  • nah! obama sounds like him.

  • I find it super difficult to control the stick with my left hand if I use traditional. When I make a stroke the stick rebounds in a random direction and not only that - it seems that my wrist just can't follow the motion of the stroke as if it's defective or something like that :/

  • I saw this couple of years ago, and now I really dominate that grip, and use it when necessary, because sometimes for some grooves the match grip still a good choice.

For me: Traditional grip = Riping off the rudiments

  • Jojo Meyer explains way better.

  • for building up muscle strength there is a very good exercise of jojo meyer's. the clapping exercise. very simple, very easy, very effective. there are a few videos on here demonstrating it. 8-)

  • I am 34, been playing since I was 11. I still have so far to go!!!

But with a teacher like Weckl Obama I am taking my first steps.

  • "I call it the cradle position because its.. uh.. uh.. cradling the stick."

  • what works for wekle doesn't work for everyone

  • Anyone know how to increase the speed of rotation of your left hand? Mine is still slower than the right hand.

  • @ICR68 When you get up to speed, you should use the thumb to do the strokes.. :)

  • @frederik0101 Thank you very much for the advice. I will give it a go.

  • @ICR68 It's all about practise :)

If u practise a lot, during speed building exercises you will become faster. You should think about the rotation, like if it was the wrist.

  • @frederik0101 As I understand it, a lot of the action comes from the fingers as well. Actually, your point about practice is very true: my speed is now definitely picking up. The problem has been that I have played with the matched grip all my drumming life, and as I am just trying out the traditional grip, I am using muscles not previously needed. Thanks for your help. :D

  • What pad is he using :) He makes me want to practice traditional more than i do and i do a lot as is!

  • @kentsmedblom it's an HQ RealFeel pad. the company has re-designed it a few times since this vid was originally made though. they don't look like that anymore. that's an oldschool one.

  • u guys are so gay w/ the political pop culture. don't you sheep know its a publicity technique?

stop watching the news, they are molding your mind.

  • @jonnyboulanger amen

  • obama sucks dave weckl for president!

  • Imagine Osama doing paradiddles on the Whitehouse podium! Maybe someone ought to suggest it to him!

  • Thats too funny, I am watching these videos and my wife across the room says "Is that Obama" ,Yeah, Dave here has a little higher pitched voice.

  • lol wow sounds just like him, lol

  • I think im gona try and wank with the traditional grip now.

  • @MoistMilk i've always used traditional, it works better

  • the part where he continues to bounce the stick with the thumb in the left hand always looks like magic to me

  • Comment removed

  • any body can be awsome on the drums just keep playing and dont give up

  • dave you'r awesome!!!!!!don't you think the same way guys?

  • You sound like Obama. You could possibly make some money from that ability to sound like him...just saying

  • That's hilarious! Close your eyes and try it! Ha!

  • I think you guys need to tune up your ears... Does not sound like Obama at all, Obama`s voice is much lower + every single one have their own talent...

  • Holy shit! He does sound like Obama.

Or maybe a better disc. would be. He sounds like he's doing an Obama impression.

  • True but if you listen closely he has a very compareble accent and colour. But its indeed higher.

  • calm urself

  • Dude, obama sounds like him, not the other way around...

  • You're right, he does sound like osama. He makes the bin laden family proud.

  • I just noticed that too lol!

  • @BrianCharlesLee maybe its obama that sounds like him...

  • @yadrummer11

    Boo... 0/10

  • @BrianCharlesLee I think Obama can make money by imitating Weckl...

  • hes a good teacher, but hes no tom brown :P

  • wohwo finally i can do a fast singel stroke roll with traditional grip.. THANK YOU DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i went to one of his clinics....he said when he was young and unnoticed he used to practice 12-14 hours a day. Sure he doesn't mind giving out his tricks because there are VERY few people that even practice half that much and they will never reach the level hes at.

  • its not only a matter of practice...its a matter of tallant too

  • its also not quantity but the quality of the practice session u use. if u practise the same thing you know already over and over again you will just improve on what you know only but u wont have new ideas everyday

  • This guy is out of this world, never have i seen a drummer with his chops and finesse.

  • thanks Dave for your tips, it's helpful!

  • This is gonna be so helpful!

  • damn this was good vid, finally made me realize the technique of trad grip

  • not only is weckl a badass...he's a great teacher!

  • LOL, my teachers was right. You need geometry in real life.

  • thanks for sharing this kind of videos very helpful to everyone.

  • Weckl is, quite probably, the BEST drum educator I've ever seen (and I'm includind here Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Dom Famularo and Jim Kilpatrick...). He is sooo patient and clear in his explanation. Really a treasure. I've learned more from him during the years than from anybody else. Awesome.

  • Once you dominate beounce in all its forms and details, you'll become a great player - most certainly. Rebounce for a great press roll, double strokes, single stroke control, the more you dominate it with less effort, the more you can get more speed with less effort. I repeat: the rebound is DEFINITELY the key point. Nothing else. Work on that you have it all (or almost).

  • Greats like Dave Weckle are seldom selfish. They share their knowledge and admire and respect others with talent too. Thanks Dave. This guys is the Einstein of drums.

  • You're right, it's very common for veterans, in any discipline, to keep those trick for themselves. Thanks Dave.

  • 4:26 is soo funny it makes me chuckle evry time.

  • your BODY and your wrist

  • Yeah. You BAAHHDYY and your wrist. HAHA

  • 2001 I think.

  • 6:32 best part

  • What love of his instrument, technique, grace, and class.

Dave Weckl is a national treasure and role model for people. He shines!

    Simply beautiful!

  • thank you so muchhhh for this video, it has helped my traditional grip tremendously!!!

  • go fuck yourselves I m learnin a lot from this musician

  • I know why Dave Weckl uses traditional grip:

When he was young, he was able to play everything with right hand, he played everywhere, even in the streets, and people put money in his left hand. Thats why he uses traditional grip :DD LOL

  • Dave's got the best style of teaching i've ever seen........

  • obviously, im mexican

  • worlds best drummer

  • have you heard of antonio sanchez?

  • dave weckl's videos are the most helpful ones for any drummer

  • so this was just for advertising for virth sticks!!! BRILLIANT.
