Ah! Malice Aforethought-I know it well. I read the book. Men like Dr. Bickleigh marry overbearing women like his wife for the money and then he has the nerve to murder her. Men will never learn. Murder is a tricky business!
BRILLIANT!! My comments echo yesman1062 exactly! In fact I think it was the first ever programme I saw on my new TV when I moved into my first place... I think it was an early evening repeat on BBC2... I have often cast my mind back to those happy and optimistic days - as was the sentiment in early 1930s!
Thank you for responding to me. Gosh, I can't believe I got the actress wrong, oh well. I will try to find the book. Thank you for all of you movie, show uploads, I enjoy them all.
I believe this is based on the same story by Frances Ilses--Malice Aforethought as the Alfred Hitchcock movie, Suspicion, with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. This is an excellent adaptation. Thank you for posting. The BBC Dramas are excellent.
@505Wizard Hi there! the two stories were indeed written by the same author, Frances Iles. It was one of the pen names for Anthony Berkeley Cox. It's not the same story though. "Suspicion" was based on the novel "Before the Fact" which was written the year after "Malice Aforethought". By the way, Suspicion was called "Before the Fact" because in the novel the Cary Grant character was actually guilty! It was Joan Fontaine, by the way, not Ingrid Bergman. A really good movie, messed up at the end.
Classic series, the BBC did a great job with the casting, so often the case with their dramas of this period. The 2005 re-make was very inferior to this version. Well done with part 3, my copy does not include the original soundtrack.
Thanks for this. I saw it when first broadcast in 1979: I was 13 and watched the first episode reluctantly with the 'rents but ended up really enjoying it and made sure I saw it all. I never forgot it and would ask friends etc if they saw it too (no-one seemed to..). It was quite a shock to see H.B. turn up as Shelley just a few months after this btw.
3 years ago I came across the paperback of the book it was based upon but never thought I'd get to see this original again.
@yesman1062 Thank you ~ comments like yours make my day. You are the reason that I post old stuff... you saw it years ago and cannot find it now. I've been there too! :o)
@steffsstuff There were many great one liners in this as there were in so many Masterpiece Theatre/Mystery series. I've been hoping this particular one would come out on DVD; The new Malice Aforethought was kind of disappointing.
@59cdv LOL! That was one of my favorite lines, too. He really had a big ol' grin on his face, thinking he was getting over ~ which they quickly removed for him. :o)
Thank you so so much for uploading this gem. I've been searching for this for years. Please don't worry about the quality, it's so great to see it once again!
@stmarymead58 Hello, Dear! Sorry your comment escaped my attention for so long. You are very welcome for the post! It sounds like you are also one of the kind people who saw it years ago. Thanks for the comment ~ and sorry for the delay in responding. :o)
@DrMontague I was hoping that viewers would feel that way! I know that's the way I would feel if I had not had access to it. Thanks for the comment.:o)
@Chariots1981 I really love getting comments like yours. The picture quality is so poor I questioned whether or not I should post it. I am so glad that I did, so that nice people like you can see it again.

From the days when every new drama series on British TV was set in the 1920s and 1930s.
