I think the reason the test audience didn't like this alternate ending is that they could not come to grips with the fact that Will Smith would be viewed as a bad guy. He is the monster. You spent the whole move thinking that he was the great, brave, person working for the survival of the human race. PLUS, I personally think that Will Smith is such a lovable, likable, person that him playing an evil person is upsetting to see

The movie is loosely based on the novel and although it's very entertaining, it completely misses the mark on portraying the infected. In the actual story Robert Neville becomes a "legend" for very, very different reasons.

Some backstory:

This is how the movie was originally supposed to end. It was meant to show that the creatures are sentient, and capable of feeling emotions, organizing groups, setting traps etc., which was the entire point of the original book.

However, the test audience didn't like the original idea, so they went with an alternate ending in which the guy blows himself up, ruining the entire story. The creatures are now mindless savages for general story.

THIS is how the movie should end.

Supposedly, the book this is based on has this as the actual ending (replacing zombies with vampires, of course). The grenade suicide ending was just put in because it would be more appealing to people I guess if the movie ended in him killing himself. I guess both are good endings, but it's better to have this one than the other.

the zombies show that they are not completely mindless beasts, but are also capable of reason and compassion. they have been seeing dr. neville as the evil "legend" for so long. he has been the boogeyman that has been kidnapping their friends to do god knows what. the point that dr. neville realizes this is when he looks at the board of his failed experiments and all the "zombies" he has killed as a result of it.

He works on a cure by capturing the zombie like creatures and testing on them. But in this world, it is the zombies that are normal. they are what the world is now. it is dr. neville that is strange one. He is the "Legend" "Monster" "Myth" "Boogeyman". he abducts them and does weird experiments on them. he finally realizes this in the end
