  • Man what a cool, down to earth guy. Nothing Hollywood about him.

  • This guy is the man. Not a hint of pretentiousness for someone as talented as he is. I think that is the major difference between a self taught film-maker like PTA and some of the self important highly educated film folk.

  • i'm just really happy to see people comparing P.T Anderson to Kubrick. feels good, man.

  • I like the "There might be blood" line. Actually when i saw this there were a few people that walked out of the theater. Losers.

  • He has to be one of least egotistical directors I have ever seen.

  • Thanks for posting this... you rock!

  • PTA and Kubrick are only alike in the fact that they both strive and succeed in making great cinema

  • @kenm31388 That is false.

  • 1:00 I love paul's reaction to those type questions. he's always just like "you're overanalyzing my movie, i just wanna tell a great story"

  • @ilikecheese1011 Eh, maybe...but you know, he's trying to answer the questions as best as possible. I don't think he's being cynical. he doesn't do a lot of recorded/edited interviews, mainly just Charlie Rose. He's a very sincere guy and I love his films & hey, you can't overanalyze the movie, it wasn't even made yet.

  • I've always thought that PT's films are more deeply felt than Kubrick's.

  • There Will Be Blood is rightfully compared to Kubrick, it reminds me of the movies like "The Shining", the first half of the movie is just hypnotizing and builds tone and climaxes with madness in the second half. He really does remind me of Stanley Kubrick, hell, he even looks like a young Stanley Kubrick.

  • @Ichiboy900 I think you're clutching at straws really. But if you see him as a new Kubrick, then who am I to say he's not? Personally I don't think there's much likeness between them, except perhaps that they're both just as artistically successful as commercially, which is a hard feat. PTA is much more invested in the actors as people (unlike Kubrick), he doesn't make particular genre-pieces like Sci-fi or horror (unlike Kubrick) and he doesn't do 100 takes for everything (unlike Kubrick)

  • @hampusheh Obviously he has a different directing style, but the comparison really comes from the fact of how original that particular style is over other modern directors, it's that originality that reminds me of Kubrick. And even though he does have a distinctive style, he still manages to make a very different film every time, like Kubrick.

  • @DonRMB: I know!! However I fear one thing...it might not be as good as TWBB. That movie is a masterpiece (Also in my top 3), and it'll be really hard to surpass it.

  • He's filming "The Master" right now!!!!! Man I can not wait...

  • Great insight: "If we can just focus on the small things [the story of the relationship between Daniel Plainview and HW], the big things [the story of oil] might accidentally end up taking care of themselves."

  • Fuck what everyone is commenting- I'm just going to say it; PTA is better than Kubrick. Both as a filmmaker, writer, and person. He may not be as good as Scorsese yet, but give it time. He's still young.

  • how come on every single PTA video i mean literally every single one someone has to compare him to kubrick, i almost feel as much as your complimenting PTA your also dragging kubrick's name through the mud, PTA's a great director but i feel like he shines as a writer and almost copies scorsese's use of angles and moving cameras almost hyjacking him rather than emulating him, i feel his original in terms of story but in regards to the actual films hes not doing anything innovative like kubrick

  • @drstranglove79

that's because kubrick has done everything, no other filmmakers will do something "new innovative" anymore (thats what p.t. said btw).

he is the new kubrick in my eyes, he said he made his masterpiece with magnolia, but then there will be blood came along

  • thsi guy never gives interviews and this is oen of them?

  • I remember when There Will Be Blood first came out and everyone was drawing political conclusions from it. If you actually watch the film, none of that is there.

  • One of my personal heroes. People like him makes art go on.

  • hard eight was his 1st movie, i think. one movie i've never seen, but heard john c. reilly stars in it.

  • @angusbonscott yes its very good its on netflix you you have access to it

  • P T Anderson is God, he is the modern Kubrick. I love how his advice is just not give a shit about anything. Fucking Brilliant.

