEMORIES AS A CHILD - BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES TO SEE ONE AGAIN........VERY, VERY POWERFUL MEMORIES ABOUT THIS TOY !!!

  • @LISZTIZATION

THIS WAS INDEED ONE OF MY MOST CHERISD MEMORIES. A CHRISTMAS MEMORY I WILL NEVER FOR GET. I WAS TEN, AND MY DAUGHTER WILL HAVE HER TENTH CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR.

YOU HAVE SUMMED IT UP WELL. THANKS!!

  • Why the hell don't they make these anymore? I would love to have one again.

  • I remember having mine as well, but mine was a tan color. Miss this toy!

  • Mine only lasted a couple of days when the spring coupler to the helicopter broke :( Was fin for that very short time

  • @gordon6029 That's unfortunate. Mine lasted for many years and I beat the hell out of it. Played with army men, landed it the Lionel train, got strings stuck in the rotor etc. It last for probably 20 years. It did finally die though, I think the original space capsule, and raft are still in the Lego box. I loved that thing.

  • i had one mine was a big battleship with a vetibird

  • This brings back memories! One of the best toys ever!

  • Fun toy, I never could pick up things very well tho.

  • had one of these when i was around 8 or 9. was my favorite toy.

  • Very obscure memory of this toy. However I had the version that was mounted at the stern of a ship! It was a foam ship with decals. Anyone remember Mattel's Hotline trains? Or 'Kingding'?

  • Screw video games. I'll take this, Ideal's Evel Knievel, and Kenner's TTP any day. Kids today don't know what real toys are.

  • i had one .so basic but brill

  • I agree, a great video! It does bring back memories of the 70's when I was a kid and got one of these as a Christmas present. What memories! I am at present 44 years old. Unfortunately, I/we don't have it anymore, when we moved out of the house we grew up in back in '86, my parents gave away (or even threw out some) basically all our toys and games, since we were in college and becoming young adults. You can't keep everything, you must move on, but the memories stay with you forever.

  • BTW, they make a mini (~1') version of this toy now, and you can buy it at target for like $20.

  • @Subw00er wHAT'S A MINI WEIRD SQUIGGLE ICON 1 ?

  • @rogntudjuuuuu Oh, I just meant its about (~) 1 foot long as opposed to the original which is like 3 feet.

  • I have great memories of the long spring getting stuck in our green shag carpet. :) This and the Tomy big loader were my two favorite toys growing up!

  • This was one of my most ultimate toys!!!! Sheesh! Absolutely awesome!

  • Wow that's a flashback. Thanks for the memories.

  • Remember this like it was yesterday!!! One of my best Christmas when I got this along with other things of course!!

  • Now THIS brings back some memories. Love it!

  • Vertibirds are AWESOME when combined WITH train sets! Trust me, I know :D

  • I have a Vertibird!! Mine still works great! I bought it down a couple months ago and it fired right up! I need to find some of the accessories though.. Thanks for posting!

  • @DukeNukem65 Wow you doooo? Shame of it was that we moved a lot as a kid and each time we did my ol man would chuck all the kids' toys in the trash. Cool to know they still exist, mate.

  • @rogntudjuuuuu Yea, I have most of my toys, and I am 46 I was always careful with them and they are in great condition. The Verdi Bird is one of my favorites!

  • I used to have on ot those. Too bad my brother decided to break it. I now have a smaller knock off that I picked up for ten bucks.

  • I broke my Vertibird on Christmas morning. Mine has these little rubber tips on the ends of the propeller. If one or both of those came off, the Vertibird didn't fly any more-- it was just bounce up and down. Returned it for a new one, and don't think that one flew long, either.

Fun while it lasted. DIdn't the original kit have an astronaut sitting in a raft with a big loop in his hands that you had to hook? That was damn hard!

  • @testodude Yes it did , and yes, it was dman hard. Where did you live (grow up ) when you had one? i was in Quesnel, 1973.

  • @rogntudjuuuuu deep south USA. 1973 sounds about right. Hot toy that year.

  • I got one from my cousins from the US in1976 when we still lived in holland the price tag was still on it it was 11,99.All my friends wanted one to.Mine was blue.

I bet if mattel bring this back on the market it will sell like hotcakes again.

  • Im 47 years old and i want a vertibird dangnabit! Most of my toys didnt last a year. I sold a huge box of Hot Wheels Sizzlers tracks and cars to my friend in 1975 for next to nothing. i should kick myself in the a@@

  • @stomp919 I had one too! Leave it to you tube! I want another one I am 46.. Beats a slinky! The cat did not hang around when i would fire this up!

