  • "It's even better when you help"!

    LOL.

  • She was quite a looker back in the day wasn't she.

  • Great acting by Bogart - the reaction after the whistle line has so many things going on.

  • Only 19 in this movie.

  • Well she could "whistle" me all day long.

  • XXX Rated in the most wonderful 1940s kind of way.

  • ahaha harriet in small wonder xD

  • Timelessly sexy in a way that you sadly just don't see anymore. Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears could learn more than a thing or two from studying this clip. It's amazing to think that Lauren Bacall was only 19 when this was filmed - she's exhibiting the kind of grace, poise and confidence that most women don't gain until their mid-30s.

  • shes so beautiful, shes still beautiful to me these days

  • @huykute06 Agree! well said!

  • This is the first I've heard of the whistle being placed in the casket. At his request Bogie was cremated and there wasn't a viewing. According to Bacall's autobiography he didn't want her to remember him that way.

  • Yeah to me Lauren Bacall was the mistress of the double entendre. There's always at least one racy, though sometimes encrypted, reference in her movies to sex.

  • 2 of the most iconic acting legends in the history of the silver screen and a real life, married original Hollywood Power couple who can show Brangelina how it's done! Class, sophistication, earthy sensuality, wit, intelligence, glamour & enough heat to power a flame thrower! What a team, with the most iconic line, helmed by the great Director Howard Hawks, one of my favorite directors!

  • /watch?v=Tm4eoUpfRro

  • I love lauren's voice! =)

  • Most might not agree, but I think she's more beautiful and sexier than Marilyn Monroe.

  • @TheMrsGandy I was thinking that a few minutes ago when watching How To Marry a Millionaire. Marilyn Monroe is sexy in that beach bunny way, but lauren bacall is a true sex siren, with her voice and her femme fetale looks. They are different kinds of sexy but I personally find lauren bacall hotter

  • @TheMrsGandy i am part of the 'most' who do not agree. Lauren is sexy. but Marilyn s outta this world.

  • @TheMrsGandy i think princess grace kelly was the most beautiful ever

  • @TheMrsGandy Words can't describe how much I disagree with that comment. Clicking the dislike button and flagging this as spam will never be enough to express how much I don't agree with that statement. :|

  • Lauren reminds me of another woman Star, Mia Jovavich the resemblence is very close.

  • @zebradun6 Who? Did you mean Milla Jovocich???

  • @TheMrsGandy Actually I meant Milla Jovovich LOL There is one picture of Milla that is the spitting image of Lauren Bacall.

"I get to visualizing Lauren and Milla at the same time and I lose my internal spell check"

  • She is my ultimate icon, this movie is beyond amazing.

  • Classic

  • talk about a romantic scene!

  • I love the way she pauses for a second before saying "blow".

  • Hmm. 7 people don't know how to whistle

  • Bogart looks like "Holy crap, did that just happen??".

  • 1944: Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart.

1959: Eva Marie Saint and Cary Grant.

1967: Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty.

1977: Diane Keaton and Woody Allen.

1981: Kathleen Turner and William Hurt.

1996: Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes.

2011: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

    Maybe Darwin was wrong.

  • @UncleMikeNJ I love your comment.... :)

  • @UncleMikeNJ Clever, but evolution is not a ladder. There is no "better" or "worse".

  • @FM897 Of course there is. It's called "opinion."

  • "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."

  • I've been quoting this for the past few days. The lines work for so many different occasions...you know how to incorporate these lines, don't you? Just have the appropriate situation and just blow.

  • Nice. Classic film moment indeed. Their chemistry is undeniable.

  • OMG, she was so incredibly hot.

  • I have never recovered from the crush I have on Lauren Bacall after this movie. Slim still knocks me out just by walking on camera.

  • 3 words FUCKEN PHENOMENAL CLASS!!

  • The sexual tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Too bad today's movie don't have that kind of spark like the classics.

  • So Lauren left a gold whistle in Bogie's coffin when he died.

    Just in case.

  • @zebradun6 that's so cute and sad ;'( <3

  • So Lauren left a gold whislte in Bogie's coffine when he died.

    Just in case.

  • This is the best banter back and forth ever. Absolute science and the acting is beyond words... nothing like this has ever matched such excellence.

