The anode that must be replaced when it dissolves is not there for the "plating out of minerals" but for the stopping of electrolytic corrosion, the cause of rust-through.

I would highly recommend NOT using a crescent wrench on nylon or brass fittings

Use the right size wrench this way you won't deform the fittings as their soft and become rounded after time .

Could have drained off the water pressure by the T&P over pressure valve before removing the drain plug.

What about the bypass valves? What about if your fresh water tank has antifreeze in it?

What about disconnecting the electric if it is an electrical water heater so you don't burn the element up, or risk shocking yourself.