  • @bambam691964 Man the cat would have a real messed up head getting slammed with the Vertibird lol. Since 1999 when I finally bought a pc I've bought a bunch of my old Aurora monster models and Topper Johnny Lightning and Hot Wheels redline cars. Never lose the kid in ya!

  • Greatness! Loved the Vertibird as a kid!

  • This thing was great. I think mine was older than this one. It seems it was orange, I had a space capsule (still do) a raft and a man to pick up with the hook. Played with it for years.

  • This was DEFINITELY one of the coolest toys ever. We just had the simple one like the guy has here. I looked this up because there is something similar that I just bought at Target for a gift for my brother's son. My brother flipped out when I saw it. Not as powerful, as large-scale, nor as dangerous as the original but very cool indeed.

  • yeah, the original blade would draw blood. Now that's a toy!

  • @testodude Blood? Haha! Reminds me of of when I fired up my whizzer and stuck it in my sisters hair. My Mom beat the fuck out of me!

  • @testodude That is funny!

  • I had one of these when I was five in 1974and believe it was the theme version of the short-lived show "Chopper One." One of the best toys a boy could ever have!

  • I had the coast guard boat, still my favorite toy ever.

  • I had the Coast Guard Rescue version. A cool styrofoam ship the bird was attached to. Was my best Christmas present ever I think, I spent hours flying that stupid thing round in circles, picking up stuff with the hook.

  • Well! I guess this shows just how uncoordinated 'TheGringoLoco' really was! We had international flying contests using Vertibird. (Pong must be your game of choice Loco! DUH! 'The GringoLoco' could not even qualify for the Dunce round!

FYI: The Army, Navy, USCG and Marine Corp used the Vertibird and the Labrynth Game to screen for helicopter fight training candidates.

  • I remember playing with this stupid goddamn toy in the mid-70's as a kid 35 years ago. It was cool for about 10 minutes, then you'd get a good laugh after one of your stupid friends got too close to the helicopter blades and got nipped. lol Then it was time to turn the Coleco Pong game on your TV for another 20 min's. Damn, were we simple back then.

  • They do make a very similar toy like this, which you can buy in target stores here in southern california. When i was given this toy on christmas day 1971 it was the best toy ever. Every boy inmy town had this toy. It cost 14 dollars back then. I believe this was mattels best ever toy. 1971 was the first year it was introduced. The later years were better only because they had better theme's to add to the adventure. They used 4 d cell batts which were good for the base because of weight.

  • I had 2 of these. My favorite toy ever. Unfortunately bot h ended up with broken propellers and no super glue back then to fix it. Not to mention the force would fling it back apart anyways.

  • Awsome toy, took me back to my childhood,i had the police rescue set, it was great, thanks man !!!

  • My favorite toy

    Thanks for posting

  • had one myself .....had the fire rescue one

  • I had one of those 35-40 years ago. That is great.

  • This was my favorite toy too. There was only one thing wrong with this toy. It went through batteries like nobody's business. It needed an AC adapter.

  • To paraphrase Jean Shepard, I received this gift when I was 12 years old. It was, and will ever be, the greatest Christmas present I ever received.

  • Best toy ever, shame they don't make them anymore.

  • My brother had one ..but would never let me fly it :(

  • This was my favorite toy as a kid.

    This was the greatest !

  • simplistic elegance. who needs all those fansy-dansy microchips in toys.lol.

  • I had one of those when I was a kid, back when the earth's continents were still slipping and sliding.

  • that was my favorite toy as a kid. I loved that Vertibird. So cool to see that in action again.

  • WOW I miss that toy ... it's so funny ... the sound in your video, I SO remember that exact sound (of the Vertibird). If they still made them, I'd have one or two ... and I'm almost 50. Thnx for posting.

  • I am amazed that someone still has a VertiBird. How have you kept it so long? I also loved this toy, but the drive spring couldn't handle the torque and they'd crap out and be useless. We used to battle each other in intersecting circles. They also made a plane. All of my friends had the Vertibird and a few had the planes. Great fun, and great memories!

  • Also if the prop hit anything it broke..which I did twice ;) And being this was pre SuperGlue...it was ruined

  • They don't make cool toys like this these days. I fondly remember playing with my Vertibird on Christmas Day. One of the coolest toys I had as a kid!