  • Lauren Bacall's first film & she's only 19 years old!! Delivering one of the best lines in a Hollywood script. It's a moment in a picture you wait for. Poor Bogey KNEW he was upstaged at that moment & that's when he fell in love with Lauren. This film also has the great music and performance of Hoagy Carmichael ("Hong Kong Blues" also covered by George Harrison.). The other "moment" is when Lauren sashays away from Hoagy at the end of the film. What a walk. She doesn't even have to speak.

  • She was gorg.

  • One of my all-time favourite on screen pairs. Lauren Bacall was one of the coolest and sexiest ladies of her time. A babe. And bogie...aah...what to say about him? He's the best of all time.

  • Lauren is so sultry. What a babe.

  • this gave me goose bumps! :D

  • No wonder he married her. He was sold at the first kiss.

  • I love you Lauren Bacall.

  • Bogey didn't know what hit him!! Cool as hell this is!!

  • The sexiest scene ever.

  • classiest dame ever class act the two of them

  • This movie is coming on T.V. TCM Tommorow

  • A perfect couple!!

  • There were crappy movies back then and there are good ones today. There is Catherine Deneuve. There are tendencies todat for sure, and lots of bottom line crassness, et al. But no need to go too far. Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, there are good actors ad some subtle yet powerful films.

This is an iconic scene. Admittedly, there are near no classic movies yet in this millennium.

  • @luckyshow very well said. I hate how so many people act like everything back then was glorious and perfect and EVERYthing sucks now. granted a lot does but not all and old movies are certainly not perfect -_-

  • I love lauren bacall! She is only 19 here!

  • Bogie seems like he was the perfect combonation of everything. What a man!

  • I love old movies.

  • When you see theses two on the screen you see Humphrey Bogart and a smoldering sexy woman. You don't realize that he's 45 years old and she's 19. They made this movie in 1944, they got married the next year and stayed married until he died in 1957. If this line was in todays movies they would make it sound to provocative. In the old movies they give you a little and let you use your imagination. Today they give it all to you. No need to use your imagination. It's in your face.

  • God she's beautiful!

  • My Dad named me after her!!!

  • @eLaurenicious, same here!

  • @eLaurenicious My mom named me after her too!!

  • @almea84 USE MORE VOWELS YOU STUPID BITCH

  • @TomLikesGuitar I'd like to buy a vowel.

  • Comment removed

  • anyone seen the fast show piss take of this?

  • wow, Lauren acts & speaks as if she's more dan her age then. ds ws To Have and Have Not, wn she ws only 19 and Bogart ws 45...They married for long until hs death...

  • Hottest scene of 1940s cinema! Reminded me of Gilda.

  • haha my parents also named me Lauren because of her!!!!

  • What a beauty !

  • You know how to whisle J ? You just check out the sparkling one you might have somewhere (if it has not been threw away) , read the directions for use writen on back, blow, and pray your "blues God " to give you the key ...

    Chris

  • how great is this scene! Betty at her finest.

  • Comment removed

  • Classic!!!

  • i can't believe she was 20 here!! such sophistication and epitome of Hollywood beauty!! i'm 19 and i look like a kid haha

  • @ApoloExpress XDD Same! I wish I looked like her. I want to be that classy.

  • @Shinozka meee tooo ^_^ i couldn't even if i tried my best, ha! it's no wonder the wonderful Bogie fell in love with her. she was WAY mature for her age. Plus, from many Bacall interviews, Bogie was the sweetest and most thoughtful guy :)

  • @ApoloExpress Tell me about it. Compare Marlon Brando at the age of 23 to Zac Efron (who is 23 now). Brando looks like a man whereas Efron looks like a little girl.

  • @omgaw AHAHA!! i completely agree!!

and include the men who didn't look like they aged at all: gene kelly was soooo handsome and he was 30's, 40's, 50's and still so!!*_* paul newman *drop dead gorgeous! cary grant, need i go on? i think it was in part the way they carried themselves, very lighthearted yet professional :)

it was just a totally different time, unfortunately (excluding all the political aspects and rights, etc....) :-P

  • @omgaw Nah, that's insulting little girls. he just looks like the little gay boy who lets his slutty pretend-girlfriend dress him :p

  • She is a LEGEND! im a teenager and i love her! i remember watching "how to marry a millionare" with my sister and her friends..and marylin monroe was in that movie but i was focusing on Lauren because she has such unqiue feautres ,she truly is one of a king! and one of the best actresses Hollywood ever had.

