  • This video "always" pumps me up!...great carnage...

  • Oh, man, even after all this years, I thinks it´s one of the BEST rafting videos ever!

  • @cataclism22 You are right on the money, my friend. I guided for Northern Whitewater for 26 years. No computer generation fake-ass in this video. It's all the real deal! However, a lot of the real bad "this can kill you" spots are gone now; all washed away by the constant slugging down of high velocity water for years and years. But in the 80's and 90's it was fookin' out of control, as you noted. Regards.

  • i went on the lower class and lost my paddle

  • Still fookin' TOP GUN in 2011 for all MAINE rafting video's. Nothin' even comes close. Regards and kudos to all guides and participants. "Gunsmoke" RMG NWE 1980-2006.

  • the guy at 3:28 was so close to getting his legs owned by that rock! lol

  • Looks like fun! :-)

  • Wow that is intense.

  • wow!

  • yea these guides are river cowboys

  • Yes.....this is what we do for fun in Maine.....lol.....nice vid ! And to the dude who says he could run this river in a canoe!! You're full of it dude!! You obviously didnt ever run this river!! Its a class 4 / 5 - at high water!! Hello??

  • @franformefantage I've done the Dead at high water and the Kennebac in a canoe. Never made it to the Penobscot. Just have to know what your doing. Yes my first run down the Kennebac was scary, but I made it without swimming..

  • Awesome comp! Thanks for being here!

  • Haha, that's my brother at 2:17 :)

  • some nasty stoppers there =P play boating heaven

  • the ender @ 1:00 has got to be one of the best ive ever seen

  • Holy S**t! I thought the Moose was bad. This is next on my list.

  • What rafting company is this???

  • i love this video

  • HOLY SHIT....and I thought the Ocoee was rough! Damn!

  • Nice to see you got your soundtrack back, Nick. 5 stars and a 110% rating for "THE BEST" Maine rafting vid of all times. Them were great days. Regards, "Gunsmoke"

  • going into big gnarly holes on purpose ? thats nuts why bother with a boat

  • H2 oh my gawd! you guys have titanium nuts in a kevlar sack!

  • Ho-Ly Crap! I do not envy the guy at 4:15

  • The Vacation Land for Ya!!!!!!!!!

  • best raft is upside down

  • No thanks! I`ll stick to my kayak. Not going to risk my ass to 9 other guys that have no clue as to when to paddle or not. Falling on top of me or smacking me with their paddles, not me. Gotta give these guides credit!

If I wind up in the water it will be because of me.

Just don`t get run over by one of these rubber busses. I`ve had one slam into me while I was stuck in a hole and it hurts! Still didn`t swim.

  • Crazy...

    Thanks for posting this

  • BIG hole = BIG flip

You need to put some more audio up

  • brutal...

  • woo exploding car

  • When does this river run?

  • Hey Nick-Getta soundtrack will ya?

This is the best damn rafting vid on YouTube. The condensed version doesn't cut it.

    Yours Truly,

    Gunsmoke

  • Can't we all just get along? LOL

  • 1:21

    that is cool

  • they disabled your powerman5000 (you bastards!)

  • this was such a good vid aswell :D

  • if u fall out get back to the boat cuz its gunna be ruff... i got exterminated in ripgenous gorge lol it was pretty wild

  • whats the song

  • This are just somr Rafters -- swimming in rapids is their Hobby ^^

    (yes i am kayaker^^)

  • my cuz is a tour at three rivers and im going there next summer cant wait!

  • have you done it before? what happens when you fell of the boat... whats the procedure there?

  • Sick Vid.

  • THAt is the best raftin vid ive seen be proper mint to go down tht !!!

  • i went rafting and it wasn't as dangerouse as that!! OMG that looks scary

  • fucking brilliant

  • That looks easy, whats wrong with you guys?

  • I rafted it and complained to my Guide they did'nt offer solo canoes. He told my I was out of my mind. Well I am a class 3 white water OC1 boater. He told me I would be a bunch of toothpicks at the bottom of a rapid. Guess he has never heard of whitesell or airbags. Hood ornamant river punk. He also did not like my metion of j-strokes. I don't think he knew what I talked of. All those wipeout could have been avoided by proper lane and hard paddling. Three rivers was still fun....