  • "Just don't give a fuck"

    best advice

  • for people calling him the new Kubrick... i don't understand. Maybe if you only look at 'there will be blood', you can see some Kubrickian elements such as the stark far camera shots of the environment around the character as well as visual progression substituting spoken word. I don't see any connection in his other films, though. It feels almost as if his others are all closely related in directorial and thematic style, but 'there will be blood' is something much unlike his past works

  • @thatwaskindofrude I actually think along with There will be blood, Punch Drunk Love has a lot of Kubrickian elements with the quirky characters, weird camera angles, dark humor, surrealistic imagery. However, even if you don't see similarities I think people are just comparing their uniqueness and brilliance when they discuss the two.

  • @badskroy71 interesting. perhaps I owe punch-drunk love a rewatch. Thanks for the inspiration

  • i find it very queer that people keep calling this guy arrogant, he's very personable!

  • after first watching the "pizza interview", he comes across as arrogant in this one, realizes it in the last 30 seconds, and tries to apologize by saying "i love this show" when earlier he demonstrated a clear disdain by telling Rollins: "I don't know HOW you drew those conNECtions!" for a film he hadn't even begun shooting! forget 'bout it.

  • @Vaipan im pretty sure the comment about 'drew those connections' was sarcasm on Anderson's part.

  • definately one of the best potential in Hollywood right now. He has released a string of solid movies (i.e. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) but he hasn't made a great film yet, but i have high hopes

  • @getlikemc

that's not giving it them much credit just calling them 'good'.

i bet you haven't even seen PDL...

  • @gangstalee713 Uh yea i have bud. I've seen every single one of his films, most twice. Sorry if i wasn't clear when I called his films good, they're certainly more than that. After thinking about it, I can say that 'There Will Be Blood' is a great movie, most thanks goes to Mr. Daniel Day Lewis for that. As far as Punch Drunk Love goes, I thought it was a comedy before I saw it (it was a Sandler movie, of course,) but it was really a very serious drama, which through me off a bit.

  • PTA seems to be the foremost technician in hollywood these days. his sense of aesthetic is classic and spralling. he is certainly a formalist's wet dream.

  • what a liar

  • PTA is easily one of the best directors to ever live. How he works is so great, and his films are so masterful its unbelievable. He defiantly draws from Kubrick (one of my all time favorites) and I can see him being ranked along side him in a couple of years.

  • Hahah, PT Anderson makes Rollins look like an idiot here lol. Notice how Rollins immediately attempts to politicize the film, meanwhile PT is like "Ummm, No. Sorry, HR, its not about George W Bush."

  • An idiotic semi-literate manchild interviewing a modern cinematic genius. Thank you, ifc.

  • @PerversionsOfNature Well aren't you precious?

  • @eqopa Ha ha, agreed! He sounds like a film critic...Sorry, I should say Perversions is a.."...pious pedagogic primate, proliferating pedantic prose in pursuance of praise and prostration from primitive presences whom he percieves as profoundly plebeian and proletarian in perspicacity when paralleled to his personal profusion of percipience."

  • @discoverydavid P.S. Please persons pinpoint or precise 'Pendrickie..Polish-Pirate" pastoral...What the phuck?

  • @PerversionsOfNature i agree...he sounds like a moron

  • I love the interviewer's reaction when PTA mentions Penderecki. I agree with 'godfatherofwiseguys' that no one could quite anticipate just exactly what was coming their way with 'There Will Be Blood'. It truly is a unique film - the best of the decade, in my opinion. Also, 'godfatherofthewiseguys' has one of the best user names I've yet seen...

  • Having trouble hearing what film he says he saw.. Anyone know? Treasure something..

  • I'm pretty sure he says Treasure of Sierra the Madre.

  • Treasure of Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. Great classic!