  • @cutie13124 I know! I actually saw another movie and was going to flip the channel but her unique features got me watching! She's so unique and talented and was a great actress.

  • @Shinozka She just didn't look like other actresses of the time. She looks like a girl-next-door/siren type you would see nowadays who's been put in a time machine. When looking at a slide show of sexpots of the 40's she sticks out. All the others have the same hair, eyebrows, lipstick, and expression. She's so gorgeous.

  • @Elfinesmom Yeah she looks like she could come right back like she looked in 2010. That look is right up to date now. She was ahead of her time.

  • She has the sexiest voice.

  • Now THIS is my kind of movie! Long live classic Hollywood!

  • This is one of film's greatest moments. Right there with Eisenstein's pram tumbling down those steps.

  • back when men were 'men' & women were 'ladies'.

  • She is amazing; I had the distinct pleasure and shock of spotting her walking her dog and entering the Dakota in NYC last year...she passed right by me. We locked eyes for an instant (she knew that I had recognized her and gave a slight smile), but there was absolutely no mistaking that signature look!

  • The director made her read poetry all night so her voice would be husky.

Whenever I watch Bacall and compare her to the ridiculous simpering stars of the 40s (eg, that girl who played her sister in "The Big Sleep") I am just so grateful that we have her immortalized on screen.

  • @jamarsano, "the girl who played her sister" was Martha Vickers. She had a tragic life, and not well used by the studios! That was the downfall back then...many of the great actors, or could be, were not used to their potential. Mariam Marsh was not used to her potential & Peter Lorre was so underrated. He could have done so much more than he already did! To name only 2 others aside from Martha.

  • Take your point although Lorre made great films in his nativeGermany.

  • I never said he did...I was talking about the way that he and others were treated in Hollywood. Lorre could have done so much more, just like others.

  • btw, the fact that you think that he did great films in Germany, (& I agree), just proves my point. Hollywood didn't allow Lorre to do nearly as much as he could have. He was not stereo cast nearly as bad as other actors/actresses, however, he could have done much more & others were never really given the chance.

  • How does reading poetry make your voice husky? What do you suggest I read to make my voice mellow/sexy/shrill? Bacall had a naturally low pitched voice which as Shakespeare said "doth become a woman" Not sure which heroine he had in mind - Cordelia?

  • Comment removed

  • @rlneesam i read somewhere somewhere that howard hawks (director/who discovered her) said her voice was to high pitched so she spent a couple of weeks developing it so it was lower pitched ... i'm guessing that's what they meant by 'reading poetry', she probably just read it out loud along with annunciation

  • Hey you're not alone.

I'd have left my boyfriend for her too.

  • Would you have left your girl friend though?

  • That's the point - she's one of only a few women I've ever had a massive girl-crush on!

  • @jamarsano Same! XDD Still do.

  • which film is this from?

  • @greenpointyeraser To Have and Have Not

  • All time classic scene! They named their first born, Steve, after Bogart's character in this movie.

  • She is one of the greatest actresses ever! I love her voice and her talent is just AMAZING. Its a shame actresses like her don't come around anymore.

  • Why don't they make women like that anymore!?

  • I really don't know why they don't make women like that anymore. Can you believe that she was only 19 when this was made??!!!

  • @1234sensei WHAT!?

  • @PANZYUTUBEIS Yes, she was only 19!!

  • D= We're stuck with Hoes like Megan Fox.

  • Ugh! She could take a leaf out of this ladies book, thats for sure!

  • A to the MEN!

  • @FallenShards oh dude i know. seriously she is such a SLUT

  • @FallenShards I understand your sentiment, but that's too harsh on Megan Fox. I think the really great movie roles just aren't there as much. Great writing isn't valued as much nowadays because they can fill it with special effects.

  • @jeffteach Think you have a point there. Hollywood makes movies for 14 year olds with the attention spans of gnats now--great writing doesn't apply.

  • @jeffteach He said nothing about her acting. He just pointed out that she dresses and acts like a ho, which she does.

  • @FallenShards, Oh my God, when I read your comment I laughed so hard! I know, it's such a shame, isn't it?