  • honestly dude? wtf?

your canoe would get muched with or without floatbags

  • And you can think what you want. Serious OC1 boats are just as nimble as a kayak. With airbags I can roll and OC1 all day.

I have boated wated far more technical than the Penobscot.

  • it doesnt matter how technical it is

the big shit is goin to be 10+ ft over your head

    OC1 takes opn water anyways....

    i respect any c1

its hard as shit to do

  • Its true, the real boaters are not on floating pillows. They paddle single handed. And get the job done.

  • dude most of that is class 4 and class 5... big difference... you may get a canoe down if you green light the whole river thereby wussing out on any major hits..

  • Seriously, if you're only a class III whitewater canoeist then you would walk around most of the Class IV-V rapids on the Penobscot. Sounds like you're full of hot air anyway, if you think a Class III boater has any business in Rip Gorge or the Crib.

  • What I ran on the Penobscot in a raft. I would run in a canoe. Its big water no doubt, but not very technical water. The lines are easy to see. As well as the current. Both are very easy to read. Rafts seem to take different lines than that of a canoe. Only an inexperienced paddler would be hard up on the Penobscot. For someone who knows how to paddle. The Penobscot would just be a day of fun. More challenging water in Arizona.

  • Dude, if you, a Class III boater, as you stated yourself, ran the Penobscot you would truly get worked and owned. As for your statement that "only an inexperienced paddler would be hard up on the Penobscott," I would like to reply that it's a Class IV-V river and you are completely wrong. I think either you didn't run the river or have no idea what you're talking about, or maybe both.

  • Ran it with three rivers in Aug 06. Rode on a bus that we beat on with our paddles to the tune of "We will We will Rock You". Hit the floor twice then the roof once.

Your right though. I probably did'nt run it. Rafters think they have the only craft that can manage white water.

  • Sigh...

  • Actually... rafting is fun. :D

  • A lot of guide owe a lot of pitchers. Anyone heard of an OS line? Hold on to your raft buddy

  • you swim back bro or else your going swimming down river... i got exterminated in rupogenas gorge and fell out at the falls iys fucking exciting i love it

  • i don't anything about rafting. but when the boat flips and everbody is in the water whow do you comeback to the boat? when you are swimming with all that rocks around you don't get all f*cked up in the legs, arms, etc?

  • RE: when the boat flips and everbody is in the water whow do you comeback to the boat?

Usually there is a lead raft set up in an eddy down below to haul in swimmers from a flipped boat and salvage their craft. How bad you get f*cked up depends on the river. Kennebec is deep-Only place you can get trashed is hole called Bonecruncher. Rip Gorge on the Penobscot is shallow and will bark you up bad. Plus if you don't keep your feet up and one gets stuck between a couple rocks you can drown.

  • I just came back fom three rivers yesterday, i went on the kennebec.

  • went this weekend after my gf talked me into it..scared shitless

  • HA HA I've been on the Upper Gorge a couple of times with NEOC. Actually I'm thinking about trying to be a guide, but I did swim the ripogemous gorge once (including exterminator hole) that was pretty intense.

  • RE: Actually I'm thinking about trying to be a guide,

    Go for it...Soupman

You'll get a couple thousand dollars worth of raftin' for whatever the 10-day course costs which I think is around $300.

You'll be boatin' will a bunch of novices so be sure to wear a high float life jacket.

There will be lots of swimmin'.

Just be aware, there is a glut of guides at the moment.

  • thanx for the info lol

  • RE: Im going here in two weeks with six buddys of mine class 5 for us hopefully we wont get to fucked up

The watersheds are full and a lot of water is being released from the dam system at the moment...you'll have a gaz.

The flips in the first section of the vid are mostly in the Exterminator Hole which begins the run down Ripogenus Gorge.

If the water is up over 3200cfs you got a 50/50 chance of goin' over even if your doin' everything right.

Don't fall out in the Cribworks!