  • @MarlonJonsson

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

  • 1. There Will Be Blood

    2. Boogie Nights

    3. Magnolia

    4. Punch-Drunk Love

    5. Hard Eight

  • @brickbusterful coffee and cigarettes...

  • @carcillian im listing his movies, not half hour shorts, but yes, i have seen that

  • Magnolia, such a beautiful moive.

  • WHAT A GREAT INTERVIEW!!! LOVE THIS!

  • i think no one, even the interviewer, saw what was comming. Before, his films was sort of an ensemble Robert Altman type of films. but with There Will Be Blood, not only did he depart from his usual style of films, his starting to form a Kubrick like route. even in Punch-Drunk Love, little hints of Kubrick is there. Now with There Will Be Blood, he cements his legacy in Cinema forever.

  • its so sad that Robert Altman died a few months after this interview :(

Also I am really happy that PTA dedicated there will be blood in his memory :)

  • PTA's seating position reminds me of an old Crowley photo.

  • I really hope he doesn't wait another five years until his next film.

Then again, if the end result is anywhere near as good as Blood, it'll be worth the wait

  • i wish there were more pta interviews online, i could just spend all day listening to the dude talk

  • lol PTA is just like dude im just trying to make a story about character, not preach on the rise of capitalism in industrial america.

  • It's a pretty uneducated argument I guess. It's petty and silly, who cares?

  • What is better? How can one director be better than the other? Do you mean the method by which they express their ideas? Or the mastery of their craft? Or their abilities as a story-teller? How can anyone compare two artists?

  • Before I get attacked by all you other fellow movie nerds, let me rethink some of the things I typed. I stand by what I say about Eyes Wide Shut. Punch-Drunk Love is better than the second half of Full Metal Jacket, the first half is great. At the very least we can agree that Kubrik and PT are two of the all time greats.

  • No, P.T. Anderson hasn't done anything of 2001 Space Odyssey caliber yet. And he hasn't done anything to totally shake the foundation like Clockwork Orange or Dr. Strangelove.

Give him more time and we'll see but I don't think he's comparable yet. He's a legend but he's not mythical quite yet.

  • I dunno. I think some people dismiss modern filmmakers because they're exactly that, modern. I guess in 25 years PTA can be appreciated as much as Kubrick is now. In fairness well anything ever be on an even keel with with 2001? lol

  • I agree. PTA is very, very good but he is also pretty derivative of a lot of other directors. Which isn't a negative in and of itself, but Kubrick made brilliant films that were also true originals. To be honest, the only modern American director I would call a genius on the level of Kubrick is Aronofsky. PTA may well be there someday though.

  • i can tell he is one of the greatest directors of all time just by watching his movies up till now. of course he gonna make a lot more great movies in order to match the accomplishments of other great directors, but i can tell already.

  • @TheSZimmer i think he did. Before, in the 2nd half of the 90s plus the early 2000s, he's sort of the "One of the best". but with There Will Be Blood, which is getting better in time, he now stands at the top of cinema.

  • It's better than Full Metal Jacket?? There's no comparison because they're nothing alike. Not the same genre, same message, or anything.

  • PTA is better than Fincher - fact !

Boogie Nights is better than Fight Club - fact!

  • Fight Club- better moral

  • are you saying that fighting in secret underground clubs is better than making cheesy porn films ???

  • No, i'm not. Fight Club- not just about fighting in secret underground clubs. Boogie Nights- Not cheesy porn film, grow up man, and maybe sop watching the television with your ass.

  • okay....... what ?

  • Don't worry, the last bit wans't nessecary but yeah...

  • ugh fanboy, where did you pull those facts? out of your ass?

  • what facts ?

  • that's what i thought

  • your telling me you prefer fight club?

  • @dan564891 totally agree with you.

  • This guy is a fucking legend, probably the new Kubrick, did you see the interview where he is eating pizza?

  • Could you give a link to that interview? You have me intrigued. ha.

  • "Get your pizza, man!"

  • @detriplea where is the pizza interview???

