I welded with my TIG for about 3 hours straight, practicing, trying to learn it. I was wearing a welding jacket and some welding Gloves. The problem is that I didn't button the cuff. The absolute horrible burn the resulted caused agonizing pain for about 3 weeks and took about that long to start peeling off. It was just crazy terrible, about 10 inches down my arm. I still have a scar ! I will never ever never forget to button my cuff again and never try sleeveless. Cover up that SKIN !

Welding with protection has nothing to do with "growing a pair" or "being a man". Those of you that want to weld sleevless, go ahead, but don't get mad at people who are trying to lend advice about being safe. Welding rays cause skin cancer, it's as simple as that. If being a tough guy means you're not scared of cancer, then so be it. Go speak with a dermatologist and see how many welders he/she has treated.
I have some serious, permanent damage on my arms and knees from welding in shorts and a t-shirt. I was burned so bad, just from one hour of welding (my FIRST hour of welding to be exact), that my skin bubbled and peeled for a week. It 's been 3 years now and the skin on these spots is still rough and bumpy. I had no idea I was even burning myself at the time. The next day I woke up in excruciating pain and couldn't even figure out what had happened!
here in the midwest Im lucky enough to have lots of cool weather to weld in (stick mig tig)in the summer I use long gloves that I cant take of and put on quickly but my problem in the summer is neck burn. take my advise and do what ever it takes to protect yourself!
Not all tungsten is radioactive, only the Thoriated Tungsten which contains 2% Thorium Oxide (Thoria). Even so, Thoriated Tungsten only emits Alpha radiation, which is stopped by a few inches of air, and by materials as thin as paper. Aside from ingesting/inhaling the material, alpha emitters are harmless.
The UV radiation from welding is FAR more dangerous then the alpha radiation from the thoriated tig rods.
IDIOTS! cancer sometimes doesnt show up for 20 years. you idiots keep welding away with those horrible uv rays hitting ya. do you guys even know that depending on what tungsten youre using, it can be radio active?
all tungsten is radioactive and mabe you should stop insulting the people that actually work for their money. oh yeah and thanks to thoes idiots you have a road to drive on and a car to drive and a house to live in, think about it man.
i agree with you 100% that people need to be more carful when welding, but it affects diffrent people in diffrent ways. example i worked on a horse trailer for about a week 8 hrs a day with short sleeve all the time and i dint get arc burn the only thig i got was a nasty drip burn thanks to my buddy.
idiots eh, without welders the world would be a very different place shit head so maybe you should think twice before you criticize someone else's job
what in the world today isnt cancerous? stop being such a bitch about it. think twice next time you go to eat a chicken nugget. i weld for a living, 6 days a week and by the end of the 6th night i cant see myself glowing at night
i tig with a short sleave shirt every fucking day. grow a pair. try living in the desert as an off road welder, then youmay change your tune. so what if you get burnt... oh no. i burn myself through my gloves all the time. you dont get flash burn with tig like you do with mig for whatever reason.
@ 1:23, you fused the tungsten electrode into the puddle. Sure, you jimmied the annealed electrode off of the workpiece but my sympathy is with the poor bastard that has to dress and polish that bastard weld...
Chrystalized Tungsten doesn't polish very well, try to stay out of the puddle... Do you know Bob Vila?
In time, with practice, you could make better welds if you learned to hold the tourch in either hand. It looked as though you had to jimmy your arm all around to get some of the joints. It did sound like you were getin-r-done.
You shouldn't weld like that.... all the ultra violet light is going to your arms which could cause you cancer.... and also a risk of getting a shock too.
I would not reccomend anyone welding with sleaves up.... Just look at the distance between his skin and the actual weld metal.... It's only a few millimeters appart. I have never welding with short sleaved shirt or t-shirt.

MIG and TIG I believe have different frequencies and for whatever reason TIG will burn you but not as bad as MIG, especially MC6 wire.