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhfffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • Im going here in two weeks with six buddys of mine class 5 for us hopefully we wont get to fucked up

  • wats the song called?

well anyways im going here tomoroow and im so excited! class 3

  • Its hell

  • just took the family on class 2 & 3 at natahala nc....first for them 2nd time for me bragging that i can run this raft without a guide......well most of the trip went great until big bolder sprang me from the boat like a doll(friday 13) lol water was 36 degrees pulled under front of raft and could not get back aboard without the help of fam. thanks to son bd who held the boat and pulled a ice cube from the water. love you guys next year with a guide $ well spent bb

  • im goin whitewater rafting on the lehigh river tomorrow

  • does the penobscot run this fast all year round?

  • Yes, during commercial rafting season it's dam released.

  • holy crap!!! i coundn't imagine what this thing looks like in late march!!!

  • I do the Penobscot every year, at least for the past five years now. Its one of the most fun things i get do all year. The rapids are crazy fun, and they can really beat you up...i speak from experience!

  • i do this almost every weekend i live like 200 yrd from watter like this

  • RE: right at :58 the river kicks the guide right out of the boat and soon everyone else

For an example of world class river guiding, watch the run @ 1:34. The raft hits the rock above the hole, knocking the guide out of then boat, which then goes in backwards.

Check out the passenger in the pink jacket. LMAO..Not a clue about what's gonna happen next!

  • yeah that guide at 1:34 had a shit weekend of working the river. A pathetic display, but we live and learn

  • RE: stupid tourists but YEAH Go For It!!

HE WHO TELLS THE STORIES RULES THE WORLD!

    Old Hopi Indian Proverb

  • here's my story: I worked the lake and the river for three seasons with Scott Paper Moosehead Towing do even know what that is?: RIVER DRIVER!

  • right at :58 the river kicks the guide right out of the boat and soon everyone else -- this is great video! hello Maine!

  • stupid tourists but YEAH Go For It!!

  • are people dieing in this

  • No deaths, the worst injury would be nothing more than a broken bone....or two.

  • This is obviously class 4 or 5, or even a class by it's self..What class would be well suited for my two boy who are great swimmers and can tread water? Ages 8 & 12

  • RE: What class would be well suited for my two boy who are great swimmers and can tread water? Ages 8 & 12

CLASS I & II for the 8YO maybe III for the 12.

13 is the cut-off age for upper river runs on the Kennebec & Penobscot.

Ands, ALWAYS have them wear good life jackets in any water over a I.

  • thanx for the info

  • bwaaahaa! yard sale!

  • very funny!!!lol

  • who really wan't to trash is client like this?

  • damn, where do I sign up!?! Too much fun. I love rafting big rivers.

  • go to northern outdoor's website for any info.

  • 1:04 HAHAHAHA

  • lol

  • sorry i meant 5:20

  • Newsowdnehunk falls. Not so bad as Exterminator. Fall out there and you've got a lovely memory to take home.

  • yah what he said

  • what idiots what continually go down a rapid and flip???? they're going for all the reversal holes... 2:01 wtf a river wide ledge????

  • they're going for all the reversal holes...

"them holes"...are the way down the river.

No passage thru Rip Gorge without goin' thru the Exterminator. Bad raft flips are like death...ya just never know when it's gonna happen.

  • this is a boner making video! sooo cant wait to get on the water this spring.. proud to be a ME Guide betches!! love it.

  • SPRING BOATING IS HERE

  • A huge winter snowpack means monster 2008 water releases. Big time pucker factor for the Penobscot's "Exterminator Hole" runners.

Tighten them float jackets and hit the head before leaving.

  • this looks like a must do before u die..wow where is this, after seeing this video i gotta raft this now

  • All footage was filmed on on the Kennebec, Dead and Penobscot Rivers in Maine. Neighboring towns are "The Forks" and Millinocket.

  • After years of rafting I almost died when I hit my head on a rock and went semi concious and got caught under the boat. If I had not been experienced I would have drowned. It scared the hell out of me and I have chickened out now. I don't raft any longer.

  • I have rafted the Penobscot about 25 times. For the first time ever last summer our raft flipped at the top of the cribworks. All 8 of us, including the guide swam the class 5 rapid. Craziest shit. I can't wait to do it again this summer!

  • Are there any undercuts, sieves or other death traps in Cripworks? One thing that annoys me about the Maine outfitters is that they never give any technical details about the various rapids.

