Timelessly sexy in a way that you sadly just don't see anymore. Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears could learn more than a thing or two from studying this clip. It's amazing to think that Lauren Bacall was only 19 when this was filmed - she's exhibiting the kind of grace, poise and confidence that most women don't gain until their mid-30s.
This is the first I've heard of the whistle being placed in the casket. At his request Bogie was cremated and there wasn't a viewing. According to Bacall's autobiography he didn't want her to remember him that way.
Yeah to me Lauren Bacall was the mistress of the double entendre. There's always at least one racy, though sometimes encrypted, reference in her movies to sex.
2 of the most iconic acting legends in the history of the silver screen and a real life, married original Hollywood Power couple who can show Brangelina how it's done! Class, sophistication, earthy sensuality, wit, intelligence, glamour & enough heat to power a flame thrower! What a team, with the most iconic line, helmed by the great Director Howard Hawks, one of my favorite directors!
@TheMrsGandy I was thinking that a few minutes ago when watching How To Marry a Millionaire. Marilyn Monroe is sexy in that beach bunny way, but lauren bacall is a true sex siren, with her voice and her femme fetale looks. They are different kinds of sexy but I personally find lauren bacall hotter
@TheMrsGandy Words can't describe how much I disagree with that comment. Clicking the dislike button and flagging this as spam will never be enough to express how much I don't agree with that statement. :|
I've been quoting this for the past few days. The lines work for so many different occasions...you know how to incorporate these lines, don't you? Just have the appropriate situation and just blow.
Lauren Bacall's first film & she's only 19 years old!! Delivering one of the best lines in a Hollywood script. It's a moment in a picture you wait for. Poor Bogey KNEW he was upstaged at that moment & that's when he fell in love with Lauren. This film also has the great music and performance of Hoagy Carmichael ("Hong Kong Blues" also covered by George Harrison.). The other "moment" is when Lauren sashays away from Hoagy at the end of the film. What a walk. She doesn't even have to speak.
One of my all-time favourite on screen pairs. Lauren Bacall was one of the coolest and sexiest ladies of her time. A babe. And bogie...aah...what to say about him? He's the best of all time.
There were crappy movies back then and there are good ones today. There is Catherine Deneuve. There are tendencies todat for sure, and lots of bottom line crassness, et al. But no need to go too far. Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, there are good actors ad some subtle yet powerful films.
This is an iconic scene. Admittedly, there are near no classic movies yet in this millennium.
@luckyshow very well said. I hate how so many people act like everything back then was glorious and perfect and EVERYthing sucks now. granted a lot does but not all and old movies are certainly not perfect -_-
When you see theses two on the screen you see Humphrey Bogart and a smoldering sexy woman. You don't realize that he's 45 years old and she's 19. They made this movie in 1944, they got married the next year and stayed married until he died in 1957. If this line was in todays movies they would make it sound to provocative. In the old movies they give you a little and let you use your imagination. Today they give it all to you. No need to use your imagination. It's in your face.

We locked eyes for an instant (she knew that I had recognized her and gave a slight smile), but there was absolutely no mistaking that signature look!
The director made her read poetry all night so her voice would be husky.
Whenever I watch Bacall and compare her to the ridiculous simpering stars of the 40s (eg, that girl who played her sister in "The Big Sleep") I am just so grateful that we have her immortalized on screen.
@jamarsano, "the girl who played her sister" was Martha Vickers. She had a tragic life, and not well used by the studios! That was the downfall back then...many of the great actors, or could be, were not used to their potential. Mariam Marsh was not used to her potential & Peter Lorre was so underrated. He could have done so much more than he already did! To name only 2 others aside from Martha.
btw, the fact that you think that he did great films in Germany, (& I agree), just proves my point. Hollywood didn't allow Lorre to do nearly as much as he could have. He was not stereo cast nearly as bad as other actors/actresses, however, he could have done much more & others were never really given the chance.
How does reading poetry make your voice husky? What do you suggest I read to make my voice mellow/sexy/shrill? Bacall had a naturally low pitched voice which as Shakespeare said "doth become a woman" Not sure which heroine he had in mind - Cordelia?
@rlneesam i read somewhere somewhere that howard hawks (director/who discovered her) said her voice was to high pitched so she spent a couple of weeks developing it so it was lower pitched ... i'm guessing that's what they meant by 'reading poetry', she probably just read it out loud along with annunciation
@FallenShards I understand your sentiment, but that's too harsh on Megan Fox. I think the really great movie roles just aren't there as much. Great writing isn't valued as much nowadays because they can fill it with special effects.

Absolutely. Lauren Bacall has class. In those days, that line was considered risky. The the titled of that movie was, To Have and Have Not (1944), and Lauren Bacall was only 19-years old when she said that line to Humphrey Bogart. Lauren played Marie "Slim" Browning and Humphrey Bogie Bogart played, Harry "Steve" Morgan. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart were married from 1945-1957. I think that "Bogie" was the love of Lauren's life.
i think generally laureen is stunning, there's something very special and unique about her beauty and attitude... she's mesmerizing in a way. laureen and bogart, both wonderful, quite a couple in real life too.
and lord what a scene... the kiss, her voice, her attitude... whistle... put your lips together and.. blow!
"It's even better when you help"!

Correction: In those days, that line wasn't just risky it was risqué.
AlexisAlways1 2 years ago 10

They both were amazing actors, very talented... Bogart and Bacall, what a lovely couple!

tdiddy0027 2 years ago 8
It's called "class". The stars today utterly lack it.

OMG HER VOICE.
This is an amazing woman. She's amazing even today. Outspoken, and lovely even for someone who is well into their 80s.

I can honestly say that never, by blowing through closed lips, have I ever been able to produce anything remotely resembling a whistling sound.
If anything it produces a farting sound.
