Quite a scene, huh! Based on the story titiled,I think, Bad Day at Honda. Brought to life remarkably by Hollywood. Man, man, oh man!!!! Would that more folks saw this modern day western, now a forgotten classic.
Pre-dates Frank Sinatra's turn at karate in "Manchurain Candidate" by a few years. Another Hollywood celebrity who did martial arts, prior to Bruce Lee, was James Cagney. Thanks for posting.
I was actually searching YouTube to see if this scene wasn't up already. But it is and in fine quality. I watched the movie for the first time last night and couldn't believe what a badass Spencer Tracy was owning a whole town with one arm. In this movie he does it physically. In Inherit the Wind he does it mentally.
This is one of my father's favorite Spencer Tracy scenes. He didn't remember the name of the movie, but when I heard it described on TCM, I had to watch it. Now it's one of my favorite Spencer Tracy films. I've used it to help teach slang and phrasal verbs to my ESL students. Grammar doesn't always have to be boring! RIP, Spence. Borgnine was great in this, too.

Notice how excellent the camerawork is. there is a vast depth in the frames because of the excellent composition. also, almost half the scene is done in one continous take, building up tension.
one of my favourite scenes from any film ever. im 22 and enjoy films made 50, 60 years ago and made on smaller budgets. id rather watch spencer tracy in this than any other film now. 'Paths of Glory' 'the Caine Mutiny' absolute classics.
Probably the first (or certainly 1 of the first) scenes to use some form of Asian martial arts fight choreography in American cinema. Nice work, Spencer.
In high school I had problems with new kids only younger, not older than me. I minded my own business until the punks started to bother me. They were too stupid to mind their own business and I busted them up good. The other older assholes told me not to try messing with them but they were scared of me and since I was no bad ass I spent four years in peace. (most of the assholesw are DEAD or in prison. Too bad. Jagoffs are jagoffs. Bye. PS They were not afra
A classic scene from a classic movie. In a perfect world, all bullies would be dealt with accordingly, but...... And to the previous poster : the word is epically, not epicly.
when someone is in your face like that, you have the right to hit him. it is an assault, and you don't know if he will try to kill you in the next moment.
a blow to the trachea, the windpipe, could easily be fatal. there are several very lethal attacks that will easily cripple the intruder for life. self-defense isn't pretty.
but, of course, if you do handle the bully this way, our society being what it is, you will likely be in big trouble. be sure to have video to back you up.
As Hollywood goes, the possibility of a gray hair old man kicking the bully's ass probably took the audience totally by surprise. You just don't expect this outcome. When I first saw this scene at the theatre my jaw dropped! What!!! It just made this me think, not to screw around with folks. I think it save me a few less bloody noses while growing up.
Spencer Tracy turned this movie down twice...then finally agreed to do it when they told him that they offered the part to ALAN LADD. LADD was certainly no TRACY...but in this particular movie (only 80 minutes)...I think ALAN LADD might have been more believable in this Fight Scene with BORGNINE than SPENCER TRACY was. Nevertheless...still a memorable scene.
Borgine is a big solid guy and a WW2 Navy veteran. However that is Hollywood and he does'nt look so hot with his fat ass smacked flat on that cafe floor. Being taken out by a one arm old timer Spencer Tracy still is a possibility. Some old guys can still give a good account of themslves, treat your other people fairly and try not to cross anyone.
If you want 'tough' try Emporer of the north with Lee marvin, and ernest borgnine.

@sabinoson my understanding it may be the first major picture to feature a martial arts based fight scene, not sure though.

@MrByaeger nope, i am wrong " Blood on the Sun" was in 1945, Cagney used martial arts in the fight scene

For the Movie -Spencer showed some moves - for what he had been through in WW2 This was nothing .

@1Bandit455
Spencer Tracy didn't serve in WW2. Too old (born 1900) and he was an alcoholic.

In real life an untrained person would have broken his arm or wrist in that last throw. Judo/Jiu-Jitsu is the real deal.