  • There are undercuts and other "death traps" on most rivers, can't answer directly for these rivers, but i havn't seen anything or heard anything of serious ones on any of them, if it helps you. Even the local creek here gets some at higher levels that are normally none existant though, so who knows, might depend on the level.

  • Unless you get thrown far under the water you should be okay going down the cribworks. There are a lot of rocks, but you typically just bounce off of them. A few of my friends tried resisting and cut their legs/arms/hands. There are a few undercuts down the river. The water looks so calm but if you swim over to it, you will get pulled under and die without a doubt. There is a another place where you can surf called the bonecrusher. If you fall out and get pulled under you're pretty screwed.

  • Yes, I know BoneCrusher pretty well. I never thought it was deadly though. I've seen many rafts flip there, including my own, and everyone's always been flushed down the river.

  • The Bonecrusher isn't really deadly. I feel out there and a friend fell on top of me, so I was trapped under water for like 35 seconds. Most of the time the bonecrusher jusr spits you out. There is another spot down river that the guides won't even get close to. I can't remember the name of it, but basically the water looks completely still and if you bring your boat over it it will basically pull you under.

  • RE: Are there any undercuts, sieves or other death traps in Cripworks?

It's the "Cribworks Rapid"...undercut on the opposing side of Final Chute, can hold a swimmer. Northern has fished out and CPR'er one boater who survived. Always feet up if you swim. Bad hydraulic river left at Big Ambajackmockamus Fall. It has killed 8 canoeists. You can't see it from above. So it's stay hard right, then bolt immediately left to the chute after the falls drop. And stay left @ Newsoudahounk Falls.

  • that's right rafters better eat it

    Kayakers Rule

  • yeah... you tell 'em. stupid idiot rafters. probably only the river to have a lot of fun. idiots. not like us kayakers. we're there to have... a lot fun too. hmmm... chew on that...

  • what if i like to go commercial rafting and kayak(hard boat) or god forbid take my rubber kayak ducky(little of both worlds)...what group do i fall into then!

  • rafters you can kill a kayaker under dat thing

  • god this video makes me laugh so hard everytime I see it!!! custies getting worked supa dupa

  • 05:20 ftw! :D

  • go fuck yourself mrjetdude...

im a rafter too...nd theres nothing sweet as a fall in the rapids...asshole...

  • i can c how it would b fun its just i dont c y would you want to put 10 people in a bit of ineer tube and thrw them at some pointy rocks when u no ur bound to fall out??

  • this is 20 years of carnage compiled in 5 minutes. dont let this video turn you off to rafting. you have a very slim chance of falling out, especially if you choose the right river. this montage makes it look a lot worse...or better...than the average day.

  • Best rafting trip I have taken was the one I went swimming. Put yourself in a rubber room and wait to die. If you fear living the you are dying.

  • maybe you should try rafting or kayaking before you make judgement. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have whitewater...

  • You all just got trolled by this guy

  • 4.57 the river in control!!!!

  • Its *drop the bombshell* by powerman 5000 :)

  • what's the album name...local record shop said all he saw it on was the "jason vs. freddy" soundtrack and that it was out of print!? i bought another powerman cd anyway! good vid by the way...again!

  • cool song what is it?

  • You'd have to look it up, but sounds like Powerman 5000 and Rage Against the Machine to me.

  • is the guy at 1:59 with "bikini" also the guide of the guardian rock boat wrap?

  • The gentleman with the bikini no, but coincidently the guy pinching him is also the guide of the raft that pins on Guardian; Andy Morrison.

  • nah, I was in Gauley @ 2800 cfs during the Fall flow. You're right about low, Summer flows in Iron Ring being more deadly, in fact this year in August a woman was killed in the rapid.

I've done the Penobscot each time in high water. Only flipped in rip gorge when trying to surf the left side of staircase. Exterminator is an impressive hit but in multiple trips I've never seen an entire raft flip on the rapid. Just seems a bit crazy to me.

  • dude i love your vid, I'm thinking of visitin my wife's family willingly in Maine to trip with you guys...but why did you remove me and the other rivernuts comments about the gauley?

  • I did that there in 1991 when I went to Fryeburg as a Post Gard:)

  • im glad that my raft never fucking flipped when i went

  • yeah that was mostly at exterminator, thats cuz northern calls mandatory hold on at certain spots, exterminator being one of them. hold on = flip... keep paddling!!!!

