People need to wrap their heads around the fact that these guys aren't saying God intervened and helped them win, but rather their faith in God forms the character that allows them to "never say die" and the physical ability to do what they do. No, God rarely, if ever, influences the outcome of a sporting event, but He does have an influence in how these guys live their lives.
As a Christian, this is not about God at all. Look, God gave this guy what he gave him but we have to do whatever we do ourselves. As far as sports, a shot didn't go in, a birdie didn't sink, a kick didn't go through the uprights, a ball didn't sneak past the third baseman down the line, none of that stuff happened because God pointed his finger & said "Here you go, because you believed." Bad stuff happens to Christians in sports too. Making this about God is the wrong way to look @ it.
If you actually listen to Frank Reich's words ... the message is simple. He takes the focus off himself and gives God the glory for giving him the strength to overcome tremendous odds. Personally, I find great inspiration in Frank's testimony. The fact that years later we are commenting on a post game interview is evidence that God can use football or whatever means he chooses to give witness to the power of Christ in a person's life.
Writing as a Christian, a sportsman myself, and a great admirer of American Football, I have to say that I do not think Reich's hyperspiritualisation of this game is at al appropriate. Reich will go down in NFL history, perhaps jointly with Gary Kubiak, as the finest professional career backup quarterback of all time, and no doubt God lent him strength that day to do his job, as He does to us all to do our secular jobs. But the implication that God was somehow "on their side" that day is absurd.