  • @FallenShards and Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, Vanessa hudgens... gah, the list goes on. you poor men :(

  • @LiloPelakai Actually, I'm female =P

  • @FallenShards I think there was just as much sex and drugs behind screen then, than there is now. Women and men are just more open about it now.

  • @FallenShards Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • @FallenShards lol amen 2 that

  • @FallenShards epic win of a comment.

  • ive been told that i sound like lauren bacall, now thats one hell of a compliment!

  • " You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything, not a thing... or may be just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you Steeve? You just put your lips together and blow" ...

  • I love that line! If only I could pull it off...

  • Bogart had to sit for this kiss, if he stood it would show he was Humphrey!

  • i love her!!! she is the best...

  • juuustt whistle

Love "to have or have not"

  • best response ever.

  • There is something about Miss Bacall!...=)

  • Classic scene. In a way, scenes like this are sexier than two people having sex on screen.

  • So true.

Sex filled scenes are such a turnoff when it comes to romance movies. Scenes like this leave more mystery and make them look more dignified than the tramps you see on the screen today.

  • I wouldn't say sex scenes are a complete turn off; it can be well done and still be sexy when its brief and subliminal, and does not dwell on. Its only when it looks porn-y and explicit does it seem off turning.

  • @FM897 Yes, but in another way, two people having sex on screen is sexier =)

  • @7beers True. A sex scene can be insanely hot if it's done well, but most of them aren't.

  • @FM897 Actually, I was just goofing. I actually don't find porn very sexy, so I do agree with you.

  • @7beers LOL I wasn't talking about porn, I was just talking about sex scenes in regular movies. There is NOTHING that I find sexy about porn......not that I would know about porn or anything remotely like that......................................................O.o

  • @FM897

    i like sex scenes jerk.

  • @Thetruthishere11 So do I. What's your point?

  • @FM897

    ha

  • @FM897 Exactly! Mystery is sexy.

  • @SupernaturalLover67 Yep. Your imagination can fill in the details ;)

  • @FM897 :)

  • Correction: In those days, that line wasn't just risky it was risqué.

  • Absolutely. Lauren Bacall has class. In those days, that line was considered risky. The the titled of that movie was, To Have and Have Not (1944), and Lauren Bacall was only 19-years old when she said that line to Humphrey Bogart. Lauren played Marie "Slim" Browning and Humphrey Bogie Bogart played, Harry "Steve" Morgan. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart were married from 1945-1957. I think that "Bogie" was the love of Lauren's life.

  • double entendre

  • I miss movies like this.

  • They both were amazing actors, very talented... Bogart and Bacall, what a lovely couple!

In this film, I cant believe she was only 20.

  • wow, i never knew it was this entertaining to watch Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart in this movie! what a scene, very interesting, just great

  • Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart two wonderful actors.

    Thank you for sharing.

    See you soon,

  • I think Humphrey just jizzed in his pants.

    I don't blame him.

  • I have to pick my jaw up off the floor now...

  • She got me, I'm completely mesmerized with that line and pose of her, total natural seduction and unique style, Go Lauren!

  • i think generally laureen is stunning, there's something very special and unique about her beauty and attitude... she's mesmerizing in a way. laureen and bogart, both wonderful, quite a couple in real life too.

and lord what a scene... the kiss, her voice, her attitude... whistle... put your lips together and.. blow!

    classic!

  • I think old time movie stars are so hot

  • It's called "class". The stars today utterly lack it.

  • I agree!

  • OMG HER VOICE.

This is an amazing woman. She's amazing even today. Outspoken, and lovely even for someone who is well into their 80s.

  • I can honestly say that never, by blowing through closed lips, have I ever been able to produce anything remotely resembling a whistling sound.

If anything it produces a farting sound.

  • haha, thats a nice 1

  • Comment removed

  • Lauren Bacall, the all time most gorgeous woman on earth!

    :D

  • Oh wow, her voice, those eyes...That was incredibly sexy.

  • Lauren Bacall I love you

  • Pweeeh-Pweh! :)

  • that was sensual mmm

what kinde of boring and stupid world do we live in todsay

these ware the golden years of conema

  • 'its even better when you help'

    ha ha ha

  • Ugh! Why can't we have actors and actresses like this anymore? Take me to the 1940s!