  • Great video by the way. You rule Party Boy

  • best candle i'v seen at about 1 minute in. its close to a loop. shame the guide is the first one out!

  • haha thats the kind of stuff that happens when you call hold on at Exterminator!!!hahahahahahaha

  • I just got back from a weekend rafting these rapids, so intense. We had an insane spill that was caught on video, I'll remember to throw it up on here when I get it.

  • awesome

  • 4:20 that guy fought his way back up!

  • at least they finally saw their guide in an interesting food entrapment.

  • crazy people doing crazy things.I am also o rafting driver in greec rivers

  • fuck man! i live a hundred yards from the colorado, and i can honestly say that makes cataract canyon look like a dry creek bed!

  • Turkey boats taking the hero route. Gotta love it!

  • daver9...dude i kayak myself but when it comes to crazy rivers like this i'd rather pay a raftguide to keep me alive than kill myself for free on my own! cant wait for gauley season!

  • lol at 44ish you all got owned! amazing vid... just wondering, what do you do if you fall out of a raft on a river like that lol

  • I'm pretty sure I know exactly where that occurs. It's "Bone-Crusher," a sick hydraulic on the Penobscot. I've rafted it twice and been dumped just like that both times. In fact, I've never seen a raft successfully surf it; you're pretty much guaranteed to be thrown out or flipped.

  • I have "succesfully" surfed it everytime, ive never flipped surfing in "bone_crusher"... Ive lost thwarts there though. and lots of custies...

  • that rivers got some monster hydraulics LOL

    thanks for the vid

  • Just did the Penobscot last friday. Never did anything like it before and glad I didn't watch this prior to doing it. We dumped hard on the Nesowadnehunk falls.

  • Nice Hockmeyer cameo

  • been on raft trips like that talk about a rush and a blast wooooohooooooo

  • Damn thats crazy

  • Ever since that crack whore back in '92, I never thought I'd say this again with an actual smile on my face: man, that's a big scary hole.

  • For anyone considering not going on these rivers because of this video...don't worry. I did Penobscot last weekend. Sure it was scary and a great rush put wi did not und up like any of these boats. All day only one guy got tossed into the water. Just listen to your guide and do what he tells you!

  • Mercer you look svelte!

  • Hey whats the name and artist of the first song?

  • I did the Kennebec today at 8000, we dumptrucked going through white washer, let me tell you what that swim was scary.

  • dit it sat 2 and it was still a long float!wish u could take out at carry brook and do big mama and magic again!!

  • what time did you put in? cuz we put in at 10:30 after the release, and the others in the group get out at carry brook and went again for round 2

  • sometime around then,maybe a little later.did u go with a commercial raft company?

  • no i go with my neighbor, they have a camp on that same dirt road, they have a non commercial club 'Moxie Falls Paddling Club' or something

  • haha you go with the rubber ducky people who stradle the outer tubes!?

  • man,i want to try this on my own skin

  • lived in maine for 25 years been on these rivers countless times, however... This video is sick, when i see this i look at the T-grips and think how well the dentist in the forks and millinocket must be doing. These companies need to be sponsered by local dentist

  • what water lever / time of year is that? Im a raft guide and with a couple other guide friends we plan a trip to try some new rivers. this water level seems nice =P

  • 3600+ cfs for Penob, 8000+ for Kenn and 7000+ for Dead

  • we went through magic, class 5 and it wasent that bead, on the kennebeck too.

  • Magic Falls on the Kennebec is Class III, tops, even at high water.

  • i wonder how many ppl die in this river each year... Nice video....

  • i thought the gauly was crazy but this looks even better, my wifes got family in maine, maybe i'll have to pretend like i want to go visit her family now!

  • I just came back from rafting the entire Gauley. No way the Penobscot/Dead/Kennebec hold a candle to "Insignificant" and "Lost Paddle", the latter being the scariest rapid I've ever rafted.

Penobscot's "Exterminator" is a bit below "Iron Ring" IMO. I have no idea what holes they're hitting on these videos to cause so many flips.

  • OUCH-KABIBLES

  • Wow. I wish I could give 6 stars! This is an awesome video with awesome footage. Where the heck is this?
