Metal is music which is elaborated, where there is a prominency of distorted guitars, heavy bass lines, a high level of competence of the band members, lyrics which often talk about war, personality traits, drugs, and "deeper" stuff than Pop etc.

Pop music is "light" music, easy melodies, easy listening (for the whole world population, not just metalheads), often repetitive, no or little presence of instrumental parts, not very difficult or elaborated.

@jinglebearr Metal is not evil, obscure, not mainstream music. That might be the philosophy of some metalheads, but it's not what defines the "Metal" genre. Metal is music which is elaborated, where there is a prominency of distorted guitars, heavy bass lines, a high level of competence of the band members, lyrics which often talk about war, personality traits, drugs, and "deeper" stuff than Pop etc.
The term "mainstream" itself is idiotic, "mainstream" doesn't mean "bad quality".
