I find it super difficult to control the stick with my left hand if I use traditional. When I make a stroke the stick rebounds in a random direction and not only that - it seems that my wrist just can't follow the motion of the stroke as if it's defective or something like that :/
I saw this couple of years ago, and now I really dominate that grip, and use it when necessary, because sometimes for some grooves the match grip still a good choice.
For me: Traditional grip = Riping off the rudiments
for building up muscle strength there is a very good exercise of jojo meyer's. the clapping exercise. very simple, very easy, very effective. there are a few videos on here demonstrating it. 8-)
@frederik0101 As I understand it, a lot of the action comes from the fingers as well. Actually, your point about practice is very true: my speed is now definitely picking up. The problem has been that I have played with the matched grip all my drumming life, and as I am just trying out the traditional grip, I am using muscles not previously needed. Thanks for your help. :D
@kentsmedblom it's an HQ RealFeel pad. the company has re-designed it a few times since this vid was originally made though. they don't look like that anymore. that's an oldschool one.

I think you guys need to tune up your ears... Does not sound like Obama at all, Obama`s voice is much lower + every single one have their own talent...
i went to one of his clinics....he said when he was young and unnoticed he used to practice 12-14 hours a day. Sure he doesn't mind giving out his tricks because there are VERY few people that even practice half that much and they will never reach the level hes at.
its also not quantity but the quality of the practice session u use. if u practise the same thing you know already over and over again you will just improve on what you know only but u wont have new ideas everyday
Weckl is, quite probably, the BEST drum educator I've ever seen (and I'm includind here Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Dom Famularo and Jim Kilpatrick...). He is sooo patient and clear in his explanation. Really a treasure. I've learned more from him during the years than from anybody else. Awesome.
Once you dominate beounce in all its forms and details, you'll become a great player - most certainly. Rebounce for a great press roll, double strokes, single stroke control, the more you dominate it with less effort, the more you can get more speed with less effort. I repeat: the rebound is DEFINITELY the key point. Nothing else. Work on that you have it all (or almost).
Greats like Dave Weckle are seldom selfish. They share their knowledge and admire and respect others with talent too. Thanks Dave. This guys is the Einstein of drums.
When he was young, he was able to play everything with right hand, he played everywhere, even in the streets, and people put money in his left hand. Thats why he uses traditional grip :DD LOL
nah! obama sounds like him.

Anyone know how to increase the speed of rotation of your left hand? Mine is still slower than the right hand.
ICR68 1 year ago
@ICR68 When you get up to speed, you should use the thumb to do the strokes.. :)
frederik0101 11 months ago
@frederik0101 Thank you very much for the advice. I will give it a go.
ICR68 10 months ago
@ICR68 It's all about practise :)
If u practise a lot, during speed building exercises you will become faster. You should think about the rotation, like if it was the wrist.