  • @hellyeahfucker

it is titled: Paul Thomas Anderson Interview - Part 1 of 3 , and he eats the pizza from 2:52,

    Enjoy

  • @detriplea That might very well true, considering the rate of how often he makes a film. Like Kubrick, he takes his time.

  • @detriplea Kubrick was an innovator. This guy is a plagiarist.

  • @detriplea I don't get why people compare PTA to Kubrick... They're nothing alike. PTA is much more like Robert Altman imo. But I get what you're trying to say

  • @detriplea his films without a doubt contain intelligence, creativity, heart, and huge amounts of ambition. Though I think he has yet to create his masterpiece. Though I do like the way he takes time to craft his films. All of them feel very polished and fulfilled in terms of vision.

  • @detriplea No! Where is it? (Thanks!)

  • what was the music he was referring to?

  • I must reiterate. PTA is THE premiere auteur of our times. To be so vibrant and encapsulating visually and also such a natural writer (never self-imposes style like Tarantino.) I see him as somewhere between Kubrick and Altman.

  • Yea -- WHEN IS HIS NEXT MOVIE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • PTA is so vastly talented. to have both immense directing and writing skill is rare.

  • Not to mention that amazing performance he drew out of Daniel Day-Lewis!! DDL's a great actor but I believe PTA had a lot to do w/getting that character just right.

  • Couldnt have put it better myself...

  • @FunBoy15 Totally agree about PTA but i was thinking to my self if those two are connected somehow... I mean you know, a good director should have a writing skill.

  • Jonny Greenwood ended up doing a wonderful job on the soundtrack, and his work sounded like it was HEAVILY influenced by Penderecki

  • Liked it so much, I bought it! It's moody, mysterious, scary... just amazing.

  • PT is brilliant. But I think Terrence Malick is closer to Kubrick. Watch out for The Tree Of Life.

  • i will never be able to take Henry Rollins seriously. the way he talks with such specific diction is hilarious sometimes, like when he says "what is it about her music that speaks to you in a cinematic sense?" i had to laugh.

  • I know exactly what you mean.

  • p.t. anderson and always will be the best. he's definately the next Kubrick.

  • Yea, he definately is the next Kubrick, he takes so long to begin his next project!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

  • I love PT but kubrick he is not kubrick would have never made punch drunk love

  • Haha I've never seen punch drunk love but it looks quirky -- did he write it?

  • Wrote and Directed...........I will say one good thing about it he got a performance out of Adam Sandler that no one else ever could

  • Are you sure?

    Kubrick made whatever interested him.

Punch drunk love takes a long time to soak in.

  • Ok so maybe Eyes wide shut was kubrick punch drunk love

  • If anyone has the one where he interviews kevin smith can you post it please.

  • Two American icons of intellectuaslism on screen. PTA is a THE genius of contemporary film for me. His films are so distinct and vibrant. Anyone know where I can find his first one?

  • Err... Amazon

  • The last question Henry Rollins asked PTA made me smile. To hear one of your favorite directors say, "just don't give a fuck" as a word of advice in creating film- that's badass.

  • He is a very talented filmmaker who could easily rise to become one the best directors of his generation. Hollywood, keep your eyes peeled.

  • He already is.

  • @Guigley He's already there. His last four films have been outstanding.

  • @Guigley could become? he already is.

  • Henry Rollins is a great American. Smart, intelligent and thoughtful. He's not full of baloney like so many other musicians.

  • You know what I appreciate about this interview? THe fact that there is not pretentiousness.

I always fear watching interviews with intellects because of the phoniness, and this interview had neither.

Such a relief. I really admire PTA. What a great director.

I have never seen a more generous director who gives his actors free reign.

He is great. I always look forward to his movies.

  • "Don't give a fuck" - damn right...

  • PTA says "Yeah!" so funny at 0:04.

  • haha! i found that funny too!!

  • They mispronounced Penderecki.

