Because I love this bike so much I will, over the next few weeks, be pulling down every single part and either polishing, porting, upgrading or reconditioning it..
I want her to be a brand new ATK406 and a fine example of the breed. Work has already begun so stay tuned for some nerdy enginering vids real soon.
I have a 95 ARK406 and regularly embarrass my new KTM riding friends on it. I also own several new huskys (great bikes) but int he woods the 406 is really quite competent. See "Motosportz" for some 406 vids
mines a 90 with the nickel-plated frame. my whole familys got em. wen we go out thers 3 atks in one trailer... mines bone stock except sprockets, 15 drive and 45 rear.. we clocked mine at 80 cuz im the lightest in the family being 130 pounds
Tell your dad hes smokeing crack. I started rideing in the late 70s. The bikes back then were not as powerful the suspension sucked and the brakes were drum not even close to the disk they have now days. Once they came out with the 2 strokes in the mid to late 80s with power valves the disk brakes front and rear late 80s and the upside down forks late 80s early 90 after that they are competitive with todays stuff
@danthill007 no ive seen 70s bikes compete and ruin todays bikes. And an 80s dirt bike and a modern dirt bike of the same CC would compete with each other, even the drum brake models.
depends on what your doing with them. Straight line drag race maybe they could compete. But on a motocross track there not even close on suspension and the stuff that matters. Rode plenty of 70s bikes and not one of them would hang with my 96 atk 406 on the track or my 03 rm 250. But they did back then have some motors with a little work was very powerful and comparable to the power of todays bikes
Rear disk right by the tranny was an atk thing. The brake was right there and the chain actually slowed down the rear tire instead of the disk being directly to the rim. That was late 80s early 90 not sure exactly what years. My atk is a 96 the last year the made the 406 and the disk on mine if bolted to the rim
well with stock sprockets i would say she goes about 140-150kmph. pretty standard for dirt bike. I have never had a speedo on it ,but once we clocked it next to a car going 100, just to get a measure, she still had plenty.
Hey, nice bike ya got there. I happen to have a 93' model. Since it's my first bike, anything you suggest about makin sure it works the way it should?