  • i have the 1971 version (actually it's my dada..lol) but mine is a verti bird rescue ship....the chopper is red and it comes with a huge foam coast guard ship and supplies....including a man you have to save.

  • I also had that ship. I played with it I swear every day. My older brothers (like in their 20's) played with it on Christmas day, and I finally had to bring it my room to play with it.

    Great memories...

  • this was the coolest toy ever! I wish I still had one. I use to beg for it every x-mas. They used to die and not be able to handle the abuse a kid may do while shoving them in closets or whatever, but they were the coolest toy ever. I'd pay $ for one and I bet their on E-bay

  • Oh my Lord, how I *loved* this toy ! They kept breaking, though. If memory serves there was a little spring that controlled the ups and downs of the chopper wand, and that was a major design flaw. After buying me about three new ones, my Mom finally gave up.

    Still, it *rocked*

  • My all-time favorite toy!!!

  • Ur never to old to play with this 1!!!!

  • This is SOOOOOOOo Cool!!!!!!! I still have my Vertibird at my parents' house....still in the closet of the bedroom I grew up in as a kid. I am now in my mid-40s, and this STILL excites me today as it did as a kid. I remember bugging my dad about getting it for months, and I think he got it to shut me up. I absolutely LOVED this toy. Thanks for sharing the great memories!!!!

  • You grew up in a closet????? :-)

  • @hubbardmediagroup LOLOLOL

  • i have mine also i just put fresh d battery's in it i love torturing the cat with it lol

  • I LOVE my VertiBird! I have the one my folks gave me for Christmas back in 1970 and I also have 2 other N.I.B.!

  • Vertibird is the best toy EVER!!!

  • You are so lucky you still have your Vertibird. Looks to be in good shape, too.

Had one back in '75. We used to get two or three and place them within range of each other and have dogfights. Good times. Good times...

  • My brother and I had these as kids and loved them.Wish we still did,I'm sure we destroyed it.Great video thanks for sharing.

  • I got one of these Christmas '73. Mine was on a styrofoam boat. I remember I kept slamming the chopper into the side of it and knocking pieces off it.

  • How remarkable! I had one of these as a boy and it was truly a blast! Thanks for bringing back some warm memories ;-]

  • holy shit

  • Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

BABY! I loved this toy with a passion!! I also remember the one with the hand crank! Or was that the airplane? But The Vertibird was my favorite of toys! Sheesh! God Bless you for posting this video!

  • I had one also. Great until my cousin stepped on it ( Damn you ).

I learned a lot about physics.

  • Fantastic! I had one when I was around 10. I now still talk about it occasionally with my 10 year old son!! Best toy ever (with the possible exception of my first ever Thunderbird 2!) I might have to find one on eBay.

  • I raked leaves, to get that thing, I loved it.

  • I had the police one and it was the BEST TOY EVER. I think I probably destroyed it; I remember purposely crashing it into things a lot. (A boy can only fly around in a circle for so long without getting bored.)

My cat was fascinated by it. I think he thought it was a bird. Seems to me both of us got whacked by the rotor a few times. And THAT'S probably why it's no longer being made...it HURT!

  • I got the startrek enterprize one for Christmas 75 my lil bro got the real deal the vertibird. The startrek one sucked ass . The Verti bird was the coolest toy ever

  • Best toy EVER!!!!

  • GREAT! I had the Astronaut Rescue one when I was about 8. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. About 9 years ago I went to Toys R Us looking for one for my son but couldn't remember the name of it. Little did I know they stopped making it in the early 80's. Certain toys (like this one) would still be great today. Mattel should've never stopped making this!

  • GREATEST.......TOY.........EVER!

  • Wow, Like many of you I had this..Damn, they dont make toys like this anymore! Thanks for the vid, brought back memmories of many fun filled hours!!!

  • They ate batterys,no duracell back in the days when I had mine.

  • Great video! I still dream of mine from my childhood. We used to hit it once in a while with a blast of air from my powerline BB gun. Lot's of fun till the dog attacked it..the bastard LMAO

  • Actually, you were mostly right. The prop thrust is what makes it fly. The cord is just a guide and only keeps the copter at the same distance from the base unit.

It does take quite a bit of practcie and skill to fly like this. I had ont too.

  • I too had this toy in the early 70's. had it moire than once. I had the police one and an orange one. Silly me actually believed it was acyally flying not realizing that the cord was lifting it.

  • Well that takes me back about 35 years!