  • how do you pronounce it?

  • Like Wayne Gretzky. Penderetzki. Because it's Polish, in the Polish language "ck" is pronounced "tzk" or "tsk."

  • What a pleasent interview to watch. Much respect for PT Anderson.

  • Much respect for PT and Henry!

  • Henry!!! How could i forget Henry?!

  • I like his comment around 8:40. That's true no matter what industry you're trying to get into. It's hard to start anything with confidence, especially when more experienced folks question you. Nice to hear his perspective on it. Sometimes it's simply a difference of opinion. :)

  • at this point he hadn't thought about using Jonny Greenwood. Glad he did.

  • It's amazing how these liberal assholes think every move is a critique about corparate America.

  • agree this film is a character study not political it shows how greed and power corrupts

  • greed and power hasn't corrupted government...hmm

  • Look, it doesn't take a whole lot of thinking to turn a movie or a book into a political allegory these days. It's become the cheap interpretation (quite frankly, too cheap in the case of TWBB).

And as subjective as art is, I still think it's kind of a slap in PTA's face to pull that shit out of the movie when he's explicitly said there's no ulteriority to it.

Rocker86 had it right, it's a study of an individual. I walked out of the theatre thinking about myself, not the government.

  • I agree, it's so obnoxious that with every statement someone makes it's led to either malevolent capitalists or the decline of the environment.

  • Two great guys. Love them both! Paul T Anderson is the best!

  • Aqui está el futuro del cine

  • This must have been filmed not long before Altman's death... Damn shame.

  • Amazing director, cigarettes & coffee, sydney (hard eight), boogie nights, magnolia, punch-drunk love, there will be blood... I think punch-drunk is one of his best with magnolia and there will..., please discuss this. With gondry, fincher, aronofsky, ritchie, glazer and ferrara, his one of the very best of the young directors of today.. sheers. Hope he does movies more often, even do I understand his way of work, maybe is his system.

  • Such a talent! There Will Be Blood is so amazing. Sucks that No Country for Old Men came out the same year, otherwise Blood would sweep.

  • No Country is pretty damn good, IMO.

  • i meant as opposed to....wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • i like TWBB better then no country but thats just me!

  • I like Blood better than No Country myself. I just think No Country is the favorite and that's fine cause its a hell of a movie, but it sucks for Blood.

  • then you should support the movie you really think is the best as supposed to going with the flow.....wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • I'm not, i'm openly rooting for There Will Be Blood to win Best Actor, Director and Best Picture along with a few others. I just think the favorite among hollywood and voters is No Country for Old Men.

  • I dont care what the oscars or any other pretentious award shows think. Both films were great, but I think TWBB had more character to it, and I found it more interesting. Im also a HUUUUGE PT fan. Coens are good, Lebowski and Fargo are classics. But for me personally I love PT and especially this film. Black Flag is good too.

  • Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best young directors today. The performances he pulls out of actors is huge. Many actors are looking to work with him. Just look at his movies that he as directed. Boogy Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love and there will be Blood.

  • hahahaha pt just laughs at henry when he tries to make a political connection. i can see where hes comin from but pt's movie have always transcended that realm.

  • wow it's amazing to see two people having the sillest argument ever about a movie ...it just goes to tell you that people have empty lives they try to fill with arguments and disagreements.

  • PTA, PTA, PTA, PTA, PTA!

  • PTA is hands down one of the most original and talented and underrated directors of the past decade. Excellent writer

  • HAHAHA...God I love the internet.

  • You are such a turd.

  • I feel bad for this guy...fnch...Find some beauty of life. PT is a great director...

  • yawn

  • I'm not trying ti entertain you fnchstphr....ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!!!

  • How soon will you be threatening to drink my milkshake?

  • Wow man...That was a good part. Why are you so angry at me mate. I was just making light of your cynicism...I probably shouldn't of. Suppose I'm sorry then.
