I have heard this about water most of my life. I had water :)
What I do wonder is if you couldnt find fresh water or have a filter,, if food such as fruit and vegetation would have enough juice/liquid to survive without water for quite some time?
@RedSmoky Usually with some exception, in an area where there would be enough fruit to sustain you there would also be plenty of water to drink as well. Fruit trees require a lot of water to produce the fruit. The exception is a coconut. You can have lots of coconut trees that bear fruit in an area, which also require a lot of water but it may not be where you can get to it.
Great video and explanation. It's repetitive, but repeating is the mother of well set knowledge.
Speaking about period of time man can live without something, it may change. It pretty much depends on persons physical conditions. Let's say Bob is a big man, well fed before, and now he's stuck in the desert, without food, of course he can last for maybe even 4 weeks, with no or very little food, but Jake who's skinny, will need to find some nutritions much earlier. Just an example.
We said in the video hey are not set in stone, they are averages, to get a person to prioritize what they need to do when they are in a survival situation.
@tekknorat One survival instructor calls his stomach the survival muscle, that would be Ron Hood. Also keep in mind in order to turn your body stores into energy it requires energy, so some food to produce that energy is a good thing...
Repetition is good, even from hearing it from multiple instructors as each presents the point in different ways which helps send it home to the memory banks.
Ron is a good man and he knows his stuff. You are correct on the body producing energy however the rule of threes is designed to get persons to prioritize in a less than desirable situation. The point of making food the last priority is to get them moving on what is going to save their life when they find themselves in a bad way. You can not burn any energy if you are dead from exposure.
In regards to shelter, I've been in a few discussions on which has a higher priority... fire or cover. I think it really depends on weather, clothing and other factors. In some situations a fire would be my concern, such as warming up hands that are cold in order to make a shelter, but that could be counterproductive if its in a downpour. I'd like to hear your take on how to determine precedence.
Cover can be shelter, if it keeps the weather off. As i said in the video it may be a shirt or a jacket depending on conditions. Fire can also be a form of shelter per say as and example I have built a fire and put it between myself and some logs or a big rock, kept me warm conditions did not dictate cover just warmth. In heavy rain I have found shelter under a tree where a small fire did the trick until the rain stoped and I could build bigger. You do what you have to until you can do more.

@shilohtv agreed, priorities need to be realized.

You missed the last rule of three. Three months without HOPE!
draconiandevil01 1 year ago
I did not miss it a person who take the time to prepare has hope, and the will to survive. People who have no hope will not last a week

Great video Steve. Taking care of the basics goes a long way to staying safe and getting more out of the outdoors.
